  • Phil Johnson (Executive Director of Grace To You - ‪@gracetoyou‬ and Pastor/Elder) answers several questions about Mormonism at the 2023 G3 Conference (‪@G3Ministries‬). Mormonism seems like "just another Christian denomination" on the surface-but the beliefs and teachings of the LDS Church are quite contrary to Christian beliefs and Biblical teaching.
In this interview with Phil Johnson, we ask questions like "Was the Trinity a product of pagan philosophy?" and "Can we trust our spiritual experiences to know what is true?"

Only problem is that when we translate John 1:1 correctly, and scholars, even many evangelival scholars, agree, then a correct translation of John 1:1 would be: "And the word was Deity"... and this actually is something in accordance to a old hebrew tradition, where someone takes on the title of someone else, acting in his name, for example we get this in Exodus 3 where the "Angel of the Lord" speaks as "the God of Israel", and we also have other people like Metatron that take on the titel of "Yaweh", which is why people confuse one with the other..
In Exodus 23 we have the "name of the Lord in him", refering to the Angel of the Lord, where the Angeld of the Lord can even forgive since (as did the Apostles of Christ)..
So, Mormons do read John 1:1, but it seems that how LDS would define it is currently more supported by the academic consensus on that matter..

"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works."
The key phrase here being "That the man of God may be perfect." Your problem is thinking that scripture makes one a man of God. One must first be a man of God. Then the scriptures are profitable.
As for false prophecy, that depends on interpretation. Many prophecies from thousands of years ago are yet to come to fruition. Does that make the Prophets false? And even Jesus Christ said that to believe in him, one wouldn't die. Yet he, his Apostles, and all his followers have died. Does that make Jesus a false savior? Of course not. It all goes to our understanding or comprehension of the meaning of the scripture or prophecy. Sometimes counsel is perceived as prophecy. There are many excuses to reject the entire matter of God if that is your aim to do. It is easy.

The idea that “scripture is true because it says it’s true” is laughable at best.
The Bible, it self begins with two contradictory stories of the creation, written by different people at different times, and yet there are people that actually believe that every word of the Bible is written by God.

In other wods, prior to that, spirit was considered to actually be physical, just in a more refined, pure and everlasting way.
Scriptures like Genesis 32:30, or Exodus 33:11 can only be explained away when we presupposed univocality of the entire Bible, and decide that because John agrees with John, a Moses or a Jacob has to be false in their statement.

@@BrendonKing There is no such thing as a scholar that is unanimously accepted by everyone simply for the fact that you will always have scholars and followers with their own agenda.. This is why we are only left with first, to look at what the majority of scholars agree on, and second, to seek out scholars that have proven to care more about truth than to make their own dogma work. And so the claim that Yaweh was believed to have had a body and a wife is common consensus amongst most scholars that have proven to care more about truth and facts than about making anyones worldview work..
So if we take this as a standart, look at the facts we have, be willing to let truth speak for itself, then there is no way anyone can deny or bend away that Yaweh was believed to have had a body and a wife in the more ancient days...
So instead of seeking something that is unrealistic, meaning a scholar everyone will unanimously accept, just study all these things without the presupposed believe of ones own, inerratn interpretation of the Bible, because as long as people never give any room to the possibility that things may actually be a little differen than ones own worldview, they would not even accept if every scholar would perfectly agree on this, because this is what the inerrandy of the Bible (or rather ones own iinerrant interpretation of the Bible) is all about, nothing and noone can falsify ones own interpretation and therefore there is not evejn any need to engage with things outside this own narrative.

You have the scriptures but seem to be good at twisting them. You proof text them to fit the conversation at hand, but those scriptures you use weren't holding the same conversation.
The only thing that actually matters about Joseph is the original revelation he received. The first vision of the father and son telling him they were going to rebuild their church through him. Everything else after was either of God or of the devil.
So do critical thinking about the first vision. All four accounts say he read the bible which said if he asked he would receive, if he lacked wisdom he could ask God. So he went to do that. He said the father and son appeared to him and told him his sins were forgiven and he would help rebuild the church. You say that was of the devil? Think about that for that to even be possible it would mean you have to disbelieve Jesus when he said you'd receive, you'd have to claim James a false apostle. You'd have to believe Satan is more powerful than the father and that he could intercept that prayer, stop God from hearing it, then appear as the father and son to lead him to Jesus to lead him away from Jesus. Jesus said his sins were forgiven, so now you have to agree with the Pharisees who said Jesus was casting out the devil by the power of the devil. And even if I leave the saints to join your church you'd have to be consistent and tell me Satan is still more powerful than the father and can intercept my prayers in your church too. So if God cannot guarantee answering our prayers how can he guarantee our salvation?
Do you see how fast your position falls apart about this case?
So I'll ask again was that a vision of God or of the devil?
Are you willing to do that? Are you willing to throw the bible out, claim Jesus was casting out devils by the power of the devil, and teach Satan is more powerful than the father? Because that's where you stand right now if you double down that was a vision of the devil. So are you willing to do that? Or are you willing to trust God instead of this false teacher?

