So important, for people like me who were born with a complete inability to relate to others (on the spectrum). I watch this stuff in awe. People are blessed with the ability to do this out of the womb. The rest of us need to take goddam courses to learn how to integrate into society -- which is fine. Humans do this beautiful dance, that I never would have noticed, if it were not for being born without knowledge of the steps

Tho not exactly like this, thank goodness, he does still teach the method in some of his seminars. Lately ... and I do hope he gets another comeupence for it ... he advertises events, shows up for an hour or two most days, and then invites all his friends with programs and products to do presentations. Is a shame so many people are sheep, looking for someone to follow and tell them what to do, w/o stopping to think for themselves.

The guys a life long grifter and you can see the despair in his eyes these days. After 30 years of never allowing a single chink in his armor to show, it's caught up with him. As It's certain that the chinks are there, a life spent in the public eye in a manner where success must be constantly portrayed to maintain image, has undoubtedly forced Tony to bury many things and never allowed him do the essential inner work of seeing right through yourself. Also, once you gain a certain amount of wisdom in life you start to see the folly of the idea that a life concept can work for everyone, you start to see the differences in peoples set, setting and life path. To have to keep preaching said concepts with this knowledge in tow is certainly burdensome for the man.
i mean he is a motivational speaker and ive got a bit of distaste for them, but he's teaching facts. I'm not saying you can't get there on your own, but some people need a push that he provides. How to Win Friends is an excellent book on this topic.
I don't think his "transform your life" programs are bad at all, but those concepts max-out very quickly.... hence, no more particular need for him...... so he must sell and sell and resell himself with all the whistles and bells! He's basically not added anything much of importance in over 30 years!
I live in Nashville a friend had an extra ticket to a Robbins event at the Ryman. It was 1995 was his first time in Nashville. He comes out on stage with a cowboy hat on and music blairing and he's got everybody out of their chairs jumping up and down doing certain movements and talking about state and state management. Long story short he and his people throughout the event are running up and down the isles talking about his tapes and products and keeping your state in a certain energy and that way to accomplish your goals. Basically the event was a live info commercial for all things Tony Robbins. The cowboy hat was a nice touch! 😂

Tony is most likely 19 years old here. Can any of you think of any 19 year old you've ever met that is remotely close to the level of communication and influence ? This is why he's a unique global phenomenon . He had mentors that gave him a foundation that he built on to create his own brand. There is no one like him.

Watch what happens at 13:51. He abruptly blows off someone who had a question, saying “I’ll answer your question in a minute” because he wanted to keep control of the room. And of course he never came back to them. Listening to Tony Robbins always makes me feel like I need a shower afterward…. This video was worth it just to understand more clearly how sleazy salespeople try to manipulate you and what to watch for, so I can run the other direction.
There's nothing wrong with persuasion if the intention is good. I use these techniques to sell apartments and all my tenants love me. I had a product that I knew they needed bc I found their needs on a personal level and got them what they needed and HOW they needed. The way I was selling before was the nice "here is what we have for this much, if you want to rent let me know". These are mainly used for the good, or they aren't used at all. Because humans are VERY good at sniffing out intention. The sleazy ones don't make it long and big

