There is a Zen Buddhist saying that goes something like this, "An artist must stop just short of going far enough so that the work can have life". The problem often is that one can not determine what far enough is, until one has gone to far.. Thanks for haring your work and your banter.
Thanks. I haven’t had such a piece in a long time! Maybe it was just the head space I was in. Couldn’t make a sound decision if my life depended on it! 😂
Maybe this is why some flippers paint the top or body? But you hang in there and brought it back to the original look of walnut. It turned out great too!
Oh boy have I had a “go wrong” piece. I purchased an antique dresser with mirror, solid oak with carved accents and a marble top. It had an old wood musty smell. I cleaned it with murphies oil soap and put it in my not very damp basement until I had time to work on it. The finish was in good shape, so I just touched it up with marker pens. When I can back to it 6 months later, it was covered in mold. I pulled it outside, scrubbed it with a cleaner for mold and left it in the sun. Smelled better, so I sprayed the non- finished areas with shellac. But scrubbing the mold had damaged the finish and it was flaking off. I assumed it was probably shellac, so I tried a quick scraping and mineral spirits. Nope! Then I tried lacquer thinner. Even bigger nope. I finally used paint stripper. Underneath I found beautiful wood with a marked contrast between the oak and walnut trim that had been camouflaged by tinted lacquer and a coat or two of polyurethane. Ended up sanding it to bare wood, staining it, and applying many coats of shellac. It took about 8x longer than I planned, but it was so worth it in the end!
After all is said and done, those pieces are usually the ones we remember the most! While in the middle of it we just want to walk away but after the dust settles and the furniture is back to its original state (or even better) ...like you said, the struggle is worth it! 😵💫
When placing veneer you need to place small strips of wood on the top first before placing the veneer on top and gradually pulling out the strips of wood as you place the veneer on the top it saves you a lot of headaches. Good luck next time. Iron on veneer is easier. Prayers 🙏 and Love 🤟 From Oklahoma
@@gingerdunn6590 I have seen people do the dowel trick. I will have to try it. The wax paper worked ok. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any reasonably priced iron on veneer! Believe me I would have bought it! 🤣 Thanks for the suggestions!

I did use toner on the top only. And it did take care of all the discolouration but it was the wavy sides that I couldn't wrap my head around. So in the end that was my reason for the re-veneering. I am just glad that it's done! 🤣

I noticed that when you sprayed the stripper on the top, it seemed to bead up a bit. Made me wonder if there was contamination like wax or furniture polish on it which prevented the stripper from wetting the surface completely. You didn’t mention cleaning before you started stripping. I have never used Stripwell so I’m just wondering. I enjoy your videos so keep up the good work. 😁
@@thomasbagwell4510 Thanks for the kind words. I wiped the cabinet down before stripper. But usually a good stripper just eats through everything! So I am still not sure about Stripwell. I will give it another go in a future project! 🙂

With contact cement, you should use slats of wood between the veneer and the base. Then, remove one at a time while sticking down the veneer.
