- Welcome to Motorcycle.com's 2017 Sport Touring Shootout. But this isn't your average shootout. Instead, we're bringing three different flavors of Sport-Touring with the BMW S1000XR, KTM Super Duke GT, and MV Agusta Turismo Veloce. As well as representing three different countries, the trio also represents three different engine configurations: a 1301cc V-Twin for the KTM, 798cc Triple for the MV, and a 999cc Four for the BMW. On the surface you might think the MV is completely outmatched in this faceoff against the BMW and KTM, but, like us, we think you'll be surprised how high above its weight class it can compete.
So how do they stack up? Watch the video to find out.

Had my MV Turismo nearly 3 years now. Perfect? No. It's too tall (for me at 5ft 8), the steering lock is poor and no top box available (as it would spoil the looks), the dealer network in the UK is poor, servicing is not cheap but.... even now I sometimes go into my garage and just stare at it. The quality and detail is exquisite. Even the side stand looks elegant. The fit and finish is superb. No corrosion whatsoever. I've added a QD exhaust (and had it muted a little) and it just howls, then pops on the overrun. It's so light and well balanced and handles so well it makes me feel I'm a better rider than I am. I've toured central Spain then ridden through France, Germany, Switzerland and down to Italy and back and it is so comfortable. No other bike has ever got me in the way the MV has, and I'm 65 this year!
Hoof Hearted im considering buying a tourismo myself in nepal, im plan to get the 2017 model itself used. What should i be worried about regarding maintenance wise if i ride 20-30km everyday? Or overall?
The MV is really beautiful! And isn't it fun to ride something different than most people? I just testrode that sweet/angry/smooth engine in the Brutale. I loved it! Good choice, sir.
Hallo mate.. You had issues? I saw a video from an owner and he explain that he had a lot issues.. Not engine but others.. Also he said that the costumer service is shit.. Nobody helped him so he sold it.. What about yours?
Hi Vagelis. I've had it nearly 4 years on now and covered over 13,000 miles. Spares situation is still very hit and miss in the UK. The fuel level sensor has failed (common problem on MV triples, apparently) but none in stock in Italy, but still rideable. It also has a clutch grabbing problem that needs sorting out as it makes a quick pull-away very hairy. The newer models have the SCS clutchless-system that is supposed to be superb.
The finish is still amazing and on par with my earlier BMW R Nine T and streets ahead of my 2018 Indian Scout. The few UK dealers there are, are generally very good. I still just love the whole package and it really does make a great touring machine with 50+mpg, ridden sensibly, and a range of over 200 miles. The panniers are superb, don't leak, and each hold a full-face helmet. I'm not going to say it's better than this bike, or better than that, because we're all different but 4 years on and it still excites me.
@@ironhorse1074 thank you for the informations.. I am considering to buy a bike after some months (now I have the versys 650 2017) and the veloce is one of the bikes who I like a lot.. The other guy had exactly these 2 issues and some more.. So I am thinking that I must see if the owner of the bike fix the common problems before to buy her.. I have many bikes to my mind.. The mv Agusta must support more the bikes because are so beautiful.. Something different.. If this bike had a badge of Honda or BMW etc will sell millions of them because of the costumer service..
Enjoy your bike mate!it's a piece of art! Thank you again for your answer..
Looks like a new format and better quality love the new look and style of review keep it up guys :)
Thanks!
Agreed, this was much more well done than their older videos. I'm resubscribing.
Brad Bradbury Would love to have seen the Multistrada included. Great video. Thanks.
Wonder which camera they used for the talking head portions of the video.
KTM ❤️ Even after a year of riding it, I still catch myself laughing out loud inside my helmet when powering down a twisty road 😂😂😂
Having ridden all 3 numerous times I thought the BMW was far superior and much better quality than the other 2, I thought the ktm felt a bit plastic and cheap and not worth the ridiculous price tag and the mv was cramped but then I am 6"2.