You're absolutely right lol. They have no clue. You either see it, and get it, or you don't. Once you learn NLP/Hypnosis and the power of language, emotion (states), it's hard to look at things the same. Really it's impossible. It's something that people that haven't looked into/studied this will NEVER understand. People on here are just naively saying it's manipulation. 🤣 Manipulation - to control or play upon by artful, unfair, or insidious means especially to one's own advantage. Persuasion - the act of persuading (or attempting to persuade); communication intended to induce belief or action. The main difference between persuasion and manipulation is that, usually, persuasion associates with a positive outcome whereas, manipulation, commonly, associates with a negative outcome. Similarly, the intention in persuasion is more noble and positive while manipulation has an evil and negative intention. Blackmailing people with bad emotions if they don't do something you want them to do (i.e. shaming them, making them fearful - like the government and news media does). That's manipulation. Persuasion is a balance between pushing your perspective without being aggressive, being assertive but not dismissive. It's more about intention. Offering actual value/product while recieving value/money - persuasion. Real world example: When diagnosed Psychopath "Earl Jones" from Canada cleverly persuaded, or better yet, manipulated people into investing their money with him in the hopes that he would invest their money, but instead he actually pocketed all of their money and invested none of it; it would be considered manipulation, because it was proven that his intention was to literally just steal their money while promising them that he would be investing it for them. He used charm and lied to them, took their money and gave nothing in return. Tony Robbins for example gives something in return. You may not like what he gives, therefore you don't have to buy it. In his books he offers different ways of thinking, modeled from concepts in hypnosis and neurolinguistic psychology, although he doesn't overtly claim his multiple years of experience studying and practicing in these fields. Hypnosis (change work) is merely convincing the unconscious mind to do something different (think and act differently) for the betterment of the individual. All (helping) hypnosis protocols are based on what the person wants deep down at the unconscious level. Anything else suggested that is unwanted is easily rejected by an individual in or out of trance.

I read one of Tony's books and listened to his tapes years ago and got a lot of good ideas from them. I think I spent $30 on the tapes on Ebay used. It was a good investment of my time and since then I have always liked Tony.
I’ve read his books for years and I have a thriving company beyond what I ever thought it would be. It’s my belief he is 100% correct here especially when it comes to rapport. I honestly think his methods have built my business but I’m also very open to ideas and I’m willing to try various means of finding solutions. People who complain, are not mentally flexible and have a general poor attitude are basically screwed.

I've taken several of his seminars. They are worth every penny. You obviously don't understand what he's telling you and this video does not show where he always tells you to be sincere or you will be sniffed out as a fake. There is always a way that you can build rapport and be sincere. If someone is 4 feet tall, you would never compliment him on his height. But if you are able to imagine and understand what it must feel like to be short and can relate a true story that conveys that feeling, you can get someone to feel comfortable with you. Not because you lied but because you demonstrated that you understand them. Building rapport is not manipulation. It is knowing how to approach someone in a way that makes it easy for them to be open to you, what you have to say and your product or service. No different than if you approach a child with gentle non threatening speech patterns. Or if you have an ex drill Sargeant in front of you, you are not going to sweet talk them - instead youll be direct and to the point. It's about meeting them where they are vs imposing your style or modality. He never promotes selling scam or dishonest products or services. Everyone enjoys being sold as long as they feel they are making the choice to purchase and see the value in what they purchased. If you can build rapport, identify their needs, and present your product as a solution, people will feel comfortable buying.. you are constantly being sold something, whether it's a car salesman, a commercial, your spouse, your child, your priest/rabbi. pretty much everyone you come in contact with is selling you and nearly every decision you make is a "buy".

Tony Robbins left out one key element ---You've got to have that right amount of charisma. I don't think that can be taught, it's in you or it's not. It's not just his methods, it's just him, he commands a room without being overwhelming and that's why people love to hate that he's so effective.
I've heard many criticisms of him but that one is probably the least accurate. What he is telling here is Insidious, manipulative, but it is true and substantive. Whether applying it will actually serve you in your life in the long run is another question, but the fact remains that he is describing a coherent process

