✔Knife making - Handmade BACK LOCK FOLDING KNIFE w/ Stabilized Wood Handle

- The first backlock folding knife we've made.
No cnc was used in this build even though some say you need a cnc to make a folder :)
This was without a doubt the most challenging project that we've worked on. There was a lot of filling and fitting of the mechanism, but we're pretty happy with the result. The knife is not perfect and has a couple of small errors, but it's just a prototype and we know exactly what to improve in the process to make it like we want it to be.
The mechanism works pretty well and this is the strong part of the whole project. The defects are mainly aesthetical, the spacer could be fitted better and the small screws should be positioned further from the edge of the handle.
We will also reduce the thickness of the spacer, the lock and the blade to 3.5 mm instead of 4.4 mm. This should significantly reduce the weight of the whole knife.
With that said, this knife is not for sale, however we will make a couple improved pieces for sale soon 😊
I hope you'll enjoy the video.

Do you prefer folding or fixed knives?
Tak :)
Bardzo ładny folderek, no i szybko poszło, w parę minut zgrabny nożyk ;)
Planujecie mniejszego brata, tak z 80mm ostrza? Bardzo ładny efekt końcowy, brawo.
Personally fixed knives but wouldn't hurt to have one or two good folding knives!
I trust the durability, strength and leverage that can be attained from a fixed knife, but love the look and versatility of custom folding knives. lets face it though, a folding knife is suitable for majority of tasks!
@@marcinp.brodala8350 Planujemy, ale najpierw musimy dopracować ten model ;)
@@sapphiro15 That's true ;)
Skill and patience and the result being a work of art.
Thank you
Great job 👍👍👍
Hey! I loved the drill bit-backed sanding trick for your plunges. Way cool!
Hey 👋 man how you doing bro I'm so in love with that knife 🔪🔪 and really waiting for the next new work buddy blessings
I love watching this type of knife being made as the level of skill involved is amazing well done keep the videos coming
Thanks a lot, we surely will 👍
that is actually the best crafting video ive seen so far, don't know why u dont have many subs...
Thank you, we appreciate what we have :)
Very quality and very beautiful knife
The music? On point, love it!
Thanks man 😊
That's ridiculous, I wish I could do this. Absolutely beautiful knife.
Polecam zaopatrzyć się w niewielką piłę taśmową. Ogromna oszczędność czasu i ergonomia i dokładność pracy w porównaniu z piłką ręczną czy wyrzynarką. Piękna robota, pozdrawiam :)
Dzięki :)
Excellent work 👍 👍 👍 💪
Artist !
The patience and precision that went into making this makes it fascinating to watch. Very cool. I'd carry that for daily use. 👍
Thank you 😊
That turned out awesome!
Super Backlock Folder 👍👍👍👍
Thanks 🤙
Pretty damn impressive piece.....especially for your first one. I'm looking forward to more stuff like this
Thanks, there certainly will be more! ;)
Brilliant, wonderfull finish.
Thank you
Excelente trabajo,. Precisión y paciencia de matriceria.. saludos 🇦🇷👍
Incredible skill! I binge-watched all of your videos. I hope that with enough practice I can achieve this level of skill. Keep up the amazing work.
Thanks, I'm sure you can ;)
Красивая работа 👍
This is something I can really get into! I've never carried a fixed blade but like watching them being made. I've always carried a pocket folding knife
Enjoyed your video and gave it a Thumbs Up
Thank you 😊
@@BarbershopCustoms You're welcome
Beautiful work!!! For real it is very inspiring to see you make that with mostly hand tools. Great work!!!
Thanks a lot 🤗
Like like like 👍🏻
Thanks
Nice work!
Thank you
Beautiful work.
Thank you
Beautiful knife. A highly skilled and precise build. Does it need a pocket clip?
Super! The cool.
Piękny nóż i cała praca bardzo ładnie zrobiony 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Dziękuję 😊
@@BarbershopCustoms A tak poważnie jaka cena jeśli można wiedzieć ?
@@bona5bona583 ciężko jeszcze powiedzieć, bo musimy najpierw wyeliminować błędy prototypu, ale prawdopodobnie w okolicach 1600 zł
@@BarbershopCustoms Szczerze to pomyślę.
@@bona5bona583 Ok ;)
Incredible skill and knife, I love folders but they are soo much more work.
Nice job mate
Thank you, yeah, the amount of work to make one is huge
Nice folder
Thanks ;)
Fantastic Knife 😊😊
Thank you 😊
I really like this type of video
Thanks
What a great work!!!
Thank you 😊
I like both but that was a sweet build!
Thank you
Very nice knife good job
Thank you :)
Prettiest pocket knife I've ever seen
Thank you 😊
Learning a 3d cad software would be extremely helpful for these folding knives, you can precisely design them and print paper templates to create parts from
I use cad to design the details of every knife after I draw it on paper. We just don't show it on the videos because it isn't very attractive to watch (we have actually tried on one of the previous videos and the vid didn't turn out good)
Hey, first of all great work! This is incredible.
I was wondering what the best way to make the spring is and I couldn't find much on the internet. I see you guys have filed a very thin piece of spring steel, bent it to the desired shape, and then normalized/annealed/quenched it to return the elasticity of the strained metal?
The procedure you used seems very complicated for me and I don't know the temperature/timing involved, so do you reckon there's a simpler way to do this that will still work properly? For example, does the spring need to be curved upwards in order to work effectively, or could it still do the job while it's straight?
Yes, you have described the process correctly, just add temping in the end.
It could work when it's straight, but you would need to design the mechanism differently and I think it's way harder to design it that way.
You just earned a new subscriber!! Can you please make a video where you show in detail the locking mechanism and pivot bar?
