Mikey Whipwreck won the fans over by being on the receiving end of brutal spots to better help his underdog persona, Tommy also started doing the same exact thing. Raven incapacitated his opponents by tying them up against the ropes, do something brutal like a chair shot and then do his trademark Raven taunt... well, Tommy also started doing all that, including the Raven taunt. Raven used the DDT as his finisher, Tommy also started using the DDT as his finisher. The Gangsters wore black cargo pants and black t-shirts as their ring gear, Tommy started wearing black cargo pants and a black t-shirt. Louie Spicolli impressed the audience with a modified fireman carry headspike as his finishing move, Tommy started using the move as his finisher. I can believe the idea of a HHH/Dreamer feud might have been considered as a part of the invasion angle before it was cut short. Otherwise it wasn't likely as Dreamer fits a niche that doesn't fit into Vince's vision.
Wouldn't surprise me if it were true. Dreamer was getting pushed at the time and Trips was coming off a month-or-so-long TV feud with Bubba Ray Dudley (during which Bubba had Hunter pinned for a 10-count in a title match during a ref bump). That was just before Summerslam I believe (Bubba was feuding with Brock heading into King of the Ring, so the timeline works out). I doubt it would have main evented a PPV or anything, but seems like there's a solid chance it's true. People seem to forget how in flux the upper card was at the time with the brand extension and Austin and Rock leaving.

2-3 weeks with a match in Philadelphia perhaps, or as a metaphorical sacrifice in a HHH/RVD feud, but take one look at the 2002 roster, and what Tommy was doing at the time like others have said. This would have never happened
Considering this would have been around the same time where in storyline HHH was going around banging store mannequins who were supposed to be corpses so anything is possible.
I could have pictured him doing a 2-4 week program with Tommy the way they did with guys like Spike Dudley or Bob Holly. But I agree that I can't see any way they would have done a multi month angle with him at the top.
Tommy Dreamer, was a great fit as a babyface in ECW. He had a certain charisma to him. He seemed genuinely nice. And his in ring stuff worked for ECW. But that's just it. It worked FOR ECW. He wasn't going to be a main event player anywhere else. Middle of the card, helping get other guys over, at the very most. There were genuinely some amazing talent to come out of ECW. Some ended up being huge stars down the road (Mick Foley). Some should've been but never quite got to the main event (Raven). But Dreamer ain't one of em. I do like him by the way.
The in ring work would have been good. I can't imagine worse promos. Dreamer was getting over in some of his matches for a while sometime around then. I could see it floating around as an idea, but when you mentioned someone pitching it to McMahon I totally lost it.

I could see it but not at that time. HHH was doing his reign of terror back then so you needed someone the crowd would get behind as a babyface. Dreamer today is that kind of guy but that's where you run into issues as back then he wasn't. People liked him but he was the heart and soul of ECW still back then, not of wrestling like today, so having him in that role wouldn't have accomplished what they wanted but HBK in that role is a different story.

Triple H was a babyface in 2002 until his DX reunion swerve when he pedigreed HBK. There was no way he was going to feud with Dreamer. Wasn’t Dreamer a babyface then, too? It was after the Invasion. Triple H wasn’t injured until his return at the Royal Rumble as a babyface. It just makes no sense. Maybe Tommy was still a heel then. And Triple H was wrestling Jericho for the title at Mania. I can’t see Vince putting Tommy into a title feud post Mania.
You really can't. Bubba Ray won matches where as Dreamer lost 98% of his matches. That was during Triple H's reign of terror. If you ask people who hate Triple H, that was when he beat a lot of top guys and he buried them by doing so. There was nothing for Triple H to bury with Tommy Dreamer. He wasn't over during that time period and to most, not a threat to Triple H's spot.

