LG V40 tends to have better dynamic range the the first 3 photos. We can notice that there is more detail in the shadows compared to G8. Also the V40 tends to be a little "warmer" compared to the G8. In a classic LG fashion they both tend to have oversaturation....we can notice that in the picture of the flower at 5:41. The next picture I think might have had an issue with LG V40 because it seems titled. For some odd reason, the G8 seems to have better dynamic range in that picture. There is more detail in the staircase on the bottom left corner. On the photo at 6:02, I feel that the G8 has a little more detail. That is noticeable when you look at the bottom left shrub's leaves and even the mulch. I don't know if it was an autofocus issue but G8 seems to capture a little more detail.This can also been seen in the city hall picture where the bricks at the bottom, the city hall sign and the oval dome thingy at the top have more detail than the picture captured by V40.
I've noticed that both phones tend to have different white balance in regular lens vs the wide angle lens. I don't know why but the images in the wide angle tend to be a little colder than regular lens images.
The front camera of the G8 captures more detail. Notice the tree in the background. In the G8 we can see more detail in the leaves compared to the V40 picture.
I mean.....the G8 seems marginally better. But overall, considering that the V40 can be found so cheap on eBay....I don't think the G8 would be an "upgrade" in terms of cost to performance.

Thanks for doing this comparison. You're channel is great! I like the audio from the G8 as the mic sounds clearer on the G8, but for still shots & video I like the V40.

Myself hated the sound from the G8. G8 sounded horrible when talking to sharp and loud, and i fear it would not preform good when you are out on partys or concert where you want good sound. But i guess you can tweak the sound to be less loud like i can do on my V30? Picture and movie not big different, but a little favor the V40 for the front camera. Selfie camera the G8 make your face looks much better, but at the same time it blows away the sky where the V40 preforms better. For the selfie camera it needs more videos to validate it. But for me now the lowlight preformant is very important to see the performance from the 2 phones. Another thing i noticed about the sound, on the G8 the sound from the vind was very strong because the sound was to loud, but on the V40 i did not noticed it at all.

Was wating eagerly for this comparison.
Makes things way more clear; both are amazing phones and both can be found on nice deals.
I just cannot decide on the sound quality during video recording.
I used to think that the G8 was more focused on the medium to high pitch and that the V40 had a better low pitch/base capture, and that was why sound was clearer on the G8.
I do have a small request for your future videos and it is something no reviewer ever does but your out of the box, well-balanced reviews are ideal for that.
When recording a video sample, could you try recording really loud noises simulating a very noisy environement ?
I am always intrigued which phones have better mics and can handle higher decibels.
On some phones, when it gets a bit loud, the sound distorts.
Would be nice to have a few seconds of sample sounds or music playing really loud and judge for that aspect as well.
Just a suggestion, brother. Most people probably are not that deep into such details but I am always eager to know the practical limits of the phones. Real world information, unlike the showcase/presentations done by many youtubers.
I think they are missing the point and are focused on what is popular and stuff.
I love your channel (oh and Juan Bagnell) because you guys are old-school, in the best way possible!
Keep doing what you doing, Eric. You bring smiles, everytime you upload a new video, regardless of the phone.
Your approach is one-of-a-kind!
Mistake : Instead of just noisy environment, I should have written, a way to test normal and loud sounds that include, low(base) medium and high pitched sounds/music, so we can judge the way each device performs in normal and demanding situations. Apology for not being clear earlier.

I love my V40, but got a G8 due to being able to trade in my v30+ I don't regret it. Both are great phones! My G8, and bro use for different things.

I love your style and your reviews, I'm currently STILL using the V30+ - I want better cameras and I still can't decide whether to get the LG G8 or the V40 - I want the 3 camera setup but prefer the smaller size of the G8. The price on both are so good now but being in the UK I would have to get an G8 import from somewhere ! US maybe.

