  • Do Great Pyrenees make good family pets? Are Great Pyrenees good indoor dogs? Are Great Pyrenees gentle with children? These are questions we get when finding new forever homes for our puppies. While the Great Pyrenees dog is bred to be an outdoor, livestock guardian dog, it definitely has many amazing qualities that make it an excellent family pet. There are some challenges when training the Great Pyrenees to be an indoor / family pet, most of the challenges are not unique to the Great Pyrenees breed. Given a committed, patient and loving owner, the Great Pyrenees can be the most loyal and loving family pet.

We have a Great Pyrenees as an indoor dog. She is wonderful. She is very calm, cool and collective! She doesn't bark a whole lot. She can even hear dogs outside barking and she doesn't bark. The problem she has is she doesn't want to come back in! She has a mind of her own, that's for sure! She is only 9 months old. She is a joy! 😊 This is our first Pyrenees. We usually have Chow Chows. We lost our last Chow Chow a year ago. She was 15. We are going to get another Chow Chow puppy when our breeder has a litter.

Your 9 month old Pyr has at least 11/2 years of puppy left to go be aware these giant breeds take much longer to mature physically and mentally. You’re approaching the most challenging time now as fear periods and hormones kick in . Never spay or neuter any dog (do your own research) but certainly not before 3 years old with a giant breed. Good luck

I had a labrahoula (labrador/catahoula mix) who was a total accident that made it just to 15 before she had to be put down, god I miss her. We now have a massive Great Pyrenees, and I think my labrohoula was actually stronger despite being like 60% of his size. She was definitely harder to control when she was young, this boy is a breeze so far.

Well, until an animal appears in your yard or the UPS guy pulls up. :) But seriously, I was dog sitting my son's dog and he has a small spazzy dog. After four days I was drained both physically and mentally. Pyrs are so protective but at the same time so laid back, so intelligent. My speed. And beware the booper and the Pyr paw. I raised GP for 20 years and the barking and shedding and digging can be trained out. My GP would bark to alert but stop the minute I used the quiet command. Brushing a few times a week will help with shedding. If you have a cool area outside that is for them to get cool it will stop the digging. Tons of toys will stop the puppy chewing of things you don’t want them to.

Our daughter has a Pyranees-Lab mix. The pup had a training collar to help her learn to control her barking in the house. Their other older dog figured out that he could bark when the youngster was being a pest and her collar would buzz at her (NOT a shock type). Old guy used that to reduce her peskiness directed at him. The pup would run to "mom" with a face that said, "No fair!" She learned the older dog set limits, though.

Hi I'm from AZ, Getting a second GP, This time a female pup. I was so lucky to get my first GP because My wife passed away almost two years ago and Angel was a rescue I got about a 1 1/2 years ago. She has been a Godsend for me. I've had big dogs all my life but never a GP. Because of the pandemic I had to go through the Humane Society on line for the adoption and then go about 40 miles to meet the dog which other than big and white and about 3 yrs. old was all the info I got. I didn't know the breed. Of course I took her, such a great girl! Her and I are getting through the pandemic together, I'm 68 and have no children. She is an indoor/outdoor dog mostly due to the extreme heat here in Phx, I have a big back yard and she can come and go as she likes.
I really love all your videos. I'm envious of your farm lifestyle and wish I had a beautiful family like yours! Oh, BTW way I've always loved Texas! Spent a lot of time there eons ago! I wish the best for your family.

brushing them 3-5 minutes a day really helps cut down on the loose fur inside the house... but yes, at minimum, get a slicker and a de-shedding rake. You'll still be vacuuming daily regardless. The more you brush them, the softer they get. They'll still dig INSIDE too... mine tries to dig a hole in the carpet every day/night. Also... when they're teething as pups... anything wood is fair game... furniture, baseboards, etc. try rolling up damp washcloths & throwing it in the freezer... makes a good, easy chew toy. But yea... the barking... especially at night... is one of their less attractive qualities...

The Pyrenees behaviour are certainly dominant. Excellent outside guardians and also happy indoors at night. We bring them in at night now because of a nasty encounter with a wolf pack some years ago. • @WillowRidgeAcres
      @WillowRidgeAcres  2 года назад +1

@@rjay7019 Yes, it's best to keep their hair long as they have a self-cleaning double coat. And their skin is pretty fair so if you trim their coat they tend to get sun burnt. Brushing their coat a couple times a week helps them to shed the undercoat and keep them from getting matted up. We get sticker burrs pretty bad here in seasons. It seems the burrs stick to the wooly undercoat more than their coarse overcoat. So keeping them brushed helps keep that under control. Hope that helps!