Tony has had his comeup-ence, which, per the attitude he conveys in this one, he needed. Be humble. Have your prospect's best interest at heart and convey THAT attitude. If sincere, it will come through. And your prospect won't later question whether s/he has been scammed.
Yes! Very few people in this world can match the focus, vision, and determination Tony Robbins had starting at a young age. At 25 years old, he was Already making a massive impact!
I must admit the guy was an exceptionally good speaker and presenter even in his early days. I would like to really know how much he rehearsed and practiced and how much is natural talent. That "build rapport" thing though - yeah, it kind of works, but as you get older you notice when someone is trying to manipulate you and that is an instant turn-off. After getting caught with manipulation it will be very difficult to sell anything ever to that person. But you can "build rapport" without going for the manipulation schemes and that is perfectly fine, something that only the great sales people understand.
I would argue against the con label and emphasize what some people had already mentioned. I think this seminar is actually pretty advanced and for most people the information is a-little to intangible. That is unless you already have some experience in sales. Sales is an extremely difficult career and after doing it for a while, what he's saying is actually totally useful tbh. It really is all about how useful his product is to you. If you work anywhere with people, some stuff is relevant and could improve your life. The most important component really is authenticity and the challenge is truly retaining it at all costs. Being your honest to god self throughout your career is probably the most valuable lesson I've ever learned. Which I started hearing in kindergarden and re-found that gem of advice only a few years ago. Still working on it lol.
Some interesting comments here. I first saw Tony Robbins in 1991 on one of his infomercials. Tony was interviewing John McCormack about his success story with his company "Visible Changes'. My father had done business with John McCormack and I knew his backstory. John McCormack was saying how he had all his hair Salon managers go through Tony's courses and a s a result they were doing very well. Next day I bought Tony's two books and started reading. I was finishing my commercial pilot training at the time and used Tony's Neuro-Associative Conditioning (basically another word for NLP) to help me improve and I made a quantum leap from one day to the next. Fast forward 30+ years and Tony is still a student and teacher of success and his material works. Tony is a bit hyper and I really don't think it is necessary for him to use the 'foul' language he does sometimes. Overall, it is still worthwhile reading his books and attending his seminars.
If you truly believe in what you are "selling"...you do all of this naturally. Authenticity sells. He is giving the salesman's guide to "when you are selling something for money". I never had to think this hard. It is important to understand basic human behaviors, but not to use it to manipulate them, more to understand yourself and your OWN behaviors and motivations. I always liked Tony for that reason and that reason only. I never liked his fake salesman crap.
Agree completely. I'm actually surprised at how he frames it here. If you're not selling a product you genuinely believe in, you're done. People can sense a lack of authenticity in most people. I'm not a salesmen, but I do try to persuade friends and family to do things that have really benefitted me. My enthusiasm rubs off on them because it's genuine.
I think the real problem is that 95% of stuff sold is something people *don't* need at all. If you're in the lucky 5%, you're offering a meaningful service and all you need to do is share the information and your opinion on the product. Else, you're in the business of manipulating people into buying shit they don't want by creating desires that will subside after the first couple of days of using the product. Because this is how consumerism works, you will always have 95% of salesmen faking it and there's a demand for that too since consumers base their identities around the stuff they consume, so they need this constant influx of bullshit to avoid living through a massive identity crisis. This is the only Tony Robbins clip I've ever seen where he actually seems likable and genuine, because at least back here he was being honest about what he turned into.
Excellent teaching on the psychology behind selling. Especially for b2b...high dollar selling. Anybody who is not in professional selling merely see this as manipulative. But they are hypocritical because when the time comes for them to try to convince someone of something, they would naturally default to the selling psychological measures mentioned in this video.
this is how to engineer persuasion and it is much more effective than anything he has taught in a very long time. the only thing missing is transparency about the difficulty of developing the craft. congruency is essential. as long as one is unnatural in performing these routines they will only seem weird. it has to become subconscious. once that occurs a con-artist emerges. and it can be good or bad.

It is affirmative that the financial markets has indeed helped so many folks in escaping the rat race so I'm in no doubt bout how enormous anyone can actually gain from their investments, no matter what your preferences are, either long term wealth or earning daily profits the markets has it all. Well when I see all the good Tony brought to me over the years I took one of his online programs recently. And I bought 3 books from him which are good. In this video I am really impressed of his sales tactics. Worth watching!