Both are very good, the zoom definitely looks better on the v40 as a result of the telephoto cam, wide a little better on the g8, a bit of back and forth... Really like my LG g8, both are great but I give the nod to the g8 because of the battery.✌🏼

Nice comparison. I perfer the v40. The G8 is good and many of the still photos looked the same as the v40. But overall the v40 is the clear winner IMO. More pleasing to the eye.

The last shot was the most interesting. The G8 made the skin tone look better even though the background was a little bright as a result. It seemed that the V40 was more concerned about the background so it left your head in the shadows. For audio, clearly the G8 mics have more brilliance.

Nice video Eric, this video makes me miss my v40, which was one of my favorite phones of all time, Until LG can get their shit together and start pushing out software updates on a regular basis, Samsung is getting my money, and if they can put some decent stereo speakers on their phones and start marketing they can be one of the top dogs

What about the battery life on both? I felt G8 has more details in the pics. The dark areas are better lit up on G8, V40 either turn too dark or overexposes and washes out the details.

I have a problem that I am trying to choose my next phone, but one thing that is very important for me is the microphone quality. Microphone quality is something that doesn't get talked about much. Does anyone have any recommendations for a phone with a very good microphone and a wide angle camera.

Hi, if you really care about audio, even on a smartphone, I suggest you check the possibility of using an external mic, like Videmic Me from Rode, very compact, simple 3.5 Jack connexion, bc it's gonna improve that significantly.
If the above is an option for you, then don't look further: LG phones are for you, they have the best DAC+PreAmp for Jack Microphones on any smartphone, by a mile. Then, G8 to V20 are the best choices, but for the associated video ability+quality obviously, G8 & V40 are the best (this very video will help choosing between both).
If you prefere or need to use the built in mics, then:
→ Sony XZ3 > iPhone XS ( /r/max) > LG G8 (lower the gain to avoid clipping) > LG V40 ~= G7 ~= V20 ~> V30 > Galaxy S10(+/e) SD > S10(+/e) Exynos ~= S9(+) ~= S8(+)
G8 might be the ultimate best internal rec here, it would require a software update to fix the weird output we heard on that video for expl (& that I heard on other reviews). Manal controls make LG models above in many situations anyway.
HTC U12+ & Nokia 9 Pureview or previous: don't know where to fit them in that list, it might be very good as well...
But, as you have a 2nd condition (Wide Angle) , you'll have to choose between :
→ S10s (best quality & widest) > G8 (quality) ~> V40 (wider) > G7 > V30 > V20 (worst WA quality but widest).
So, overall, the G8 seems to be the ultimate beast here, best audio while having the hp jack for extrnl mic , & 1 of the best wide angle. Note, that the G8 has the unique advantage to be able to rec in WA at 4K60, which no other does, & while still being abla to use manual controls !
Wow, that information suggested to me that the G8 would be strong for recording wide angle video in the car, from a corner perhaps or on the rear view mirror, I understand only using its rear camera, to squeeze in two passengers, I hope.

The V40 wipes the floor with the G8. The G8 isn't available in Germany yet. I guess my best bet is too wait till the V40's price drops. The V 30 costs 299€ right now and im not in a hurry with my G6 which still serves me well.

Both phones did really well. I can't imagine why anyone would upgrade from the V40 to a G8. The V40 is a great phone and now a little cheaper, if you're just buying one.

I normally get the v line phones but decided to change it up, I'm thinking that wasn't a bright idea. I hate how the audio on the g8 sounds like I'm under water or something. I do love the hand gestures but hate no wide angle front camera. I might return this and get the v40 instead.

The oneplus 7pro scored 111 points for its camera which is 1 point shy from being no 1.. Yet everyone is saying that the cameras are not that good..
In a video it was 6t vs 7pro.... And i preferred the day shots from 6t...
Why i mention in this video is because the g8 in my opinion has the best cameras in my country its launching with 3cameras it scores 94or 96 on dxo... Which i just don't get.. Lg always had better camera then oneplus but oneplus scores more its just stupid when tests are not fair...
Thats why i love people like you who are truthful n no fluff...