The S1000xr engine is a peach, it sounds like a sports bike goes like a sports bike but is soo comfortable, that's why I bought one 😁
Barry Stuchbury I sold my bmw and bought the ktm, because of the motor. It’s a beast compared to the bmw
Omg I love MV's what ever they are..some day MV ..some day.
Difficult to build a bad motorcycle when you got that ktm v twin in the frame, great review guys loved it.
Really like the side shots, shows the ergos well.
Truly, a professional (an entertaining) review . . . sets a standard against which others should aspire. The only feature I'd like to hear about is speculation about the cost of ownership over five years. When I look back over the fifty years I've been riding, that one review category- for most reviews - is conspicuously absent.
Put the correct bar-end weights on the XR and the vibes disappear. So does the bike with it's powerhouse inline 4 engine! The BMW for the win!
Almost bought the BMW S1000XR in 2016. Bought a 2016 Kawasaki Versys 1000LT saved tons of money and got a bullet proof reliable bike that comes with a 2 year warranty
weljo2001 but its super ugly and not nearly as sporty as the bmw :/
weljo2001 oh wait nvm they updated the looks of the new versys...i was thinking of the old boxy versys
I took off the saddle bags until needed....flic.kr/p/NE2Xy7
weljo2001 I agree
weljo2001 Another reason to buy the Kawi over the S1000XR is that when it's out of warranty, BMW stands for bring my wallet.
Really nice test and review. Video quality is very high. Great job all around.
All 3 reviewers made good points and explained their likes and dislikes in a manner which would help any prospective buyer.
The drone shots of the roads around Solvang are superb. Makes me sorry to be in Seattle in November with unending rain.
You guys are great! KTM is dancing w me in my dreams!
This might be their greatest review ever
Just watched this video, I really enjoyed watching and listening to your comments. Well done guys!
Very nice review, always interesting to see an MV in the mix.
I've owned a 2016 XR for a while now and if it was gone tomorrow and I was given a cheque to purchase a replacement I wouldn't hesitate to by another XR. I've owned a 2010 SMT and several other KTM's and I do like them but I can't get beyond how gruesome the Super Duke is. I've also owned several Ducati, the last being a 2013 Multi GT and I won't go down the exotic Italian motorcycle road ever again.
Jack Peters iv a 2017 xr1000 and i love it.had a ktm well my dealer had it more than me.never again will i buy a ktm. Unless it a 2 stroke mx/enduro
Can't wait to get my BMW S1000XR!
Did you get you're XR?
Quibb He couldn`t wait ...
Good to see ya having a great time, Tom!
one of your best videos guys!! you guys seemed to be genuinely happy in this one lol :-)
Can you post the settings you used for the suspension on the MV please. I find mine dives on the brakes too much and can then bounce up.
Great review, freaking love your videos guys, keep up the good work
excellent job guys. 4k even better
Very nice video! Thank you for the 4k!
great review guys. I definitely agree on the KTM win
Thoroughly enjoyed the review even though the MV did not win :)
Quality review, these guys are the real deal. Many thanks.
Bummer the multistrada was not included.
I was curious as to why it was not myself. Himmfff. Nor was the Suzuki Vstrom 1000. I mean, sure the Vstrom/DL1000 is called an "adventure bike", but that is a joke really. They are much more a sport touring bike than an ADV bike. It is how I look at own Vstrom650. As a ST, not an ADV in all reality. It just has some, minor, baby, off road ability. lol
In my opinion the Multistrada,s1000xr,MV and KTM are their own category which I look at as a super sport touring. These bikes are the highest performance forum of a Touring bike meaning big horsepower sport oriented wheels and tires and suspension. I just thought it was sad the bike that got this all started which was a Ducati wasn't included even though it's been tested before. and yes the V storm is a great bike but not in the same category.
I was quite amazed that the Multi would not be included in this video. The Multi is a very much the sports tourer.