Agreed. Over 90% of people have good enough survival skills to notice when someone tries to manipulate them. How do we notice? "This person is trying to persuade me of something" Giving someone money is an instant "no way" in all cases except for needs (food, rent, gas for the car, etc) People have built-in defenses against giving their money for useless things. If you try manipulating people, over 90% of people notice it immediately and their guard goes up. .
After watching this I feel that marketing and sales is basically - Give me your money no matter what, and if you deny to do so, i will tell you a 100 lies to convince you to give me your money. The faster you convince more money you collect.
How to sell anything? 1- Establish rapport; 2- Identity their need; 3- Give them some logical reason; 4- Atack and confess; Put them in the state where they bought and then share them your product or service; Most people whil act more for avoid, then to get something; - Share with them a solution to her problem's; - Close.
Wonderful speech Honestly. It all ties into basic sociology or interpersonal communications. I’m not someone who’s super into the salesman career style so I don’t seek those opportunities nor do I consider myself very social. But when you relate it to the ebb and flow of genuine empathetic conversation the way this guy did, I think anyone could see themselves selling to anybody if they picture themselves talking to someone they enjoy talking to.

The people who went through that didn’t even recognize their own parents afterward. Their lives were completely destroyed and then they were reprogrammed. At least one family sued. I’m pretty sure 2 families did.
Can't believe no one has mentioned this yet...the fact that he's very tall fit handsome well dressed confident smart fast talking (which is exciting) and charismatic with a pleasant but deep commanding voice is absolutely a big part of why he's successful.
People evolve all of the time. You learn and change into more purposeful path like he did over the years. At first he was a sales person just making a living, yet those skills evolve into something deeper in which later served him getting into a career that is more purposeful and meaningful.
I love how he is teaching these people that you can take money from others by building a report and using the vulnerabilities againt them to convince them that this thing will solve all their problems and he uses the freakin seminar these people paid for as an example 😂
to be fair, I think it's much easier to say it when we're in this position. Alot of them were vunerable of struggling to find their way up in this world and the more they desired it the more they were susceptible to be allured by schemes like what happened in this video. All in all, a lession for all of us, except that they had to pay for it and it might or might not have helped them at all.
He is using sales tactics and techniques. Unless you operate as a sales person or own a business that deals with sales predominantly you wouldn’t know what he is describing. It take a a lot of wit to guide a potential prospective client or customer to become a paying client or customer. You have to remember sales and not rapport build a business and put food on your table and money in your bank accounts.

I take what he's saying in nuggets of knowledge. The base of what's said actually has a Lot of value. But of course no one should copy and paste his style of method. It's a framework of thinking. It's pretty beneficial for my marketing agency.

The guys a life long grifter and you can see the despair in his eyes these days. After 30 years of never allowing a single chink in his armor to show, it's caught up with him. As It's certain that the chinks are there, a life spent in the public eye in a manner where success must be constantly portrayed to maintain image, has undoubtedly forced Tony to bury many things and never allowed him do the essential inner work of seeing right through yourself. Also, once you gain a certain amount of wisdom in life you start to see the folly of the idea that a life concept can work for everyone, you start to see the differences in peoples set, setting and life path. To have to keep preaching said concepts with this knowledge in tow is certainly burdensome for the man.

I live in Nashville a friend had an extra ticket to a Robbins event at the Ryman. It was 1995 was his first time in Nashville. He comes out on stage with a cowboy hat on and music blairing and he's got everybody out of their chairs jumping up and down doing certain movements and talking about state and state management. Long story short he and his people throughout the event are running up and down the isles talking about his tapes and products and keeping your state in a certain energy and that way to accomplish your goals. Basically the event was a live info commercial for all things Tony Robbins. The cowboy hat was a nice touch! 😂

