Oh nooooooo This Strange Eventful History was number 2 in my ranking. i ranked the longlist based on how interested i am in the books based on the synopsis etc and now I'm so sad! okay, got to check out your review. lol
You had me on such a rollercoaster placing James. 😂 I liked The Safekeep. It uses the form of a psychological thriller (kind of like Sarah Waters) to explore hefty themes relating to WWII and humanity. Will be interested to see your final thoughts! Enjoy Italy! And good luck with your shows.
Always love you feedback and commentary on books/book prizes and your visual competitions with yourself, the future predictions of ratings of the long list. Great stuff! Happy travels.
Hi, I found your channel when Ben Reads Good sampled your "It's Booker Season, Baby!" In his video 😄 Finished James yesterday. Enjoyed writing my Storygraph review this morning (pixie_d). I think I'll do Orbital on audiobook this month. It's been mentioned in prize videos so often my resistance has worn away. Not yet sure which others, but I love your method for prioritizing the list. Wish I knew how to do those nifty graphics. Cheers!
I'm also going to start singing a song when a book sounds like my cup of tea ☕😂. I'm reading Orbital right now and enjoying it, and loved Stoneyard Devotional. Looking forward to the rest of your reviews
I read JAMES when it first came out and thought it was clever, not great. I also predicted it would probably win the Booker prize so it is off to a good start. Presently I'm reading MY FRIENDS,which is beautiful. I hope to read more.📚
Gr8 vid! I suspect your rankings will change dramatically once you've read them all! I predicted 3 correctly (James, My Friends and Orbital) - my Goodreads Listopia didn't help much there! I haven't read any yet, but have copies of all but the Powers. I'll read all 13 (for the 11th year in a row!), but since I DID snag an ARC of the Kushner, am starting there. As a retired Uni. Professor of Theatre, curious what play you are doing with your troupe? And kudos for working with the tykes! Enjoy the vacay to Italy - envious! And will look forward to whatever vids you can crank out regardless ... Cheers!
It appears we have books and theatre in common. I teach Acting and devised performance at a university in the south of England. the performance we are doing with the ten years olds is completely created by them. We structure and refine their ideas. We normally do it with nine year olds. Here's a trailer if you're interested to know more - ruclips.net/video/__QZ13skyRQ/видео.htmlsi=IuAV-jgPG2C1xCBU Happy Booker reading, be sure to let me know your top hitters!
Great stuff- this is the way we all view the list if we're being honest. Btw to be blunt, There There was absolutely messy and mediocre imo but it was colossally elevated in people's appraisal simply by being written by a Native American. It is great when books give us windows into cultures that are new to us and all that but we should still be able to keep our critical hats on as to whether it was poorly put together etc. It's been a while though so he might be a lot better now
I'm definitely up for a long video with mini-reviews. I'm going to read like 20% of each long-listed book and do a video that way. If I find something I like I'll read the whole thing. The booker is not my jam, but I do watch a lot of booktubers who read it, so I want to have an idea of what they're talking about.
It’s always interesting to see how our judgement shifts throughout the longlist process. The best kinds of books are the ones that surprise us so I hope we have a few of those 🤞Great to see your first impressions Andy. One I am most excited by is probably Charlotte Wood’s one( I read & loved The Weekend by her) and least excited for is Richard Powers just because his writing isn’t for me!!
I have The Safekeep, Wild Houses and My Friends on my TBR so I guess those are probably the books I’m most looking forward to reading. From this list, James is the only book I’ve read but I’m half way through Held at the moment. I’m loving the writing but not loving the story yet. It’s a short read so I’ll stick with it and maybe I’ll change my mind. I definitely recommend reading over listening to this one. It’s written almost in a stanza like format? I don’t know how to describe it, but I do know I’m happy I’m reading the book and not listening to it Enjoy your time away and happy reading!
I'm with Bob, I'm gutted that Praiseworthy isn't on the list. It's just won The 2024 Miles Franklin and it's now won 2024 The Stella Prize in the same year. It's the first novel to ever do that. Stoneyard Devotion is good but it's not even Charlotte Wood's best book, it only made the 2024 Miles Franklin longlist. We have so many great books written in Australia and it's sad that this was the one chosen. I really think that if Praiseworthy was listed then it would have won, it's better than the 4 on the longlist that I have read and that's including James.
Dude! You can’t do a tier list with novels you haven’t read! But I get it, you - like many - are trying to pick the 2-3 books you’re going to have time to read before bookermageddon. Love the channel!
The best book I’ve read so far on the longlist is My Friends by Hisham Matar. RE: Is JAMES excellent or outstanding? My test is simply this: Does it pass “THE STONER TEST? Meaning is it of the same quality of John Williams’ Stoner. If not, then it is not outstanding. Maybe excellent, but not outstanding. For me, it does not pass the Stoner Test.
I will happily accept 3 pints 🍺🍺🍺
Enjoy your time away mate!

James was outstanding! For me it's the one to beat. The committee really went hard on the meditation this year.

I'm enjoying all of the loonglist reactions. Thank you for adding your voice to the chorus.
Break a leg with all your shows and travels! I genuinely look forward to a long rambling Booker video at some point 😁
I'm also looking forward to the Kushner! Favourite that I've read so far is Playground

My fave reaction vid so far 😂 the play with 10 year olds sounds brilliant
Very excited for Held as I just loved Fugitive Pieces
It's booker season baby!
Fantastic video - I love watching your awards content!
Oh I loved there there, so glad for see wandering stars. Wild houses sounds great, I think
It's the most wonderful time of the year.

Justice for Praiseworthy!
I love the idea of just picking it at random- I think that would have done better than my choices too 😂
My Friends is the only one that interests me.

I literally said this to my partner this morning while I was frantically ordering books, “It’s Booker season baby”
YES!!
Wild Houses...is very good
