  • A gang of crows pick on an old dog in Waterlow Park (in Highgate, London). Interesting to watch through as the crows seem to develop a strategy, but what for? Checky was only carrying 20p and an old comb.

Crows just get bored and check stuff out. But yes, they actually do develop team based strategies and work together to do things. They're very social animals, ridiculously smart.

    • @alexc5243

They're very smart and I have no doubt that they saw it as a potential source of food. If they see an animal that's is weak and is getting close to dying from age (or anything, really), they'll stalk it and wait for it to die.

    • @metafis2490
      @metafis2490 8 лет назад +11

If that was true, they'd wait further away from it till it died(crows only eat carrion of larger animals),....they might be trying to shoo it out of the area(possibly their young nearbye).

i think they smell death wandering around the dog. when i watched that dog, i realize, that dog is very old and on 100% not healthy. i have many times seen crows testing a health of some weak or bad looking animals. in a Czech expression could "crow" mean something like burial employee. someone who put deaths under ground or eliminate them other ways.

Crows eat anything edible, including humans (hence their latin name "corvus corone" - carrion raven), and they show no mercy to anything weak, ever. A flock of them may kill newborn fawns or even calves. In the video, they were "playing", but they were also testing the dog's resistance to their taunting, and if the dog had been too weak, they would have attacked it in earnest.

I didn't know crows lived that long. They are scared of me, and I don't know why. i have never let anyone bother them. I have a 5 gallon feeder with cracked corn and sunflower seed, I also put out suitable food scraps. They love fish scraps. The raccoons get the scraps overnight, so I put out food scraps early in the morning, then sit and have my coffee, and watch them through tinted glass doors.

Both parties seem to be having fun. The crows aren't pulling the dog's tail hard enough to hurt it, and the dog is only startling the crows, not chasing them off. It's great seeing how these very different animals interact; a dog turning its back to another means that it intends no harm (possibly using it to "fake out" the crows in this context), and the crows take advantage of that to sneak around the dog, both sides keeping up the game.

  • @WolfFireheart

By the fact that they didn't fly away after the dogs first playful bounce towards them shows that they did not see the dog as much of a threat.

Sorry to say, yes. Crows have enormous brains, compared to most birds, and they use them to suss out situations and figure out what to do. When they see an animal that seems weak, they try to figure out if it's about to die and if so be there when it happens, as well as see if they can't safely figure out a way to hurry the process along or even kill it.
They can see this dog isn't able to move properly, so that's what'they're doing here. If the dog suddenly started running around in a healthy-looking way, they'd find something better to do.

the crows are not trying to kill or attack tye dog, the show no signs of aggression. crows are known to do stuff like this to all types of animals, but mostly other birds.
they simply enjoy fucking around and picking on other animals.
its not so much that they are playing with the animal, but using the animal to be played around with.

They're seeing if he's ripe. They like their meat well-done.

Crows seem to like tails. I've seen numerous videos of crows taking nips at them.

I love how you can literally hear other crows laughing in the distance when he pulls his tail. 😂😂

Richard- When I was young my uncle had a house on the top of a big hill he owned where he would plant corn below in 2 maybe 25 yd by 40 yd boxes. Standing on the bottom side of the corn I would call Kelly his Irish setter. She would leap off the deck and race down the hill. You could see the corn shake as she blasted through - catch a glimpse - into the next box and more shaken corn then she was there. The only thing that dog had more of then energy was love.

Cool video. The crows are just playing. They like to tease animals with the tail game. :)

Hit and run tactics! First tire it then close in for the kill.

Crows do this to just about every animal.... gosh people! 😕
NO- they were not trying to kill the dog. They were trying to get the dog out of their area. I've watched them pull Bald Eagle feathers to try to steal the eagle's fish! I've seen them pull horse tails, cat tails, etc. If you watch more crow videos, you will see they tend to go after tails!!!! Somewhere along the line, they realized it annoys animals and it's an easy way to get a large animal away if they want to shoo it..... so they do this a lot!

They saw a certain Hitchcock movie and got all psyched up, and now they're practicing.

Ah, bless, I think they were all playing, the dog was wagging his tail, I think he was letting them play. I'm trying to befriend the crows in the park across the road from my house, I had about 15 surround me the other day, they have so much character. I am trying to get them in my garden too, but I worry what the neighbours think, when I hold a slice of bread in the air and shout "CROW! - Oi CROW! - I'VE GOT BREAD! AND ALSO PEANUTS!!!" (it works in the park!) :D

I befriended a crow, I named it Poe after the author of the poem The Raven, Edgar Allen Poe. Poe and I have become friends, despite me being a human and Poe being a crow, but I say good morning to them , and Poe responds, I think Poe will tell their fellow crows that I’m a interesting person to know, and maybe they’ll give me shiny things, I like shiny things. I prefer crows over people any day, because crows are not as awful as people are. I want a pet crow. I think I found my spirit animal, a crow, and crows are my familiar, I’m kind of a witch, and I have a deep fascination with crows.

That's a poor old dog. You can tell by the way he walks. The crows aren't afraid of him at all.