2-3 weeks with a match in Philadelphia perhaps, or as a metaphorical sacrifice in a HHH/RVD feud, but take one look at the 2002 roster, and what Tommy was doing at the time like others have said. This would have never happened
Considering this would have been around the same time where in storyline HHH was going around banging store mannequins who were supposed to be corpses so anything is possible.
This was a thing, I remember the set up between HHH and dreamer though I don't think it was a main event programme, but definitely a feud
I could have pictured him doing a 2-4 week program with Tommy the way they did with guys like Spike Dudley or Bob Holly. But I agree that I can't see any way they would have done a multi month angle with him at the top.
Tommy Dreamer, was a great fit as a babyface in ECW. He had a certain charisma to him. He seemed genuinely nice. And his in ring stuff worked for ECW. But that's just it. It worked FOR ECW. He wasn't going to be a main event player anywhere else. Middle of the card, helping get other guys over, at the very most.
There were genuinely some amazing talent to come out of ECW. Some ended up being huge stars down the road (Mick Foley). Some should've been but never quite got to the main event (Raven). But Dreamer ain't one of em. I do like him by the way.

The in ring work would have been good. I can't imagine worse promos. Dreamer was getting over in some of his matches for a while sometime around then. I could see it floating around as an idea, but when you mentioned someone pitching it to McMahon I totally lost it.
I doubt there was ever any plan to have Tommy Dreamer feud with HHH in 2002. Dreamer was puking and eating his own vomit while doing the Hardcore Title thing toward the end of that Title's existence.

I wondered if the only bad thing Triple H did was bury Ken Shamrock behind the scenes. All the other "backstage bs" he did I begrudgingly understand.
I could see it but not at that time. HHH was doing his reign of terror back then so you needed someone the crowd would get behind as a babyface. Dreamer today is that kind of guy but that's where you run into issues as back then he wasn't. People liked him but he was the heart and soul of ECW still back then, not of wrestling like today, so having him in that role wouldn't have accomplished what they wanted but HBK in that role is a different story.

If Hardcore Holly can get a match against Lesnar then Triple H going over Dreamer is not that much of a stretch. The ECW hardcore icon still bitter about it ending could be a story.

Triple H was a babyface in 2002 until his DX reunion swerve when he pedigreed HBK. There was no way he was going to feud with Dreamer. Wasn’t Dreamer a babyface then, too? It was after the Invasion. Triple H wasn’t injured until his return at the Royal Rumble as a babyface. It just makes no sense. Maybe Tommy was still a heel then. And Triple H was wrestling Jericho for the title at Mania. I can’t see Vince putting Tommy into a title feud post Mania.

You really can't. Bubba Ray won matches where as Dreamer lost 98% of his matches. That was during Triple H's reign of terror. If you ask people who hate Triple H, that was when he beat a lot of top guys and he buried them by doing so. There was nothing for Triple H to bury with Tommy Dreamer. He wasn't over during that time period and to most, not a threat to Triple H's spot.
@@pikkon899 Yeah, but it’s evidence that they were looking to get new guys in the main event scene, and Tommy had a little run with the Hardcore Belt that seemed to get a little traction. Not that I buy that they flat out had him penciled in for the SS main event, but as someone similarly situated to Bubba on the card, I could see his name at least getting tossed around in some creative meetings.
@@Thecallmemisterajp That's not "evidence" Bubba was over where as Dreamer was not. Bubba Ray did better than D'Von during their singles run in WWE. Plus, Bubba had a makeshift team with Trish Stratus that was over with the crowd. There was more potential for Bubba and he was on TV every week. There was no potential Dreamer. He wasn't over nor was he established with the crowd other than being an "ECW guy" Bubba was there with Triple H because he was established and had a fanbase. Dreamer had nothing next to Bubba at this point in his career.

Doesn’t mean he’s the first choice for the ME, but as someone who witness a Bob Holly PPV WWE Title match in person, he’s not the most implausible option I’ve ever heard.
@@Thecallmemisterajp It's pure speculation. Dreamer at this point and prior was being jobbed out. Why would they consider a jobber at any meeting to go up against Triple H? They gave Dreamer the gimmick where he ate nasty stuff. That was as far as he ever got and he lost every match. Holly actually had steam behind him when he was chasing the belt. He was clearly being pushed and he got reactions from the crowd. Holly was more over with the WWF crowd when chasing Brock than Dreamer was during his entire WWE run.

The thing with Dreamer is he obviously passionate and he does have a lot of respect for Dusty Rhodes, Road Warriors et al but I he’s completely ignorant to what wrestling actually is and that some of his actions do discredit wrestling. I feel like if he actually knew that he wouldn’t do it. He’s been around a LONG time but he’s at the front and centre of trash like wrestlehouse and the who killed Johnny Bravo nonsense on IMPACT.
