Hey! I've played some of the playtests, and can give some info here. (I haven't signed NDA's and all this info is semi public I think.) Currently there are two (kinda 3) currencies: Taps, Hype and unlocks. You do challenges and gain levels to unlock the ability to buy things for Taps, Hype is used to "upgrade"(get new colorways) of those things you bought. You get taps from doing challenges and hype from levelling up. Over the course of the playtests it has become exponentially more grindy. In the latest playtest I got access to, Hype was the rarest commodity, I think a certain type of challenge was supposed to give hype but it was multiplayer only and they couldn't get people to play it, even with a big bar across the bottom that asked people to play it. You get Taps in absolute abundance though, so I'm not certain what the "Paid currency" would be. Issue 1: I do worry about no single player, BUT: Create-a-park was hosted like a local server, I think the intention is for create-a-park to be on local server. It's actually really cool because I could make something, invite a friend, edit it real time etc. anyways, I'm pretty certain that Full Circle know fully well what EA is like and have intentions to make the game playable single player if the plug gets pulled on servers. Issue 2: I highly doubt this will happen. All the features are really janky, except held flips which is only somewhat janky. I can't remember any events that forced you to do held flips, but I can remember challenges that use a certain new feature, so that almost definitely won't be locked. Issue 3: Challenges aren't developed enough in the playtest for me to comment on this at the moment. I don't think anything required Taps or Hype for entry, but there also were no contest type challenges. I do agree that having world-wide contests the way you described would be pretty stupid though, I also believe the game is gonna be exploitable to the point where a small group of exploiters would take the top 10 every time in a such event. I'm hoping they do more of a Forza Horizon pop-up event type thing instead, maybe not as frequently as they had it in FH4 but having a pop-up event happen like twice an hour or something could be nice. Issue 4: That would be absolutely crazy! I imagine more so that there would be a certain amount of contests you can enter in a day. I don't like that idea but I don't think that's too interruptable either, afterall a majority of people playing EA Skate just wanna like play while injured or in the case of the 53%(!!!) of people who don't skate in the official discord server, just like playing casually. I think the extremely competitive people are gonna be the ones exploited in such a system and I'm kind of not *that* against that idea. If someone's gonna be exploited I don't think it should be the casuals. Issue 5: I think you're partially right. I don't think the game will just dissappear and I'm not sure they'll do a "re-releasing everything in one patch" type deal in the end either. This goes too much in to theory crafting for me to say anything solid but I do remember an area being fenced in for one playtest and then that fence being gone and a new area being there next playtest. I can't remember if anything was there previously though. Somewhat related. Currently we have the FCCC (couldn't tell you what it stands for, the woman's voice was annoying so I skipped the explenation). It's a small region of the map which is the same size as create-a-park. They have daily rotations of user created maps, in the actual playtest they were usually obstacle courses created by the devs, but the idea is to have them be user created. One thing that bothered me is that there wasn't any obvious way to "like" or "save" those parks that showed up in the FCCC. Which means if someone creates something you really liked, you couldn't save it. There is a create-a-park browser though, which has a lot more functionality than the Skate 3 "Online parks" browser. I really really like it. :) This is an obvious way that the game could change up frequently and something where idk what they would do after a potential server shut-down. Ultimately: I truly believe that Full Circle has good intentions. I also believe they might be hiding things from EA given that a large amount fo the Full Circle team has already been screwed over by EA at least twice with the rushed Skate 3 launch and the closure of Black Box. I know for a FACT that at least some members of Full Circle wants this to be the most immortal skateboarding game ever and I feel quite certain those members will work to make that happen. They've also said before that they want IRL payments to stay exclusively cosmetic, I'm not sure how well they'll manage to do that but EA has learned very recently that the customers won't sit and take it quietly, as proven with the recent Apex Legends battlepass changes that got semi-reverted to a much better place. I'm hoping that some of the brands that end up in Skate. will get royalties from purchases, some brands are already in the game and I think it'd be healthy for skateboarding if companies or even skaters actually got a cut of royalties.
I'm always reminded of the fact that in World of Warcraft, the first ingame store item was a mount for 15$. Nothing gameplay changing, just a differnent looking beast to ride on. That skin alone made more profit than the entirety of Starcraft 2.
Skate 4 isn’t for OG Skate 1 & 2 fans.. this is for the trick liners that took over the game. I’m not saying that from a place of hate but everyone who played 1&2 (Before trick lining became a thing at the tail end of skate 2) and mastered the game how it was supposed to be played leaning more towards the sim side of things xl w mods is what y’all are looking for it feels like what skate 3 should have been in my opinion… also love this video!
just get session, no need for mods and the game is still actively being developed. we getting the new updates next 2 patches , more to come crazy how that works.

i feel like a lot of these takes are coming from someone who doesn't really understand f2p games with microtransactions, full circle have said theyre taking a lot of ideas from apex legends, which is one of the less greedy free games out there. you dont pay for any gameplay advantages or extra mechanics during gameplay, you can still get good cosmetics for free too.