There's nothing wrong with persuasion if the intention is good. I use these techniques to sell apartments and all my tenants love me. I had a product that I knew they needed bc I found their needs on a personal level and got them what they needed and HOW they needed. The way I was selling before was the nice "here is what we have for this much, if you want to rent let me know". These are mainly used for the good, or they aren't used at all. Manipulation - to control or play upon by artful, unfair, or insidious means especially to one's own advantage.
Persuasion - the act of persuading (or attempting to persuade); communication intended to induce belief or action.
The main difference between persuasion and manipulation is that, usually, persuasion associates with a positive outcome whereas, manipulation, commonly, associates with a negative outcome. Similarly, the intention in persuasion is more noble and positive while manipulation has an evil and negative intention.
Blackmailing people with bad emotions if they don't do something you want them to do (i.e. shaming them, making them fearful - like the government and news media does). That's manipulation.
Persuasion is a balance between pushing your perspective without being aggressive, being assertive but not dismissive. It's more about intention. Offering actual value/product while recieving value/money - persuasion.
Real world example:
When diagnosed Psychopath "Earl Jones" from Canada cleverly persuaded, or better yet, manipulated people into investing their money with him in the hopes that he would invest their money, but instead he actually pocketed all of their money and invested none of it; it would be considered manipulation, because it was proven that his intention was to literally just steal their money while promising them that he would be investing it for them. He used charm and lied to them, took their money and gave nothing in return.
Tony Robbins for example gives something in return. You may not like what he gives, therefore you don't have to buy it. In his books he offers different ways of thinking, modeled from concepts in hypnosis and neurolinguistic psychology, although he doesn't overtly claim his multiple years of experience studying and practicing in these fields. Hypnosis (change work) is merely convincing the unconscious mind to do something different (think and act differently) for the betterment of the individual. All (helping) hypnosis protocols are based on what the person wants deep down at the unconscious level. Anything else suggested that is unwanted is easily rejected by an individual in or out of trance.
Being intelligent isn't enough, you gotta be hardworking and/or have the passion for the field.

I read one of Tony's books and listened to his tapes years ago and got a lot of good ideas from them.
I think I spent $30 on the tapes on Ebay used. It was a good investment of my time and since then I have always liked Tony.

I’ve read his books for years and I have a thriving company beyond what I ever thought it would be. It’s my belief he is 100% correct here especially when it comes to rapport. I honestly think his methods have built my business but I’m also very open to ideas and I’m willing to try various means of finding solutions. I've taken several of his seminars. They are worth every penny. You obviously don't understand what he's telling you and this video does not show where he always tells you to be sincere or you will be sniffed out as a fake. There is always a way that you can build rapport and be sincere. If someone is 4 feet tall, you would never compliment him on his height. But if you are able to imagine and understand what it must feel like to be short and can relate a true story that conveys that feeling, you can get someone to feel comfortable with you. Not because you lied but because you demonstrated that you understand them. Building rapport is not manipulation. It is knowing how to approach someone in a way that makes it easy for them to be open to you, what you have to say and your product or service. No different than if you approach a child with gentle non threatening speech patterns. Or if you have an ex drill Sargeant in front of you, you are not going to sweet talk them - instead youll be direct and to the point. It's about meeting them where they are vs imposing your style or modality. He never promotes selling scam or dishonest products or services. Everyone enjoys being sold as long as they feel they are making the choice to purchase and see the value in what they purchased. If you can build rapport, identify their needs, and present your product as a solution, people will feel comfortable buying.. you are constantly being sold something, whether it's a car salesman, a commercial, your spouse, your child, your priest/rabbi. pretty much everyone you come in contact with is selling you and nearly every decision you make is a "buy".

