Keep in mind that in the past, the free plugins are teasers for something larger: CLA EchoSphere leads to CLA Epic, LoFi Space leads to RetroFi. So I won’t be surprised if there’s a “bigger brother” where you get more controls and more options. Playing around with it for a bit, it’s pretty interesting. You can more aggressive with it on individual tracks and more subtle on the master bus or a stereo mix-down. I would recommend automating the drive control if you have dynamic signal (or yes, level the signal first and then apply the tube saturator). I’m curious to see what they do with the Magma series. It’s interesting given that I think there is a (cough) saturation of these kinds of plugins, especially from Waves. But then again, we shall see.
The only saturator I like on my mix bus for now is Klanghabitat cassiopeia. I have both the Magma BB Tubes and the freebie version. I like them on subs. Very nice on the Vox bus, P.A. The Oven is my main choice for the Vox channels though.
I did grab this free and I've been using it all the time, rather lightly as Chris has demonstrated well here. My setup in using my Studio One 6 DAW is only as my Livestream audio processing for now. I have this as an insert on my main stereo track. I think I'm going to experiment with this and/or S1 Red Light Distortion as a separate send bus so I can drive it more but blend it in with the dry signal. This will be more useful later on when I grab some instrument plug-ins; piano, strings, etc. I'll then experiment with song creation.
For my current mix I like it subtle on the bass - on soft and just under 2,. It gives it just that little almost inaudible extra niceness. Not bad for a free plugin.
I like your reviews but I can't handle the shaky moving camera work at the beginning, sorry I get seasick easily. Probably doesn't bother most people but thought I would mention it in case anyone else has the same problem.
Hi Chris, just a quick question. How do you think these sorts or plugin particularly this one, since I've down loaded it, compare to stock plugins in cubase for saturation? I'm guessing DaTube is of the same family. Also love the videos, I have your mixing course. Brilliant especially for cubase users. I stopped faffing with 3rd party plugins and now use stock to save cpu and 3rd party where I feel they're of benefit. I also work faster!
Hi Chris... After I signed up for one of your courses on Black Friday I tried get the Magma LIL Tube by WAVES. They said I would get it in my Email in 2 to 4 hours... They said that for 2 days and now have finally stopped saying it and yet no plugin.... GO FIGURE
I'm going to have to get this. Now if I can only get it to load and work with my Cubase 12 Pro. I have very little success with installing plugins. An chance you could do a "for dummies" video?
All this hype about a free plugin when in reality, its just another same type of plugin that we all have...too many of them in fact, so what is the point? there's so many free stuff out there that can do this stuff already
I was actually really excited about this. I don't have any simple one knob Saturation plugins that I like. I couldn't have been happier with this. I know not everyone is pleased with it but I mean it's free. What do people expect?
The most awkward plugins to move and install, or re install if you change computer are waves plugins. The way I think about them, is I'll only get one from them if I REAAALLLYYY want it.
No autogain, no oversampling, last thing is really important to me on a distortion plugin. Seems to work nice in an almost inaudible way of saturation but there have been so much plugins before can do this with a lot more options (Saturn2 for example), so this is nothing special. And the distortion of Magma sounds digital, broken and awful.

You can’t go wrong with Free99. Waves has been consistently provide free plugins year after year.

I have it and I really like it. Very nice pluggin! I'm recording a Gospel Country album and it gave me exactly what I needed. Made my day!
Easy to use, but I haven't been able to get it installed. Waves Central is very tough to work with when it doesn't work.
