phly please can you make a video on the phantom FGR.2 (British phantom) it would be much appreciated
I’ve discovered something with this type of shell. They’ve also added it to the vfw, so I was able to do some testing. If you set the fuse at a distance further than the target you are aiming at, and then manage to hit the target, the fuse of the shell will still go off when it hits the target. That’s what you need to do.
What a useless mechanic

Why the hell did he have to measure the range so long? Did they change it already? Must have been in the new update because I only have to tap the range and it's adjust in 0.01 seconds. Also they still don't have a way to dial the range? That's f*ckin' gay. I hate lasing the plane, I could only kill 2 planes and it took 40 shells, they need to add 1 of or all 3 options: 1. manually adjust the fuse 2. match the fuse to your gun range 3. match range to your selected target. Any one of those is better than the laser hell that it is now.

Hey, ply! You are missing an awesome way of using the fuse mechanic to get targets behind cover!
First, rangefind the distance to target behind cover by measuring the range to something beside or just in front of the target. Then aim and fire above the target. When the fuse ignites above the target shrapnel will hail down in the very thin upper plates! Test it!!
1995error Oh that is nastyyy... it’s one thing to get 1 shot from across the map by the flakbus, it’s another to get 1 shot from across the map by a flakbus while you’re behind cover
This is why we can't have nice things

Came here to confirm. The cheese is real
@@davecrupel2817 how’d it go?
This ammo was suppose to intercept allies bombers flying on leveled flight in straight line. Not fighters and ground support aircrafts.
But yes it would be nice if you could use some buttons to manually set fuse.
Dysputant just because it was meant to fire at bombers does not mean it can’t be used for close anti aircraft support. Plus IRL the 88 anti aircraft systems worked in battery’s directed by a battalion level firing computer to intercept targets, usually linked to a radar so they had the exact speed and altitude without need for “eyeballing”. Yet in this we can’t even manually set in parameters we have to range the target, which I might add is not the altitude of the target so as they are moving towards you your round will go a higher altitude than the target and vice versa for a target going away.
All in all this is a poorly executed system that could have been so much better.
@@MrCoolguy425 no the didn't
@Adventure Inc i dont know the numbers but yt historians usually give statistics like tens of thousands of shells for 1 single bomber
@@loc1123 The point wasn't to have a high kill ratio. The point was to harass the bombers and force them to fly at high altitude and constantly change course and altitude. It made bombing much less accurate.
@@loc1123 Thousands of shells for a bomber are statistics we see on both sides, even with VT fuses. Considering the usage of area denial tactics, it's actually respectable, since a lot of the time flak was used in this role.
This mechanic has already been in the game once, and it was so much easier to use. You could set the fuse by using the sight elevation adjustment.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that tested on the Russian flak truck?
@@dagreenbolt9169
Yes
@@dagreenbolt9169 Yes, way back when they first tested this. There was a slight issue though. The fuse did the job and detonated the shell at the set range (same as this, set with the rangefinder), but the shell ignored hitting the vehicles and other objects. You could set it at the range, drive a little bit forward, and the HE shell would ignore the tanks armor and detonate inside a vehicle. You could kill a Maus with a 76mm HE by having it ignore all of the armor and detonate inside it.
It was only on the dev server at the time I believe and was quickly removed.

What
There are a few ways they could fix/improve it:
1) In Arcade, it automatically adjusts to the plane’s altitude and distance, with no user input. Simply aim and fire.
2) In Realistic, it’s adjusted by increments of 50 meters, either by hand or by the rangefinder. If the latter, the rangefinder will range find within 1 second, if the fuse shell is chosen.
3) In Simulator, it is as painful as it is now, albeit with the shells being user adjustable, rather than relying purely on the rangefinder.
hmm
Should be kind of like adjusting the height on your scope in my opinion, bind it to a button then as you said add or subtract 50 meters. It won't be OP as there's still some difficulty knowing the right distance of the plane
use a similar system like what is used in naval realistic battles for #2. that said I do like the one second ranging for the timer, could set it up in the crew skills as another stupidly downgraded stat that takes six months or $50 to max out
im saying this as a console player, where you gotta mutate a 3rd hand just to play but i can imagine the scroll wheel on a mouse would be the simplest option for this ya know what i mean?
This I approve.
Aim at a point on the ground, then guestimate when an airplane passes that range... that's about the only way around it.

Could also use it to hit tanks over hills somehow,

Just a tiny thing about the Range-finder: You do not need to keep it on Target it always measures the distance at the point you started to measure. Maybe instead of removing it, they should make it to where, when you range-find, it instantly finds the range for you to shoot at.
Even coding it into the game would be easy as hell...
Dude you'll never be hired in WT dev's team cause you're not stupid enough ^^'.
they should make it that when you look at the plane with the sight, it has a bigger box for the range measure to measure it, and also that it calculates the speed of the plane so when you range it at like 1000 meters, it takes into account it's speed so instead of measuring at 1000, it measures it at let's say 800-700 meters away by taking into account it's speed.
Or just add a damn control where you can manually set the fuze
This happens on Xbox you just click the left stick and the fuse is set
Because that is auto-sniper10.exe
You need to consider targets speed and direction.