Thank you, I think we will make another vid of making a folding knife, but I'm not sure when :)
Great looking knife and job making it!!
Thanks
@@BarbershopCustoms You're welcome
Beautiful 😍
Thanks 😊
Good work bro
Thanks man
Hello, may I ask a question? What temperatures did you use for the spring heat treatening? I am just in a process of making a back lock folding knife too and making the spring is a mystery 😁
I Love What U Make Dude!! Thumb Ups From Malaysia.. 👍
Thanks
Great work. I am on my third lockback and find making the spring the hardest part. What steel do you use for the spring and how do you temper it and to what color? Many thanks. Alan
Having the same problem and came here looking for the answer
Simplesmente magnífico!
I'm not a huge fan of the design, but excellent work! I home someday to attain the level of skill I see here.
Thanks
Should the lockback also be spring steel-like or should it not be hardened?
Tasteful design
Thanks
How and from what type of iron is the spring made?
Myself, I prefer folding knives, this knife looks really good, I'd like to get one some time, and as far as a cnc machine, yes it would be faster, but then in my opinion it wouldn't be a custom made knife ,that's just my opinion
CNC gives you more precision, if a knife would be CNCed, but it would be one of a kind knife, it would still be a custom knife. It wouldn't be handmade anymore though :)
@@BarbershopCustoms the mechanism could be cnc'ed but if the blade was cnc'ed I don't think I could consider it custom, as that could be easily replicated as many times as you wanted even if you finished it off with a belt sander and or hand sanded
I love your stuff.... And o have to ask what is the black sheet material you epoxy the scales to?
Am i the only one hearing Undertale Soundtracks??
What was that black sheet you're glueing to the wood handle? Seem unnecessary but it look cool
Paper micarta :) liners actually give the wood a bit more strength
@@BarbershopCustoms do you interested to made stabilized wood handle? Actually i would like to see the process too
Добавить нечего,очень круто!!!
At 11min 59 seconds you can see the knife won't work, the blade has already made contact with the spring holder and it hasn't even bottomed out against the lock lever. It would dull the knife every time you closed it. mabey you could grind down the spring holder but it doesn't look that way to me.
At what temperature did you temper this knife? Do you temper all knives at the same temp or change it according to like the type of use the knife will go through?
where do you get these little screws from
Beautiful and meticulous, however, I see no stopping pin nor a detent.
It doesn't need one when the mechanism is designed properly :)
Doskonale dobrana muzyka. Co to jest za brzeszczot w 4:59?
Brzeszczot wolframowany :)
To my mind the guard area looks kinda too sharp, but nevertheless nice design. There are not too many knives with stabwood scales made nowadays.
Wich Steel did you use for the spring
4h13
Great great work!! How do you do to give the elasticity to the lock spring?
It's a annealed steel so it's soft, then we harden it and it's springy
I'm curious, why not do a frame lock? Which do you think is easier?
Just because I am more familiar with back locks and I was more comfident making one. I think the difficulty is similar and depends on your knowledge at the time
Barbershop Customs Cool, thanks. BTW, I think you're the only RUclipsr that reads all of their comments.
@@Triple.Stripe.Knives I believe it's important :)
Muito bom
Respect, man! How many time you spend for this work?
Too much :D
I think it was 4-5 times more than on a regular size fixed blade knife, but I think it's going to be reduced a bit as the first time is always the slowest and by now we have some things figured out ;)
cool music
Is that grinder a pawel puszynski grinder?
If it is how many hp have the motor? Thx and congratulation
Yes it is, I think it's 1.1 or 1.5 kW, I'm not sure though
Are you gonna be selling pocket knives on your website now
Yup, not this one though, since it's just a prototype and it has small defects 😊
How thick should the steel be in the knife,
It depends on the purpose of the knife. The thicker the steel is, the tougher the knife. But with thickness also comes worse cutting performance
@@BarbershopCustoms ok thanks again.
Where to find similar plans?
In your own head :)
The grinder is a product from Japan!
How are you feeling?😊
It´s a pawel puszynski grinder. The motor may be japan made though.
I bet the money you waste on 2X72 sanding belts, you make up with extended use of black rubber gloves.
LOL great video. Im gonna like and subscribe.
I'm afraid it's not the case since these gloves tend to break easily :)
Ahhhhhhh that music
👍👍👍
Gdzie kupujecie materialy na rękojeść

What kind of metal is the knife?
It's D2 steel :)
@@BarbershopCustoms thank you I'm thinking of making a folding knife myself
@@Punisher-ko9yl good luck bro
if i where to make a suggestion to a handle material would be diospyros mun; its a type of ebony that comes from the country of laos. its such a beautiful wood and i use it all the time when i make my handle scales, I would love to see you use it in one of your knives. keep up the great work my dude
Thanks, I'll try to get a piece of that wood ;)
@@BarbershopCustoms sweet, looking forward to it
The song at the begining would be great for the intro of a murder mystery in italy where someone is making a bomb or smthing and it shows only there hands. Someone make that movie, now!
I just gotta learn how to make a bomb first :D
no bearing or at least ftoroplast insert? hmm...
It's on the washers :)

The thought of the process. Skill n just the knowhow plus the tunes with just enough of the machinery noise... Ur like a comilion (can't spell that lizards name rite me finks) but all blended brilliant but not as good as the blade my friend 👌🏴🍀

That’s really nice but I don’t even want to know the price 😂😂