They couldn't find one that would stay running long enough to complete the test ride.
percussion 44 I guess everyone has there own opinion. me personally couldn't be happier with my multistrada and it even starts and runs every single day since I use it as a DD ;)
Fantastic review. I have been thinking of exactly these three bikes for my next purchase and this really has helped. Thanks
Great video. Artistic editing and camera work.
These guys are nuts... How could any professional not appreciate the S1KXR as the obvious best choice of those bikes, lol.
I've ridden the KTM and the BMW. For me, BMW, the one that I own, is hands down the winner. What an awesome machine. A set of bar end weights and your vibe issue is done. One thing to say is the short guy of the three just feels more comfortable on a shorter bike. It makes sense and I believe that's 90% of it.
So you pick the bike you own as the winner?!? What a surprise. No ownership bias here, did you even try to be objective?
Hey Guys, thanks for a great comparo. I would have loved to seen the 2017 Multistrada S included in your comparison, any chance you could include that bike in a test in the future?
Great review, thank you. Very informative about the nuances that separate these amazing bikes. I collect my MV TV in 4 days time... I have a KTM 990 SMT now but the SD GT is too fugly, heavy and IMHO it comes over as a sloppily reworked Super Duke (too much plastic, too many different finishes, confused lines, far too busy.) The SMT was a much nicer, cleaner rework of the 990 Supermoto, for comparison. Likewise the S1000XR is too heavy and as much as a farkle-fest as the Multistrada. I ride 12 months a year, commute, tour, scratch and do a few track days and guys, I CANNOT see how anybody can use +150hp! Its pure vanity. Besides, as Colin Chapman said, 'Just add lightness.'
That's your opinion
And what about now? Did mv last long enough? ^^
Looking into it to replace my fz6s fazer. Or go with naked one. Still unclear.
hey put a direct link to the article in the notes... so we can easily see the winner! great video guys!
Ask, and you shall receive!
Updated the link. Thanks!
more videos of the KTM!!!!
I naught the 2016 S1000XR, put the after market handle bar ends on and the triple tree dampener on at no extra cost. My wrist has some bone on bone issues, so I was very concerned, but there is no vibration problem. The bike is perfect! No complaints. BMW has offered this to dealers in order to move the inventory of 2016s out so they can bring in the 2017s. LOVE THE BIKE!
Nice one guys, I really enjoy the Sport Touring shootouts. I am still riding a 23 year old CBR1000F, but really enjoy your reviews... Thanks again.

Great to see you've up'd the production quality
I guess the interpretation of Sport Touring bikes is changing. These are more of adventure bikes that have adapted to street use. Sport Touring IMO is FJR, Connie, K1600, ST1300, Motus, Trophy, etc. Great video though. I'd like to ride a Super Duke GT.
I'd say more along the lines of naked bikes with touring amenities than pavement focused ADV bikes. The Sport touring class is pretty broad with some approaching the size of luxury tourers like the K1600, FJR and Trophy and some down around the size of a super sport like the Interceptor.
mrvwbug44 k1600 and trophy are just recognized and marketed as touring bikes these days by their respective companies
VFR800, 105hp V4 and 50+ mpg for touring, just needs cruise control....
If you're talking about the current Interceptor it's a terrible touring bike. Way too aggressive of a riding position, basically the same as the current CBR600RR. Aside from the cool engine there really isn't any reason to buy it over a supersport.
I compared one to an F800GT and ended up with the GT because the GT was just a much more comfortable and well equipped bike.
Kyle, the VFR 800 and the CBR600rr has very different seating positions - the CBR is 5 cm taller and 12% more forward lean. look at cycle-ergo.com. I think part of the difference between sports touring and adventouring is the seating position - more sporty or more upright - and I prefer a semi-sporty riding positing :)
A Yamaha XT250 is really the way to go.
Nicely edited video!