Yes! Very few people in this world can match the focus, vision, and determination Tony Robbins had starting at a young age. At 25 years old, he was Already making a massive impact!
I must admit the guy was an exceptionally good speaker and presenter even in his early days. I would like to really know how much he rehearsed and practiced and how much is natural talent. That "build rapport" thing though - yeah, it kind of works, but as you get older you notice when someone is trying to manipulate you and that is an instant turn-off. After getting caught with manipulation it will be very difficult to sell anything ever to that person. But you can "build rapport" without going for the manipulation schemes and that is perfectly fine, something that only the great sales people understand.
I would argue against the con label and emphasize what some people had already mentioned. I think this seminar is actually pretty advanced and for most people the information is a-little to intangible. That is unless you already have some experience in sales. Sales is an extremely difficult career and after doing it for a while, what he's saying is actually totally useful tbh. It really is all about how useful his product is to you. If you work anywhere with people, some stuff is relevant and could improve your life. The most important component really is authenticity and the challenge is truly retaining it at all costs. Being your honest to god self throughout your career is probably the most valuable lesson I've ever learned. Which I started hearing in kindergarden and re-found that gem of advice only a few years ago. Still working on it lol.

Some interesting comments here. I first saw Tony Robbins in 1991 on one of his infomercials. Tony was interviewing John McCormack about his success story with his company "Visible Changes'. My father had done business with John McCormack and I knew his backstory. John McCormack was saying how he had all his hair Salon managers go through Tony's courses and a s a result they were doing very well. Next day I bought Tony's two books and started reading. I was finishing my commercial pilot training at the time and used Tony's Neuro-Associative Conditioning (basically another word for NLP) to help me improve and I made a quantum leap from one day to the next. Fast forward 30+ years and Tony is still a student and teacher of success and his material works. Tony is a bit hyper and I really don't think it is necessary for him to use the 'foul' language he does sometimes. Overall, it is still worthwhile reading his books and attending his seminars.
I love his ability of talking in front of many people, he seems to have so much confidence.
If you truly believe in what you are "selling"...you do all of this naturally.

I'm not a salesmen, but I do try to persuade friends and family to do things that have really benefitted me. My enthusiasm rubs off on them because it's genuine.
I think the real problem is that 95% of stuff sold is something people *don't* need at all. If you're in the lucky 5%, you're offering a meaningful service and all you need to do is share the information and your opinion on the product. Else, you're in the business of manipulating people into buying shit they don't want by creating desires that will subside after the first couple of days of using the product. Because this is how consumerism works, you will always have 95% of salesmen faking it and there's a demand for that too since consumers base their identities around the stuff they consume, so they need this constant influx of bullshit to avoid living through a massive identity crisis. Well when I see all the good Tony brought to me over the years I took one of his online programs recently. And I bought 3 books from him which are good. In this video I am really impressed of his sales tactics. Worth watching!

I think part of rapport is being vulnerable and being willing to open up to the person you are talking to. Especially if the pitch centers around deep questions and thought.

People have built-in defenses against giving their money for useless things.
If you try manipulating people, over 90% of people notice it immediately and their guard goes up.

How to sell anything?
1- Establish rapport;
2- Identity their need;
3- Give them some logical reason;
4- Atack and confess;
Put them in the state where they bought and then share them your product or service;
Most people whil act more for avoid, then to get something;
- Share with them a solution to her problem's;
- Close.
You dont need anything of that. People pay for you to lie to them. Just go after there desires not there needs.

Wonderful speech Honestly. It all ties into basic sociology or interpersonal communications. I’m not someone who’s super into the salesman career style so I don’t seek those opportunities nor do I consider myself very social. But when you relate it to the ebb and flow of genuine empathetic conversation the way this guy did, I think anyone could see themselves selling to anybody if they picture themselves talking to someone they enjoy talking to.

to be fair, I think it's much easier to say it when we're in this position. Alot of them were vunerable of struggling to find their way up in this world and the more they desired it the more they were susceptible to be allured by schemes like what happened in this video.
All in all, a lession for all of us, except that they had to pay for it and it might or might not have helped them at all.
He is using sales tactics and techniques. Unless you operate as a sales person or own a business that deals with sales predominantly you wouldn’t know what he is describing. It take a a lot of wit to guide a potential prospective client or customer to become a paying client or customer. You have to remember sales and not rapport build a business and put food on your table and money in your bank accounts.
