Hey Hayley, I’ve been using a tube magnet for a while and I have my water tube looped under my arm (pit) and attached to the chest strap. Having it lower seems to keep it away from getting snagged while moving my arms around. BUT one caveat for anyone navigating: the magnet is powerful and can easily derange a compass…so best to keep them well-separated while taking bearings.
That whole trip I never thought to move it under my arm or even to the chest strap haha. I blame the rain reducing my number of engineering stops 😜 You make a very good point about the compass!
About the bladder magnet. Back when i was in the army i used to feed the tube under my right arm when rucking. This way it was never in the way of anything else. With a rifle sling, radio mic wires x 2, and the rucksack over the vest i allways found I had to use my arms a lot and real estate was premium. The camelbak 3l bladders i have used since 2007 have plenty long enough tubes for me at least.
About two years ago, I wanted to upgrade to a new tent. I wanted to buy one of the Dan Durston tents, after you recommended them, but they were perpetually unavailable. So I purchased the Marmot Tungsten 1-person tent. I'm very happy with it. It's worked great for me. It's quick to setup and condensation does not build up inside it. It can be used freestanding without using the pegs (which is really nice in some areas).
I’m not sure how I got wind of the Durston tents, I remember just buying one easy breezy. Then there was like that 2 year period when it was so hard to get them haha. I am yet to meet my fate when I have to set the tent up on a platform or super soft ground so I’m sure you’d be laughing with your freestanding the day that comes haha :)
Thank you! Haha I was feeling the guilt from it being two months since my last long video! I am currently spending some time in Australia and back to New Zealand again in two weeks. I'm working on trying to get ahead and have some finished videos in the stash! I wish you a lovely weekend!! 😄
@@settohike You’re very welcome. You’re latest video was really enjoyable and that was definitely some absolutely beautiful scenery. Love your videos and thank you for sharing them Ms Hayley. Take care and hope you & yours have an amazing weekend as well🙏🏻☺️
A great cheap down jacket is the decathlon 100 down jacket. It's super warm and very light! 60 usd on occasional (fairly often) sales! I am on my second and love it as my warmest layer
I’ve recently just started to go hiking and have watched a lot of hiking RUclips videos ( I actually watch to much RUclips 😳) Haley your channel is by far my favourite ,your video editing is next level. Your content is amazing Loving it keep going this is what you are meant to be doing Thank you 👍
That pillow look so cool. I am jealous that you can sleep on something so slim. I have been searching for the thickest pillow I can find, that isn’t just a kilo of foam. I have gone as far as constructing a frankenpillow from a buff, dry bag, and two giant sponges.
Hahah the only downside is every hotel room i've ever stayed at has pillows the size of a planet. It sounds like you're slowly onto something with your pillow engineering. 😂
Just started using Ex Mid Pro... I love it...& The 21oz... And how quick it is to set Up!!! In case of high wind/rain...I do carry 4 extra long Zing-it lines with bolines at each end for fast connections at the top of each hiking pole tie-out and stake. To keep the tents ridline taught in high wind.. tie-out lines should Go out 8-10 ft. A short line simply pulls down on the ridge-line and will cause slack! In high winds... The longer the tie-out line the remarkably less tent flapping you will have. Mamma Gecko
Gear i am excited about: I just found an Eddie Bower 700 down vest at my local thrift store. I literally did a fist pump when I tried it on and it fit. Can't wait to give it a go on the trail!
Can't wait to take my xmid pro on a hike! It's such a clever design. Love the quilt too - an aussie made down quilt will be my next big purchase to reduce my hiking kit weight. oh, and that pillow is very cool!
Opposite pillow problem, no air pillow is thick enough. And air-pillows don't stack well, because they fall off each other. However, an air-pillow does stack reliably on the Zpacks version of that reversible stuff-sack.
Morning, love my neve gear quilt too, however I find the smell of the goose feathers rather fowl, 😂😂😂 it’s ment to subside offer a some time but after a couple a weeks of airing it out and several nights use it still quite strong. Did you have a similar experience?
My puffy is a Enlightened Equipment Torrid- very warm for its weight, insulates when wet as its synthetic, and fills my thermarest stuff sack pillow nicely. Neve quilts look nice- just bought a very similar( same colour even!) -6 degree quilt from Kiwi Ultralight here in NZ- I love my warm cocoon caterpillar!
Honestly, I don’t know how you YouTubing hikers do it! I expend so much energy just juggling hiking poles, snacks on trail, water bottles, and checking navigation on my IPhone app, that I can’t imagine dealing with a camera rig, too, and still enjoying the hike! Kudos to you!
Some of my friends have the hydration magnet. They have them attached to the chest strap. That may be more out of the way of your arms. I have spent years using clothes stuffed into my sleeping bag stuff sack as a pillow. My wife gave me a Nemo Filo Elite pillow as a gift. I've used it on one trip now and it is so much better than a jumper in a bag.
