I mean we got a pretty fair amount mecha in that decade and I'm pretty sure it would've at least garnered a lot of attention. We got stuff like Voltron, Robotech, Tekkaman Blade, Gundam and others I can't remember; and that's not counting what showed up with Toonami. If it did show up stateside; I'm shocked I missed out on it; and if it didn't, I'm shocked it didn't.
No it didn't. It wasn't broadcasted on TV, nor did the toy line come over from Japan. The TV series did get released on DVD by Media Blasters, but due to poor sales, only the first half was dubbed (by Central Park Media using the same New York voice talents as 4Kids, but dubbed uncut), but all 49 episodes were available in Japanese with English subtitles. However the GaoGaiGar Final OVA wasn't released.

放送当時、模型誌モデルグラフィックスの愛ゆえに暴走した作例は凄まじく、簡単に真似出来るシロモノではなかった。
例:ガンドーベル、ガングルーのロボ形態の為に、ガンプラ２体(GMだったか)を使用。
DX玩具の改造作例は色々と凄かったですね。食玩のプライヤーズも、わざわざレジンに置換して改造したりしてましたし。
でも、超竜神と撃龍神のDX玩具は最後までお呼びでなかったようで…。

ビッグボルフォッグだけ玩具のクオリティが数世代前って感じ。眠ってたデザインを使いまわしたのかね
電飾ギミックを組み込む制約で、劇中とは似ても似つかない姿になってしまったのよ。
要素欲張りすぎてプロポーションが破綻したのだとしても、他のメカと違ってボルフォッグのデザインラインだけ2〜3年古い感じがあるんすよね。
ガイガー、氷竜炎竜、マイクみたいな同時期のビーストウォーズからの技術フィードバックがほとんどない。
サンライズ主導で全メカデザインをディレクションするというこれまでと違う体制は限界もあったから、ボルフォッグだけはタカラ側の没案から引っ張り出されたのでは？と妄想してます。

何故に新幹線だけ無駄にリアルなのか
タカラによると「新幹線やスーパーカーは子供も特徴をよく見ているから、デザインに嘘はつけない」とのことです。
逆にクレーン車やダンプカー等のいわゆる働く車は、色や装備などの記号的要素さえ押さえておけば車種などは適当で構わないそうで、氷竜・炎竜・風龍・雷龍のベースになる車体が同じデザインなのはそこに由来するようです。