Everything you’re saying presupposes that Joseph Smith actually had the vision, of which there are 9 differing accounts, not 4. The 1832 account written in his own diary tells a different story and was kept hidden for a long time, and was actually ripped out and taped back in. We’re not talking about different eye witnesses emphasizing different details. This is one person who keeps changing their story-which we call lying. So I’m inclined to believe he just made it up.
James 1:5 is to fellow believers for them to pray about what to do during trials and tribulation. It has nothing to do with praying about truth claims. So Joseph Smith already misapplied it to begin with.
The difference between his vision and Jesus with the Pharisees is that Jesus was actually physically there performing miracles in front of many people. All we have from Joseph Smith is a supposed vision from years before he told anyone. He could make them say whatever he wants in his story. This is like his “prophecy” that people would hate him and speak poorly of him. How convenient that he would share this “prophecy” in 1837 when he was already well known and sending missionaries into Canada. Same with the “prophecy” he added about himself into his “translation” of the Bible. All we have is a book published by Joseph Smith in 1830 that contains a prophecy that he would publish a book in 1830. Again, how convenient.
So no, nobody is saying the devil has more power.

Your argument seems to really lean heavily on the assumption that Joseph Smith really prayed which church to join. You seem to think that if he really prayed that prayer, then the Father and Son *must* have physically manifested themselves to him and instructed him on how to reboot their church--the only other possible explanation is that the devil "intercepted" Joseph's prayer.
Do you apply that to other people in history as well?
I mean, Joseph's first vision supposedly took place in 1820. That's 1400 years at least since the true church died, according to Mormonism. How many people in that 1400 year time span do you think prayed asking God for help discerning religious truth? (The 1500s-era English poet and preacher John Donne is a good example; see his Holy Sonnets.) Did the Father and Son physically manifest to each of them? If not, does that mean that Satan must have "intercepted" *their* prayers? Why weren't men like that chosen to be the new prophet of the last dispensation, if they asked for wisdom from God about which church to join?
My answer is that God is satisfied with the clarity of His word. He has every freedom to manifest Himself to whoever He wants to, whenever He wants to, but His normal attitude seems to be: "I've already commented on this issue in My Word; go read it." That's how Jesus argued whenever he touched on a contemporary controversy: "Have you not read what is written...?"
You also bring up the fact that you feel that to reject Mormonism is to say that the devil is more powerful than God. I actually think the opposite is true: that as long as you believe that the church spent 1400 years comatose, and there was no true church on the earth, that makes God look incredibly weak--especially since he promised he would keep his church (Matthew 13, Matthew 16, John 10). I say God keeps His church--but also lets falsehoods grow up from time to time because people lie for personal gain--about God as well as about almost anything else.

Why we would spend time opposing Mormonism -
Because we believe that the LDS church teaches (to use a Biblical phrase) the "doctrine of demons," a Gospel that stands contrary to the work of Christ and contrary to God's revelation in Scripture.
That means that whoever follows such teachings are "severed from Christ" and subject to the wrath of God. We WANT our neighbors to come to a knowledge of the truth and be saved from the wrath to come. We do NOT desire for them to die and be subject to wrath on the day of judgment on account of deceptions and false teachings...and so it's worth confronting these things for the sake of the souls of our LDS friends, family, and neighbors.
We don't do this to earn money, but to "save others by snatching them out of the fire" (Jude 23).
Paul says that part of the roll of the "Lord's servant" is to "correct his opponents with gentleness [that] God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth." (2 Tim. 2:24-26), and Jude commands us to "contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints."
God desires that every man should reach true repentance, and that all should know the true Gospel of grace and mercy through Christ...we desire the same things for our LDS friends, who we believe to be cut off from Christ.
