  • The UK's coldest December in 100 years: December 2010. December 2010 was the coldest December in 100 years for the UK. During December 2010, the UK experienced two spells of severe winter weather. There were very low temperatures and significant snowfalls across the country.
For much of December, the wind came from an E to NE direction. This brought very cold air from northern Europe and Siberia. As the very cold air stagnated over snow-covered ground, it became colder and colder.
On 2 December 2010, almost all of the UK was covered by lying snow. The deepest snow was in Scotland and NE England, with over half a metre in places. South east England had snow as deep as 26cm at Charlwood in Surrey. There was even snow lying at Land’s End in Cornwall.

Falling off my bike on black ice wasn't great but I had the happiest Christmas of my life that year between the snow on the ground and precious time with my boyfriend who passed away only three weeks later due to a major heart condition.

That is such a sad comment I'm really sorry for your loss, the snow at Christmas time and being in love must have made for magical, enchanted like memories, just like the movies, there's something about the snow on the ground, while you're indoors curled up in a blanket with a loved one, sipping on hot chocolate that's just so romantic, this must be an incredibly difficult time of year for you each time it rolls around, try to replace any sad thoughts with your cherished memories of this time you had together, god bless

I remember the “real feel” being significant and unusually cold. The prolonged period of cold was also the major difference to what I’d experienced in the past. It also seemed to stay bitterly cold throughout the day with even midday/afternoons having a biting feel. It basically resembled an Eastern European winter. That was my experience being in Bedfordshire.

I was driving an Artic on Night shift. For many nights in December-February 2010 as I was bound towards North Wales on the M56 around 3-4 in the morning, I encountered a temperature of -18 -20c in the area between J12(Runcorn) to the Chester turn off nearby Stanlow refinery. Rime Ice formed on the whole front of the tractor unit and mirrors, creating impressive contours and shapes sculpted by the conditions of freezing temperature and slipstream.

This winter is nostalgic to me, i live in shetland that gets little snow and its one of the only 3 years i got a snow man in 13 years, im 13 now and wish i still got winters like 09-10 and 10-11. This winter was noted for the snow in north east scotland and shetland is in the north east extreme so that explains it. Thank you so much for making this and allowing me to see more about this winter.

I live in NE England and the 1st cold spell from 26th Nov until 10th Dec was very snowy. Constant heavy snow showers off the North Sea. I Saw thunder snow for the first time and we had a level depth of snow of around 40cm. The second spell from Dec 16th until around the 27th was less snowy but very cold.
The winter before was a cold one too with cold spells throughout from Dec 09 to April 10.
We had a particularly snowy period in early Jan 10 where the depths were around 30cm of level snow.
The 09/10 winter was better as a whole for cold and snow but 10/11 had that one truly exceptional month.

I remember working as a gas engineer. Newly qualified and only 19, I worked for the council and no word of a lie I had on average 70-80 properties a day where the condensate pipe from the boilers had frozen up and stopped the boilers working. One large kettle full later and hey presto, reset boiler and off to the next one. I worked 25 days throughout December 2009 and I earned an absolute fortune. The next December was similar but not as harsh. Working 14-16 hour days for £600-£700 a day was brilliant! :-) miss those days.

Fields were completely covered throughout that period
No-one locally has seen that before even the oldest
It may have lasted longer in 47 or 63 but there were breaks in snow cover
All of the snow came from heavy showers blown in off the Irish sea,max depth here was 19 inches on Xmas week

It all started the back end of November. Loads of snow, relentless day after day. My 2 lads played in the snow every day. Had the time of their lives. It felt as though we were in a very cold European country, very unlike England. There was a small thaw a week into December and it all started again. With a week to go to Christmas we knew we were guaranteed a white Christmas. There were 2 foot long icicles hanging from gutters. It was the greatest Christmas of all time.

I remember this as being two cold spells with a milder interlude. The snow in Horsham fell at the end of November, the usual inch, then more snow fell in early December, up to about six inches on the grass. This was followed by quite a rapid thaw and some rain which melted the snow. The cold soon returned with further snow which stzuck on the ground until just after Christmas. Milder air came in after Boxing day thawing the snow and that was the end of the severe cold.

Here on the Somerset Levels trying to soak my willow in a tank of frozen water, it wouldn't penetrate the willow very well to soften it as so cold and icy, trying to construct wicker baskets and coffins with ice cold willow was no fun. But boy it was a great Dec we hit - 12°c at night and - 6 tops on Christmas Day had 9-10" inches of snow in two falls, not able to get out of the road I live in let alone the village. In terms of snow fall only March 2018 comes close this century. Far better than the winters of 12/13-13/14 when it was very mild, stormy, wet and floods/roads shut for over 3 months. Let's have some more.

I worked on a retail park and the snow was cleared but left in piles at various points around the site! I remember the last pile of snow finally melting in March the following year! I do believe that global warming was re named climate change after 2010!

I've read that it wasn't so much the amount of snowfall, that it was when it started to thaw the real problems began, the temperatures began to dip again freezing the slush and water from the snow, turning the ground into an ice rink before it had a chance to go anywhere, then it didn't get above freezing for some considerable amount of time and the ice remained, only light flurries of snow fell after but it made for some very dangerous conditions, a lot of elderly and sick people died that year as a result

Living in a house without central heating was sheer hell. I had thick ice on the inside of the double glazed windows in my bedroom for about a week and woke to temperatures of about 3 or 4C. I never want to go through that again.

It was really bad i used to live in a Mobile park home in a village called Whelpley Hill in Chesham it was a lovely place to live but expensive and i did not have the money for the Oil heating that winter as it was £1500 each time to fill the tank , anyway so cold it got that my toilet literally froze indoors lol , luckily i had an electric heater so that saved my life or i would have froze as it was minus 21 degrees centigrade very scary winter

Agree! It started off unusually cold (even for January), and ended with the coldest December for over 100 years. Indeed winters' 09/10 and 10/11 remain the two coldest winters overall in the 21st century for the UK. This despite the 'Beast from the East' in Feb and March 2018. 17/18 winter wasn't as cold overall as the other two winters mentioned.

We had it the winter before too! 09/10 was the coldest winter in 31 years. The winter of 08/09 was very cold too especially in February. The in 2012/13 January was very snowy and March was the coldest since 1883.

It was very cold but dec 1981 was colder -20c in the west mids at night.... maybe -8 to -5 in the day and as in 2010 it ended just after xmas. then returned in jan in 82 most of you dont know this but the weather pattern tried to repeat it's self in jan 11 it failed other wise jan 11 would have been as cold.