I tried a few top brand bikes out - anyone who hasn't tried the large KTM range needs to. I own 1 & love it. by far the best bike for your dollar's.
Great review guys! Of these three I've ridden the BMW and the MV Agusta. I have to say I loved the MV Agusta. I do not have one only because there are no dealers in a 300 mile range from my house... The BMW is the most precise motorcycle I've ever ridden. Perhaps because of that it is a bit boring. BTW, I own a 2013 Multistrada Pikes Peak. Love the Multistrada.
be nice how could i not be nice you guys do a great job
Thanks for an informative and well presented video, all the best from the UK.
Nicely done! Good job, guys!
awesome review! all the best guys!
I am surprised that these three bikes are now called "sport-touring". A few years ago sport-touring were the Yamaha FJR1300, Honda ST1300, and Kawasaki Consours. All the bikes had full fairing and large windshields. Has the class changed?
That's definitely a class, but the ones you mentioned are more traditional lower slung sportbikes or sport-standards with a lot of touring added in, whereas the ones in the review here are more ADV-sport-touring bikes due to longer travel suspension and less general weight. Two distinct classes of bike these days. From my own personal research, I feel there are the following classes:
Sport-touring class (such as FJR1300, etc)
Adventure sport-touring class (total paved bias) (long travel suspension, upright ergos) (bikes in this review)
Adventure touring class (on-paved biased, some off-paved ability) (same as above, but 19" front wheels)
Dual-sport class (off-paved biased, some one-paved ability) (same as above, but 21" front wheels)
Enduro class (road-legal dirtbikes, clearly built for 100% dirt use)
Off-road (not road-legal)
Hope that makes sense. Publications try their best to match up categories and price points for reviews, sometimes blending in one or two outliers to the class for people who may cross-shop. All depends on the motive of the review.
If memory serves me right..... Only the XR has long travel suspension..
The KTM and Turismo both sit fairly low
I am seeing lately the FJR, ST, K16 etc.. being called Supersport Tourers as the overall class grows and segments.
This whole thing is a bit confusing. This is what they are calling sport tourers now? So where was the Kawasaki Ninja 1000? Where was the Ducati Multi? More importantly, where were the REAL sport tourers? The Connie, the FJR, the Norge, the ST, the RT, and dare I say even the K16... I can see where the Duke GT could run with these bikes, but the others? Nah. KTM all the way if I had to choose from these three.
Not quite sure what your confusion is, but here's a simple thought. Can you go touring on the bike? And is it sporty? If you answered yes to both questions then sport tourer is an apt descriptions. I've ridden every bike you mentioned except the MV, and all fit the sport tourer description. I too always thought a big fully faired bike like the Connie, FJR, GT, etc., that could give a good run through the canyons was the definition. That was until I bought a Triumph Tiger 1050 in Kallispell, rode it down through the Rockies into Denver, and on the final day rode it all the way from Denver to Los Angeles. A thousand miles in a day and I felt no worse than on my big touring bike. And yet, I had a nimble fun bike for the twisties in the Rockies. I was shocked! Of course I wanted more power, so I bought a Multistrada in Florida and once again rode all the way back to California. Great tour, but also awesome in the twisties of Arkansas. That's what finally made me buy an S1000XR. Almost as comfy as the Multistrada, but so much more confidence inspiring in the twisties. Yes, you can rip on it, but it's a nice comfortable upright touring bike when I need it. That's a sport-tourer.
Think of these bikes more as styling exercises lol.
Another bike that could be a worthy contender to at least the BMW is the KTM SuperAdventure 1290. I tried it last year before getting my S1000XR, and I liked it a lot. Very comfortable with very little vibration despite being a twin. Very powerful with better torque than the BMW, although not as great as the SuperDuke. The thing that turned me off was that the keyless ignition broke down during my test ride. Suddenly, the main screen showed a message that there was no key in the vicinity, despite me having it in my pocket. The engine continued to run of course, but I also knew I couldn't turn it off, because I might not be able to get it to start again.
