Have been listening to this album for over 30 years ...... still as fresh as the first time ... beautiful songs .......... cheers Pete .... RIP Ronnie.
The 70s. Better than the sixties for music in my opinion. I remember when Rough Mix came out when I was 16 but kind of ignored it because I was too immature to appreciate it. I do now.
I bought this album when released and have to say it was one of those really different type of albums like an Alvin Lee and Mylon Lefebvre one off album. This record is great from start to finish I especially like 'Annie' and 'No Where to Run'-great songs.
So soon before Keith passed on, and had already lost most of his panache, Henry Spinetti shines on this tune. Excellently produced. rewards loud volume, which is to how to ultimately judge records of that milieu. "O Jack are you ever you ever coming back" are lyrics that leave me still in ambiguous clouds but nonetheless evoke admiration for their uncomromising declaration of whatever dire possibility they suggest.
I listened to this rough mix vinyl album with my brother so much I wore it out. Oh, I love it so. Transcendent piece of work & musical collaboration. Thanks Pete and Ronnie!
The music on this album is so tight. PT and RL got so many music legends to play on this album , it's just phenomenal. The don Williams song "til the rivers all run dry" is the best version of this song I've ever heard.
@DrBuggles1 I was 17 when this came out, and it quickly became an all-time favorite. It still is. I wore out my cassette copy years ago, but when the CD became available, I snapped it up right away. Glad to see there's much Rough Mix love on RUclips
A lovely song from a beautiful album. I believe P T. did it to Help R.L. out who was on his uppers at the time. For me the album never got the acclaim it should of, maybe because the cover was so dowdy maybe it wasn't pushed hard enough, maybe it suffered from the same thing a lot of P.T stuff suffered from.....notwhoitis. Anyway for me and many others it's a gem and "Street in the City" is a bloody masterpiece of imagery/imaginary song writing.
and so did i my man,,,,I love pete as much as i love Michael whom I grew up a mere 10 miles from! I honour pete evrey bit as much as i do Michael,,I just hope Pete dont die any time soon!
I've always been a Who fan and , of course, know all their songs and albums. But it wasn't until recently that i discovered this album. Just great song after another (specially the first 6 or 7). I would say the quality is right there with the Who's best. Although this is not really a Who album (sort of mellowed down). Highly recommended!
Never heard of this until today 10/2/2019. Wow this is a good song. I would have played throughout the last 30 years if I knew about it. Sounds like a Who song which is a plus. Thanks to my friend Matt for leading me here
Pete Townshend's tribute to Ronnie Lane of the Small Faces. Ronnie came down with a debilitating medical condition and took all of the proceed's of this album to pay Ronnie's medical bills.
Hello, Johnscottcree. Pete was an old friend and supporter of both the Small Faces (later to become the Faces). They were close enough to where the Who (by preference of Pete) brought in Ronnie Lane's fellow bandmate (from the Small Faces) Kenny Jones. I don't know anything about the guru....but they were old pals. And they meshed together so well !
I have to wonder how this song would have sounded with Keith Moon on drums. It might be my imagination, but it sounds like Pete is still writing for the Who on this one.
Since I first heard some songs from this album, I started to imagine what the Who would be like if they brought in Ronnie as a second guitarist/vocalist, as well as secondary songwriter. No offense to the rest of the Who, but they weren't very good songwriters, and by the late 70s, John Entwistle's spark as a writer of black humour was dried out. The Who is still my favorite band.
78intheshade is correct. Marriottt and Lane were as good. You need to listen to the words and listen to the melody . What happened to The Small Faces was that Don Arden would not take them to America . Had they thing's would have turned out much differently.
Have been listening to this album for over 30 years ...... still as fresh as the first time ... beautiful songs .......... cheers Pete .... RIP Ronnie.
me too !!!!
Has to be one of the MOST under played, unknown music from two of the most talented song writers ,players during the best time in MUSIC ever!!
The 70s. Better than the sixties for music in my opinion. I remember when Rough Mix came out when I was 16 but kind of ignored it because I was too immature to appreciate it. I do now.
Agreed
ME too since I was 12years old proper who fan I'm now 52 just don't get bored love them to bits John Bonnie Higgins Scouser
I still cry when I hear "April Fool"... Clapton on the dobro magnificent... One of the top three albums I have ever heard... Ronnie Lane lives on!
Just a jewel of an album.
"I guess the Lord's wearing glasses now' ...my fav. album of all time
That's a little bit of magic right there.
lol, I've had to replace both the old vinyl AND the CD at least twice. One of my all time favorite albums
It still sounds as fresh to me, now, as it did back then when it first came out. That says a lot about the quality of the music! :)
This popped up and my mood is 10,000% better now!
what an album and what a fucking brilliant song
I have the LP, the cassette, and finally in 1991 I got the cd Love it asmuch noe as I did over 20 years ago
Magnificent. This is the song that turned me on to solo Pete.
This is an underrated Townshend Classic
"The water's getting closer, better ring up the grocer".....LOVE IT!!!
Such a great song and album, too. I bought it the day it came out. It always takes me back everytime I listen to it.
I can remember the release of this album like it was yesterday. It is just as beautiful to me now as it was then. So many great memories.
I heard this cut on WEBN FM in Cincinnati , ran out and bought the album that day. This music was and is a bright spot.
this is definitely one of my favourite albums of all time ,and this song is just so beautiful and magical, and I've learnt how to play it ,
What a beautiful song.
Can't believe 11 people don't like it. Listened to this album for the first time in 1979. Still great
I bought this album when released and have to say it was one of those really different type of albums like an Alvin Lee and Mylon Lefebvre one off album.
This record is great from start to finish I especially like 'Annie' and 'No Where to Run'-great songs.
My oldest brother bought it as soon as it was released without knowing what was on it. He of course loved it instantly, so did I.
Happy Birthday Pete...To me Townshend is the GOAT
They say that the trick is to walk in backwards like you're walking out, I guess the Lord's wearing glasses now :D

