  • In this video we take the AnyTone AT-779UV HAM Radio on a camping trip to test it out in the great outdoors. With only a 20W radio and a unity gain mag mount antenna we were able to communicate with repeaters over 100 miles away and make local simplex contacts.

I have one in my F150. Great little radio for a lot of reasons. You can also open it up to to do FRS, GMRS, FRS, and Ham bands all at the same time. Just hold the VFO button when turning it on.

I think here in Canada they freeze our bank accounts now if we transmit more than 2W on GMRS 😂 How long have you had your AnyTone 779? I am curious how they hold up over time. I went to order another one from Amazon but they are sold out. Not too sure about ordering from AliExpress.

@@caddisguy It has floated around between the trunk of my car, the front seat, the seat of my truck and the space behind the seats for about a year and a half. On again off again usage. I just got it installed on the dash of my truck a few weeks ago. So far it is holding up.

It sure is a great little radio. I hope you'll like it just as much as we do. I liked it enough I bought a second one so I can keep one in the house and the other in the Jeep. Glad you enjoyed the video. We filmed another video a few weeks back comparing the Nagoya TB-320A and NMO-72 antennas with this AnyTone UV779. I will post that up sometime in the next few weeks if you're interested.

@@caddisguy Sure, I'm looking forward to more. I started getting into radio when I was 19, but life happens, Now at 74 I have been a ham for 4 years and just decided to get a GMRS capable rig. This will work for me since it does both. ✋73's🎙KD9OAM🎧📻📡

Still loving the radio. I have been running 3 of them for a while now. One for the Jeep, one for the main base and another for the home office. It's a very capable little radio. Tested the DTMF tones for IRLP / autopatch recently and that works too. Also bought a portable Yagi antenna for it. Using it to bounce signals off the ISS.

What does the FUN button do!?

It does the "Fun" things, more specifically the "Function" things. Squelch, Skip, Scan, Reverse, Power, etc. I like that they abbreviated it to Fun though 🤠👍

I was pretty sure it was a TRAM 1185 in that video but looking it it I am second guessing myself if it was a Bingfu. Either way, the TRAM 1185 is the better out of the two. I did another video comparing the Nagoya NMO-72 and Nagoya TB-320A. The best out of all these (as far as reach is concerned) was the Nagoya TB-320A but it is a larger antenna (I wouldn't want to drive around on the highway or in the bush with it) The Nagoya NMO-72 is a really good antenna though. Similar size to the TRAM 1185 and Bingfu but works better. The mag mount for it is larger and sold separately. The NMO-72 is the one I use now when I'm mobile in the Jeep. Hope this helps!

@caddisguy thanks for the detailed info. Last night I won one of these radio on a giveaway from my local gmrs emergency group. I need a good antenna for it and I saw your video. Thanks sir. Merry Christmas and wish you best for the next year.

@@MrRoman-lo6ih you're welcome and Merry Christmas to you as well! Congrats on the radio. Speaking of emergency groups, I have used this radio on some of our local emergency simplex testing nets. At 18-20W, it does quite well. Over 50km without line of sight. I also have a portable yagi antenna (the split boom Arrow II antenna) and with that, I can do the same (well over 50km) on low power on the AnyTone and even a hand held set to low power (1W) ... just figured I would mention it in case this would be useful for your emergency group. We will do a video on the Arrow II sometime. It's a great antenna. I have been using it a lot on my balcony and when we're out camping, mounted to a tripod.
