I cannot explain how much I loved "The Other Valley" even though I struggled with the first couple of chapters. My brain was on fire (in a good way) at the end. The atmosphere was well created and the details just came together beautifully at the end, in a hopeful but also sad way. Pay attention to Odille's hobby, I think it's the key that brings the whole novel together.
If you read it, I hope you enjoy it too.
Me too! It’s been my favourite book of 2024 so far. I found it really affecting and have thought about it nearly every day since finishing it.
Thank you so much for the shout out! ❤ Not sure my research was the best way to spend my time but it was fun 😂 I’ll still probably get them all wrong!
This would be a really interesting list. I’ve read and loved The Coast Road and Wild Houses, and very intrigued by This Other Valley. Got a proof of Blue Hour I’m hoping to read next month if I have time around Booker stuff.
Great vid as always! 👏
The Coast Road is well worth a read. Initially I was apprehensive about the male author, but wow, did he prove me wrong. So sad this book did not make it on the list.
So excited to read the new Sigrid Nunez book, I recently read her book What Are You Going Through and loved it - highly recommend it!
I’m listening to The Coast Road. It’s set in Donegal, just before the referendum on divorce.
Loved The God in the Woods, Long Island Compromise & The Coast Road
The Other Valley sounds amazing. I loved Ingrid Persad’s first novel so want to get to her new book once my book buying ban is over (September).
Amma by Saraid de Silva Kiwi author, story of 3 women same family from 1951 to 2018 - beautifully written & stays with you
I’d be bloody chuffed with this list! I finished Come and Get It this morning and just, ugh, chef’s kiss. God of the Woods has a big queue at the library but I’m in there! and very much looking forward to Long Island Compromise too, so very very drawn to that awesome cover ♥️
Unfortunately I'm behind on 2024 releases and so haven't read many eligible books. But I am close to finishing The Spoiled Heart by Sunjeev Sahota and low-key want it to win the prize. Besides Come and Get It, I would love to see Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar on the list. I know the Booker kind of ignores short story collections but Quickly, While They Still Have Horses by Jan Carson would be a fun choice. I can see The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride not only making the list but winning.
The Other Valley was on kindle for £1 (not sure if it still is) I thought it was ok.
My Friends was excellent. Praiseworthy was interesting but ultimately not for me. The God of the Woods which I read after your recommendation was great.
mercy can you help me, there was this novel set in a snowy place with the sea and dead whales washed up in shore, I think two daughters and family shifted to that place, I was reading and loving it but i lost that book, you perhaps recommended it three years ago. If you remember the name plz reply
@@666nemeesis hmm, the only book that comes to mind is The Island Child by Molly Aiken but it doesn't match your description entirely.
@@MercysBookishMusings thanks for your time, this one is not it, I guess ill have to let that book go, I think in your review you said there is a beautiful description about someone opening a coke or pepsi.
@666nemeesis hmmm I said that about a non fiction book Know My Name by Chanel Miller but it doesn't match your description.