Medium and Heavy Flak guns aren't really designed for engaging ground attack and fighters strafing. They're built specifically for what you mentioned, taking shots at medium and high altitude bombers. But having something like a page up and down or something similar to quickly increase in increments of 25-100 would be much more efficient. And holding another key to bump it to a high increment change.
Here is how the mechanic should be, when aiming at or near an aircraft, fuse should be automatically adjusted and skill of that adjustment should be a crew feature that you can upgrade. So maybe when you target an aircraft it will just be auto with an estimate based on skill with a randomization percentage depending on crew skill
Just played it and I noticed when you target an aircraft so there is a border around it, then measure range it gives you accurate range, the key is to target it, not keep the crosshair on it, but just bind a key so you can target .

December 1943, Unteroffizier (Corporal) Kramer belonged to the crew of panzer ace Otto Carius. Following the Axis retreat from Smolensk, Schwere Panzer-Abteilung 502(“Heavy Tank Battalion 502”), a Tiger unit, was stationed in north-east Belarus, on the Vitebsk-Nevel Road.
Kramer apparently became irritated at the sight of Soviet aircraft streaming overhead, at low levels and decided to elevate his 8.8 cm (“88”) gun at them. While the 88 had originated as a flak gun, panzer crews were seldom equipped with AA ammunition - this meant that Kramer could down an aircraft only with a direct hit. With Carius assisting his aim, Kramer fired at least two shells. The second apparently hit a fighter-bomber on its wing, causing it to crash.

1:45 variable time fuze =/= proximity fuze. A variable time fuze simply had a dial at the fuze which you can set to a specific time (hence "variable time"). This set timer combined with the velocity of the shell (constant) and the angle of fire (variable and measurable) one can determine at what altitude the shell bursts. However, one also has to somewhat accurately determine the altitude and distance to the target for it to be truly effective, which was notoriously difficult. A proximity fuze "simply" has a small radio transmitter that detects the target and sets off the shell at a predetermined distance
Variable timed flak shells were meant to be used against bomber formations, the reason is because the bombers usually stayed at a certain altitude while making a bombing run.
That gun was originally made for shotting down heavy planes like big bombers, for that is a Flak, not a Pak cannon
Phly demonstrated that either way you still can't get an accurate range on a bomber, and if you do, it has come closer or farther away by the time you fire

The rangefinder does not require you to maintain the position of your cross hair. The moment you press the bind, it "has the position" it just delays giving the information. Its this exact reason why there’s more then 1 crewman in a tank. The Aimer wouldn’t be rangefinding, tracking and firing at the same time (or shooting at a fighter for that matter but that’s none of my business) a good commander would be shouting the range every few seconds to help the gunner predict when to shoot. It would be more realistic to have a auto looping Rangefinder.
This wasn’t a dynamic weapons platform . Generally they would all be facing one anticipated enemy plane direction to all fire in unison without having to move the barrel too much. It was meant to be relatively stationary. They would be positioned in areas where the enemy would confirmed be traveling through

Incorrect - German Flak had timed fuses, either through visual or radar targeting the height was estimated and used to set the timer - not the altitude.
The US managed to introduce proximity fusing which is a whole different ball game - much more effective than a timed fuse.
Proximal fusing greatly enhanced allied AAA effectiveness, this helped reduce the impact of both V1s over Britain and Kamikazes over the Pacific.
The Germans were forced to use timed fuses, either aimed or as barrage fire (you aim at a part of the sky, not an airplane nor formation, hoping that by having enough gun saturation you end up hitting something, or at least reducing bombing effectiveness by disturbing the final approach or forcing the formation to fly at higher altitudes.
Also in the AA role an 8.8cm would generally be firing as a battery.
For a game like War Thunder the time fusing should be automatic based on sighting (to model optical targeting, including height). This would still make it difficult, because you don’t have a proximity fuse, but a well aimed shot should be on the predicted course.
Having to preset altitude is unnecessarily difficult compared to the general simplicity of War Thunder mechanics.
the flak was used to shoot down planes but the also used to be artillery and anti tank in the anti air shell are small balls so when it explodes in mid air it hits the plane

First, to Phly, according to all my ridiculous attempts to learn sight ranging by ranging a ridiculous amount of stuff, it appears that whatever your crosshair was on as you pushed the button is the range it will give you, the green bar is simply to raise your level of frustration. It already has the range the instant you ask for it, it just makes you wait. SO... Make sure your crosshair is exactly on the plane when you click and you should get it every time as long as the plane is less than 2500 meters away. I don't think you can sight more than that due to draw distance limits etc... Second, the best way for them to implement this mechanic would be to allow us to bind the range adjustment to the scroll wheel so we can set the fuse where we "believe" he will be. after that it's just a matter of wasting copious amounts of ammo until you get good at it.

Are you starting to become a fan of undertale music?
Hey phly, the best way to utilize the shell is to find a point on the ground and range that. Once the plane nears that range then you fire the gun, this is similar to how the shell originally worked. It is clunky but it's not meant for actively tracking moving targets.
I want to cry, that first Clip is so wholesome
@17:03 "What do they want us to do with it"? Shoot the shell overhead of tanks behind cover, the shell will burst overhead and kill opentops and lights.
Are you aware this system has been in the game for two years already on the 29-K? It's only news now, now the 88 gets it. Love the unloved 29-K!
The fact that they aren't sensible enough to implement something like the simple ranging found in Post Scriptum - hold button, scroll mouse wheel - says everything about Gajin. I'm certain at this point that the positives of War Thunder's control system were stumbled upon through sheer accident.
Ideally there would be one button for large changes of range (say 500m increments) and then one for fine adjustments (say 25 or 50m increments).
Phly it’s a delicate balance between historical accuracy and gameplay, the players are never going to employ historically accurate strategies and so historically accurate vehicles can feel clunky at times
It's funny to see flak actually being flak in war thunder