Genious.

Pete magic, Ronnie magicer, together absolute MAGIC,,, Brilliant stuff, this should be in everyones collection, Must go to listen again.
I had rough mix about a million years ago, but remember a different album cover. Brilliant, emotional song by the way.

arthur sleep couldn't agree more
Well said. Also, maybe it was simply too good - this is music that requires one to really listen to it, not just have it play in the background.
Timeless tune from Townsend!
One of my favorite albums of all time!!
Great album
Love the lyrics ! What great imagery.
one of my favorite pete songs. love it! mmmmm memories from when i was 16.. remember i was born 87! he is my hero!
I often wish I was around when thtis was released, but at least I can be one of my generation to love ronnie lane and townshend!

The album is great.
Pete Townshend's tribute to Ronnie Lane of the Small Faces. Ronnie came down with a debilitating medical condition and took all of the proceed's of this album to pay Ronnie's medical bills.
Pete paid some of Ronnie's bills . Rod Stewart paid a lot of Ronnie's bills.
Just great - love the who, but love the obscure little numbers Pete Townshend does.
Great stuff!
The Nice 🎸💖🎵💔🎸Wonderful! !
i have it and i was born in 1969 great album
Loved this song straight away after my very first listening ...
( I'd love to make some quotes on the lyrics ... but I'd only make a fool of myself )
oh my you took me back decades with this upload, Richard sends thank you very much
When your favorite Who song is not a Who song 😉.
Smashing album!
deadly tune
I think that Pete and Ronnie shared the same spiritual guru, Meher Baba at the time, hence the connection

Come on where do I start with this absolutely brilliant j p Higgins Scouser+
Ronnie Lane never wrote a poor song, on his own or with anyone else. I can't think of anyone else I can say that about.........
I have to wonder how this song would have sounded with Keith Moon on drums. It might be my imagination, but it sounds like Pete is still writing for the Who on this one.
I think my dad has this on Vinyl:')
and yes i agree
seconded
🎸🎶😚👍💓
@rockinroller7 Princeton 73' you got it !

Emagine of Pete did more albums with other Artist

This is a live version. from what?
This is a live version. from where and when? I doubt Ronnie Lane was on this.
Ronnie Lane and Steve Marriott were as good as Lennon/McCartney at song writing in my opinion
