My ability to make custom characters is very limited. I am trying to find an artist (and animator, depending on the circumstances) to help me with the sprites, but so far I have no luck on this search.

Nah, the artist just draws them and then the animator just animates them. Then I receive them in the form of a spritesheet and go from there.
