Never heard much of Joe but I'll look for more now - reminds me of Joe Turner but smoother - Bassie and Williams go well together - swingin' and tight.
The bands not playing live on this vid, don't know if it's a audio added to a video later or what. Being a drummer you can tell that Harold Jones is not even close in playing what the audio says is being played. It's the kind of thing when a band tries to look like they are playing but it's a prerecorded sound track. The drums give it away easier than most of the other instruments. Still two great songs, Basie is the best.
I don't know about the rest of the band but Harold Jones the drummer is not playing live with what we are hearing here. It must be some kind of prerecorded sound track, kind of unusual for a concert setting. Being a drummer it's easy to see when the drummer is not playing what we are hearing.
Finally, a tenor who at least tries to copy Lester in his improv, lol. Every other version of Jumpin' At the Woodside, the tenor is always way too bopish. Don't get me wrong, I love bebop, but this is Lester's thing.
My right ear loved that!
Do rhythm sections ever get tighter than the Basie orchestra!?!? I could listen to this band for ever!
Music that calls to my soul.
Please someone bring this classy fun music back someone has to teach this new generation what music really is.
Woo Hoo!!! Made my day!!!

Yeah he's doing a lot of Pres like things
His posture reminds me of the tales of Pres sitting straight backed in a chair