I like it to see content about ultralight hiking gear. But content from australia is new for me. Very interesting, thank you for that. Greetings from germany
Literally just upgraded my pack to a HMG 3400 Junction and my tent to the Durston X-Mid Pro 2. Deliveries expected by the end of the month. So excited. excited to hear about your journey with your quilt. Personally I love my One Planet sleeping bag, but am interested in the pro's and con's of quilt life. Great stuff Hayley, love your work :)
I would like to try the quilt thing too but I decided to save the $$ and just had my one planet sleeping bag refurbished by one planet. It is so plush! much cheaper than buying a new quilt/sleeping bag.
I’m a bit confused by the quilt… are you lying directly on the foam mat? No quilt underneath you? Isn’t that cold??! It would be so nice to be able to move your legs around though, which I can never do in a sleeping bag! 🤔
hi Hayley, As you were previously using the X-Mid tents, did you notice any difference on condensation between the regular and the pro? Thanks in advance
Feathered Friends make the best down gear ive ever used on my travels. Theyre expensive, but worth every cent, and theyre light too. Perhaps something to look into?
Just tested the Kilos gear air sleeping matt. Survived the Easter chill near Lakes Entrance. Only thing I didn't like was the built in pillow. It's too small to use on its own but makes a regular pillow too high! Been living out of a mountain hardwear ghost whisperer puffy for years. They're awesome, but the fabric is rather delicate.
Hello! I am in the process (mentally) of converting to a quilt. I have a couple of questions. Are you still using your top quilt? How many cold nights have you slept with it? I’ve used -10° in the Victorian alpines and am looking at the -10° quilt and am just concerned with drafts 😅 I heard they sleep colder. I’m a back, side and belly sleeper so I know this point will be of benefit
I am still using it over my other sleeping bag although I am still yet to go on an actual colder hike yet. This particular one does have two buttons up the top on the back that you can do up, I don't get a sense that a draft would be able to get through. My guess is as long as your sleeping pad can also do some work you'd be ok, But hard to say not having a cold night myself yet! I will report back once I do! haha :)
I know this video is a year old now, but my suggestion is the Mont Bell Plasma 1000 Alpine Down Jacket. It isn't the cheapest but it's the best! If you want to save $100 they do a non alpine version but it is still awesome.
Gear Gear Gear Gear I LOVE NEW GEAR 😍😍😍. That stuff pillow sack is an awesome idea, where can I find a link? I've recently brought a second tear away first aid kit for the side of my bag. Makes for quick and easy access in case of emergencies. Like my recent hike.
You just reminded me I forgot to put links in the description haha I have updated that now. I do have a one off hyperlite code for a discount but it will still cost your kidneys to ship it over :P That sounds pretty neat! I always feel guilty for having my PLB in my pack but my camera just takes up prime real estate position in the easy to reach places :P Did you need your first aid kit super quick on a recent hike? :O
Hi, I want to become a full time hiker or back packer, but I don't know where to start can you please tell me how can I start full time hiking, I am currently a student. Will really appreciate your help.
I can't wrap my brain around the fact that you have a DCF tent, but don't own a puffy?!? 😂🤣 😂 Seriously though. I've always had one, and now have 2. (one goose Mont for deep winter, and the Macpac Uber for everything else) They are the best warmth to weight ratio, and if you are switching to a quilt are excellent in deep winter for adding warmth at night, and stopping draughts. Having got a lightweight (Uber) at 300g (same as the decathlon everyone raves about) I've realised that I really only need the Mont (500g) in the coldest of cold here in AU. But I'm quite a warm body, so might be different for you? I looked at the Icefall from Macpac (same weight as the Uber, but more warmth), but I also didn't want to have to baby it as much, because the outer shell is very thin. I'm sure it's strong, but I've the luxury of the Mont as backup. Layering I definitely prefer to have the Nitro separate from the shell. (then the combined weight is 450g) Then it can go under the puffy, or I've worn it under my light rain jacked if I just need the wind protection when I'm on the move. Though I think you could have the Pisa under a light puffy and it'd be absolutely bonkers warm! If you are just testing the waters I'd highly recommend a cheap lightweight one to start, I think mine was $115 on sale, and the Decathlon is like $169? Compared to the Icefall closer to $300. .....you know this is going to be one of those "why didn't I get one of these sooner!" moments!! 😂🤣 😂
Hi Hayley, im in the market for a new quilt and I live in Australia, what's the coldest overnight you have spent in the neve gear quilt ? And how did you find it warmth wise? Im keen to support this Aussie brand and would love to hear your thoughts on it. Cheers, Laura.
Hi Laura, my thoughts on Neve Gear so far are very positive. My coldest night at the moment has probably only been around 8 degrees. I was still warm at that temperature. But my sleeping mat supposedly has an r value of 2 (if that) which is of course quite low. So I do suspect that if I had a higher rated mat then i'd be perfectly toasty when it's properly cold. You can definitely feel a difference when you strap yourself in as well so thats a positive. So I do need to do some more testing but I wouldnt hesitate to support them :)
Thanks for the reply Hayley, much appreciated. I now have the plan to purchase one, will be great to support the company and looks like they are producing a great product. Thanks for your videos, I always enjoy watching them. Oh also I did your protein gingerbread recipe, they were delicious and got rave reviews from everyone who had one 🤗 cheers, Laura.
Funnily enough I am yet to use a non free standing tent on a tent platform.