You are absolutely spot on these dogs have been bred for thousands of years to do one specific job - follow and guard a flock of sheep through the mountains. We living in Florida in a suburb with our Pyr for 7 years now have successfully compensated by long walks, taking him everywhere with us and (his favorite) sitting in the yard with him as he surveys the neighborhood making sure everything is alright. Also allow him to make a lot of his own decisions. He’s not a GSD or a lab.

Were in our early 70's and our our grown grandaughter is a dog groomer. One day someone just left a great Pyrenees and didn't come back. The dog was only 40lbs and very sick. She lives in town and has 2 kids and a dog. So since our last died we weren't going to have any more, it's so hard when they die. We called it quits after 9 dogs. Surprise... She bring the dog to us, knowing we couldn't say no. It took 4 vets to figure out why she was sick. We live outside city limits, no reason to fence, right. NO!! We're to old to chase a dog. We've had our kids, grandkids and now greatgrans, no fence. Now we have a fence for Gost, our big girl. She wants to wonder and we can't go after her. She is an indoor and outdoor dog. She weights 180lbs. She shears ALOT, vacuuming 2×daily. Thank goodness our grandaughter is a groomer. We had to get a strong ramp to get her in the back of her SUV, and on the table. She digs holes, barks, and loves everyone. She likes to be outside in the snow alot and wants to stay out at night. We have coyotes out here we can hear them. I'm afraid to let her stay out all night. When grandaughter go's to work she drops of kids and her dog with us. Now she has a playmate. We love her to death, I can't imagine life without her. We live in northeast Kansas and have all seasons, but in the summer she has learned how to climb the ladder and get in the pool. Kids love that to. She's an angel without wings. So yes she's a great family dog, indoors and out. Have a great time with your dogs, there the best!!

I'll add to the Great Pyrenees as house pets info. Puppies that are farm/outside raised are wonderful, but take more time to adapt to indoor living than puppies raised in a house. My oldest dog was from a farm, and while she's fabulous, but it took her several months to get used to being indoors. My two newest additions are 12 weeks old and were raised in a house from birth. They already understand most of the sights and sounds of living in a house before they even made it my home. It's not a huge challenge, but something to be aware of when finding forever homes for puppies.

  • @jflsdknf

Their personalities are perfect but their instincts are strong and they 100% need some kind of land to guard/patrol/mark, even if it's just a fenced backyard. Otherwise they can get depressed if they are cooped up inside all day. Mine were fine indoors the first few years of life but after they matured it was obvious they needed a job. They were never interested in "typical" dogs things to curb boredom like interactive toys, etc. Even if you don't have livestock they just want to lay in the yard and watch over it, that is what they need to be able to do. Also, my male as he got older became obsessive about walks around the neighborhood wanting to mark, even though he has a large fenced backyard, and it caused behavioral issues with him holding his urine and poop for constant walks and becoming distressed all day. I really believe these dogs need a lot of land and to preferably live outside, it's what they seem to want.

They make great indoor pets! I've had three of them. They just need to be walked and exercised. Only one of mine had the barking disease and she barked at anything she would hear outside. The Great Pyrenees is the best dog breed I've ever owned. But they get VERY BIG, and not all of them take to children, especially if they are not raised with kids.

My dog was a herding dog he had like 1000 breeds in him but he got used to the indoors , a bit of more background is that he used to be a stray of the streets of Chicago. My moms friends dad took him on for a few years but then he passed so the dog was passed to my moms friend , then a years or 2 later he was passed to us. We named him Max and he got on the way of us “randomly” later when Max passed we found out he was a breeding dog so then he lived around 5-6 years will us. But then in November of 2020 7 days before thanksgiving he passed away while he was sleeping. I was depressed for a few days but I got over it now , I am still sad though . My point is that those farm breeding dogs can still be house dogs. R.I.P Max.

I wouldn’t be able to answer that from experience as we have only brought our females in to whelp their puppies for a week or so. But they did well for that time. I know of others that have Great Pyrenees as indoor only dogs and they do well.
I’ll have to check out the furminator brush. Thanks for the recommendation!

She will Chew on the walls if she doesn't have tennis balls to Play with ( Chew on) and can get bored easily. She's 6 years old now, along with my Golden Retriever and has gotten better. Make Sure you take them on Plenty of Walks. They Live for that and everybody will sleep better at night. Hope this helps.

Hello! I have a Great Pyr mix (he looks totally Pyr except that he has a black head which I've been told means he can't be a purebred Pyr). I have not yet been brave enough to try bathing him myself so I've been taking him to a groomer every few months. I don't mind paying for the groomer but if it's something I can do myself, i would definitely try! Judging by this video you guys do your own grooming. Would you be willing to do a video either bathing them or just of tips/things to know before attempting to bathe a Pyr?
Thank you so much and I love watching your videos!

Thank you for watching! Yes, we will be doing a “Pyr Spa Day” video soon where we show how we bathe them. Stay tuned!
