The steel wool burns because of the iron in it. Iron is reactive with oxygen in the air (that's what rusting is). However, when you divide up iron into very small pieces (like in steel wool), the reaction occurs much more quickly and releases more heat (in the form of fire). This reaction needs energy to start it, and you could just light it with a match, but the energy in a battery is also enough to start this reaction.

Well the iron conducts the electricity and the energy in the electricity causes the iron to burn (or in other words react with oxygen). Steel wool also contains carbon, which is also flammable, so that definitely contributes to the fire as well.

take a pencil, remove the eraser, put a few match head in place of the eraser, pinch the metal shut around the match heads, heat it up with a lighter and it will shoot the metal piece off about 30 feet. really cool and could possibly put someones eye out!

Except every time a new one comes out they make fun of how useless the hacks are. But what really makes me laugh is they're making fun of him for not putting effort into his videos. I think for the steel wool what happens is that since steel wool is made up of soft steel, and soft steel is a conductor of electricity. The battery electrons get transferred onto the actual steel wool and makes these little electric currents that can set on fire at any time.
Close -- what happens is the electricity runs through it so fast that it creates heat and the heat sets the cotton balls on fire. But you were very close, and it was a nice guess

It's only because you're shorting the current by touching it to the steel wool, creating heat. I never thought it would be so hard to figure out for some people.
You're right that the steel wool completes the circuit when the battery touches, creating a current and heat in the steel wool. However, no substantial current is passing through the steel after the battery is removed. The heat he used to ignite the cotton balls actually comes from the iron in the steel wool burning.
Steel is made primarily of iron which oxidizes in the presence of lots of oxygen if heated to a high enough temperature. The steel wool has an incredible amount of surface area and low mass, meaning that the iron atoms in the thin filaments are exposed to lots of oxygen and that the heat cannot dissipate into adjacent atoms very quickly since there isn't a lot of material to dissipate into. The result - the current from the battery causes the iron at the point of contact to heat up so much that it oxidizes very quickly, releasing even more heat that then oxidizes the surrounding atoms and so on down each filament.
There is no such thing as current moving through the steel very fast, it moves through all materials with the same speed, speed of light. The steel wool heats up because it is very thin and offer high resistance to the current, as the resistance is reversely proportional to the diameter of the conductor. Also it heats up because again being thin, it does not dissipate heat well because of poor heat conduction in this case as air is a poor heat conductor and the mass of steel directly in contact with the heat source is very small. As the previous commenter has mentioned, the structure of the material offer high surface area for contact with oxygen in the air. So you have it, high temperature plus oxygen equals fire.