The Skate share pack does not give you anything. It just unlocks the ability to share things and download things from the community. You're talking about the Filmer Pack. 1:29 / 3:28 - This is just ridiculous. I know we all love to crack jokes about how "haha pay $5 to kickflip" but those jokes have always been exaggerations. I mean, just think about it for a second if this was implemented. You break your board and then there's just no game until you pay $5 to get a new in-game deck? Yeah, that game is dead on arrival. At most what I can see them doing is sell different styles so your pushing and tricks look different. 2:24 - Why not? The technology is there. As an example, if you're sponsored by Vans you will see Vans posters around the town while another player who's sponsored by Lakai will see Lakai posters in their game. It's kinda odd how there's so many misconceptions about multiplayer games in 2024.
I cant see them taking spots away with seasonal changes. That would be a death nell for the game. Skaters get VERY attached to spots. Need proof of that concept? Look what SL has been doing with their spot resurrection events that literally rebuild famous skate spots that have been destroyed.
It's crazy to think that since the ps4 and xbox1 dropped sequels to games are taking 15 YEARS to make on the ps2 a lot of games were trilogies and had spin offs or at least a sequel IE GTA Tony Hawk games, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy etc etc now we're lucky if we get a sequel a decade and a lot of times when they finally come out the older games were superior anyway. I dont think this game will be as good as the other 3
As long as I have access to a skateboard, a character to do trick with and some spots to do tricks off i dont even need to look at any of the paid cosmetic stuff. none of that matters. in session i select the default guy and just go.
The thing I'm most worried about regarding skate 4 is the art style. Maybe I'm weird but I think art style, atmosphere and soundtrack are just as, if not more important than gameplay. Skate 1 is one of my favourite ever games because of how creative and unique the menus/cutscenes are, the UI, filters and the REALLY strong 2007 atmosphere the game has. Its characters are the best in the series IMO, they're easily the most authentic and it really feels like you're part of this gang of broke skate punks having fun and messing around with a dream of making it in the skateboarding world. I don't like how a lot of new games look so boring, most of them seem to have this horrible flat UI and even the graphics look extremely similar between most games. I don't feel anything when I look at them, they don't put me in any kind of mood that reflects what's happening or makes me want to play the game, they're easily confused with one another, totally forgettable. I know from what's been shown so far that skate 4 will have this flat modern/corporate art style so I find it really difficult to get excited about it, even though I have no doubts it will be the best in the series gameplay wise. Everything else about the game potentially having these horrible paywalls and using every psychological trick in the book to make you spend money is just going to make it worse for me.
Honestly as long as the controls and physics feel as good as Skate 3 I don't care how much they whore it out with paid cosmetics and paid zones/missions. But if they lock tricks behind a paywall... that's where i draw the line. Whats the point of playing skate if I cant do the totally real trick "Miracle Whip"
I’m definitely worried most about the preservation aspect too. With the main story idea being San Vansterdam being rebuilt over time, I just know there’s gonna be a bunch of spots that will be changed over time that we’ll never get to skate again. On top of that, also tying in with what you said about the game just ceasing to exist once the servers shut down. As far as monetization goes, I doubt they’ll do anything as egregious as timers or paywalled tricks, so I imagine it will basically be cosmetics only, which is still frustrating but not as bad as gameplay stuff. Most companies have realized that the way to go right now without upsetting fans too much is battle passes and premium currency which is what I bet will be the case for skate as well.
It's the same problem with everything EA ever releases, you have to hope the development team will somehow bypass EA's usual shenanigans to release anything good. Worked well with College Football 25 but that's about it.
I've played the beta a couple times, it's better than 3 already minus harder to late flip and no finger flips, and I think there wasn't any grind grabs. I haven't posted screens or gameplay but I've talked about it a lot maybe that's why they haven't invited me for another round XD. the 720 flip you keep tricks held down and they keep going til you land, any flip or shuv ect. The park you show @ 4:33 is the most fun I have had in any skateboarding game and that's just a small part of the map. Events are "pop up" and there are many. See yall out there when it launches
Then play those games. Skate is not a dual stick skate sim, and it never has been. No one wants dual stick controls in THPS, so why do you want it in skate? Just play Session or XL or Skatelab
I think they should work on making a full game instead of trying to milk people for money. Skate has always been a full package out of the box so this half baked stuff they’ve been showing with loads of micro transactions just really turns me off.
Every single one of these "issues" started with maybe or could. None of these have been confirmed or even hinted at by any of the releases. you are so cooked, try eye drops before the next video.
it will be fine its just gonna be rammed with over the top cosmetic bs if you got the feedback survey the cosmetic items they used as examples were genuinely terrible
For free to play games, I am willing to buy about 50-70 dollars worth of stuff it is worth it. Just have to make sure it is spent on stuff that is worthwhile. 5$ for a single trick might be a big ask.
Imagine being in the middle of a line and a box pops up to tell you your bushings have been compromised and you have to suffer wheel bite until you pay EA $5. I really hope they aren't that scummy, but some of these free to play games have some very shady tactics. Loot crate gambling for deck graphics and character clothing is probably a guarantee. I can't imagine a paywall behind general gameplay mechanics but cosmetics 100% will be. I hate modern gaming sometimes...
