As a musician, I had the honor of being part of the Portuguese cultural embassy at the official celebrations of the 450 years of Portugal/Japan friendship, in Tokyo and Nagasaki. I then met many Japanese people, with some of whom I maintain a solid friendship. They were unforgettable days, which will last throughout my life. There's something people need to understand, with it's vast presence, Portuguese were just a few and could never (would never) impose themselves thru sheer force. The other particularity was that Portuguese, contrary to other European countries, mixed themselves with the population, leading to a better understanding of the local cultures. You can still see it today in Portugal population, and the presence of people from all around the world!

I'd assume the celebration here occurs due, in part, the role that the Portuguese had by introducing the first muskets ever to the land, in ending the warring states era (Sengoku) and therefore aided the process of unification of Japan as united country.

The original film was called A Liar's Tale and was part of a four-part series called Into the Rising Sun. Why they renamed it The Birth of Modern Japan -- we have no clue. It is a good example of ruining a film title, though. Or aat least make sure no one would watch it.