I feel The game engine will be decent but since its 2024, the nickel and diming is gonna be up the wazoo. in-game advertising might also be insane. just a bunch of small annoyances that are really gonna add up. and like you mentioned later, since its focused on Online and free 2 play...10-15 years from now they will shut down the servers and that will be that.😑 I'd much rather we got a port/remaster of the original trilogy for the PC so fans can make mods and the games can live forever
As long as the DLCs are cosmetic, I PERSONALLY wouldn't worry. Although your #4 point.... wow that would kill the game for me. That's a NON starter. My primary WANT is SOME sort of single player option. I'm not even talking about a story mode. From what I remember, I couldn't even complete the story mode of the past skate games because I would always set the physics setting to realistic mode, and you coulnd't complete some missions because you simply don't have enough speed or height in that mode. So I would just stick to a ledge, and just repeat a trick over and over. I want some "PRIVATE" mode, where you can just enjoy the game yourself. Online only? Ok, at least give me the option to set the lobby to private so I can play alone. Anyways, I don't have too much hope for this game, because looking at the dev video, it seems pretty low budget team. Doesn't look like EA set aside too much funds for this dev team.
I'm trying really hard to reserve my judgements until the game actually comes out and all, but as has been discussed, this game has been in development for what seems like an unreasonably long time (who knows, could be a 5 person team working their butts off, but 4 years for a free to play skate game seems strrraaaaaaange to me) and the longer it takes is the less hope I have. I get that the free to play model is part of the gaming world that we're going to have to get used to, as it's how the studios have decided they make the best income, and having been a Rocket League player on and off for years I don't entirely hate the concept... But it's EA. The things they could lock behind a paywall, and the lack of information about what'll be behind that wall at this point have really killed my hype. Two years ago I was straight up defensive over this title hoping folks would give it a shot before poopooing it... But if it's an endless slow drip of non-information that EA wants to use to build the brand, they've already blown it bad enough to be very concerned about the game. This whole "announce a game and don't release it or any solid information for the better part of half a decade" is a TERRIBLE publicity tactic.
Skater XL is the best skate game I have ever played, in my opinion it's slightly better than skate because doing tricks feel so much more realistic than skate... just wish skater xl had a dev team that cared about updating the game with new maps and features like being able to get off your board would be nice but it is what it is.
They will probably ruin it with either more pay to play scam methods like gta v with shark cards or by Woke propaganda like every other AAA dev company has done to ruin their franchises
I need a single player progression campaign I can play when the online side inevitably goes offline forever. I don't care about a story, I just want a ton of goals to complete that get progressively harder, like THPS. I don't care about special tricks or cosmetics, just give me the controls, the parks and the goals and don't take them away and I am good.
My only concern is that if Skate 4 launch and it's not successful by EA standards there's the chance for the game to be pull out from stores or digital stores meaning if the game is full MMO with always online crap they can shutdown the servers and nobody can play the game even if you have a physical copy.
I said this because of what is happening with this game called The Crew, the game isn't that great but it has some good stuff with you being able to drive the entire US (of course is a curated map is not 1 to 1 but is amazing how much stuff there is) this game and any other should be able to still function even offline is stupid to think there are games sold full price and if the Publisher decides the game isn't selling anymore they can just deny you access to it even if you have a physical copy, I don't want that for a Skate game or any other game.
What do you think? Do you trust the team, or do you think they'll mess it up like I do?
EA is horrible now, don't trust them with anything anymore. They are 100% bought in on "Game as a service" model, and it ruins games.
The game will rely on a centralized server so its a pass for me since I want to own the product that I bought and just like you want to be able to play games years after the initial release.

This is an obvious way that the game could change up frequently and something where idk what they would do after a potential server shut-down.

I pray they don’t add shoe/sock ripping. Board breaking is understandable but I draw the line at shoes and socks
Underwear breaking.
Yeah they would never do that.

Is Chris Cole still going to be in the game?

Now that we have Session, we need a simulation control mode.
My boy on that good medi tho????
1:50 wtf?!?!!?!
Storing one clip to affording expensive equipment will be very difficult to fliming in a skateboarding contest

Man stop it lol. There's a reason skate is way bigger than those games. Most people don't wanna do 7 inputs to do a kickflip
I think they should work on making a full game instead of trying to milk people for money. Skate has always been a full package out of the box so this half baked stuff they’ve been showing with loads of micro transactions just really turns me off.

For free to play games, I am willing to buy about 50-70 dollars worth of stuff it is worth it. Just have to make sure it is spent on stuff that is worthwhile. 5$ for a single trick might be a big ask.
PLAY SESSION INSTEAD.

Slim Jim: (the quiet kid in school, plays alone in the corner during recess)
@@RhoamHanson we get more information all the time… i’d rather have 5 year development with updates than 5 years with no info…