Mv EVER❤️
Agreed with the comment below, probably should've included the Multistrada and perhaps maybe the Tenere. Good review, really enjoyed it and thanks for the summary.
Great vid guys, beautifully shot too! How good does that drone footage look!
It's perplexing that BMW released the XR with the vibration issue, I agree - its a deal breaker and a real shame...
Yeah that bit of buzz might be acceptable on a 10 grand Japanese bike, not a 22 grand German bike.
The vibe issue is over blown - heavier bar ends, mileage and day to day use and hardly ever notice any vibes.
quality was awesome
nice shootout
Good review! All so tempting.
super duke looks and sounds great...thanks for the comparison
Thanks Guys nice review
"Small Dutch town of Solvang"
Danish...
same thing
BarryEssex Close, NO cigar
isn't a Danish a thing you buy at your local store with a coffee and a thing u eat? lol
Most Americans are clueless about the rest of the world. Same as Pennsylvania Dutch when its actually German...not Dutch. Or more specifically, the Amish originally came from Switzerland where they speak German. But, I digress.
super video guys
It looks like it would be a great time riding with you all
Cracking video guys, very enjoyable.I know what you mean by the buzzy XR i was horrible when I tried one. The GT is the winner for me with the MV coming in second. I loved the pannier bag competition haha.
but how's the reliability between the three?
Also, keep in mind with weighted bar ends, people say that the vibrations are reduced by 80%.
KTMs are supposed to be reasonably reliable, only just below the Japanese big 4 and way better than the rest of the Euro bikemakers and Harley. MVs are quirky and Italian, that should tell you all you need to know about how reliable they are. Bimmers are legendary for being total money pits.
I wouldn't trust the reliability of any of them ...
lol. KTM is a lot, but surely not know for it's reliability. In Germany, KTM was translated to "keine Tausend Kilometer" (which basically means 'no 600 miles') for years. They had different models in long-term-tests at the biggest german motorcycle-magazine and quite a few of them had fatal engine-breakdowns. The RC8 got replaced in it's test, and the new bike they got had a fatal breakdown, as well.
It's getting better, but they still have issues.
I'm not saying the MV is reliable but you must remember people go on forums to post problems. Noone starts threads about how great their bike is. So while you see lots of problems on forums, theres 10x more owners who are enjoying their products daily
mrvwbug44 KTM are "better than the rest of the Euro bikemakers" according to who? Are there data that I do not know? Aprilia are "Italian" and they have shown good reliability.
Guess what I bought! great review
Nice review, thanks guys. For the panniers, I have to add that for any one of them, you have to live with it for a while to get the trick down right. That said, I have to say that the MV did a great job in integrating the bags with out having any evidence of bags when they're off. Nice sleek tail.
How does the Yamaha FJR 1300 compare with this trio as far as a good sport/tourer goes. Can these three expensive European bikes match the Yamaha for reliability, price and affordable parts? Are they as comfortable on the open road?
this video helped me buy a TV RC with SCS, for very expensive money, really nice to watch and great to drive! Spare parts supply super bad, maybe not even possible ..., MV dealers who refuse to change the tire 🤥 booked out ... Summary: If you buy an MV for expensive money and want to drive a lot, the first thing you bring is a second bike that works. If you pay a lot of money, you may also have certain claims, e.g. perception as a customer and e.g. the manual which is not very good, but ok demand from MV, e.g. on the functioning of the TC ... the dealer knows nothing, MV headquarters asks for contacting the dealer and does not provide any information, sales manager does not respond ... So questions remain open ... From experience I can only say that the competition is much better is in communication and appreciation of paying customers. In my opinion, MV is expanding the bad image with maximum arrogance and ignorance, too bad ... I'm glad to have another moped that drives great 👍
funniest video/episode I ever watched , totally love it .. Totally !
and The info is Greatttttt
Which mic was being used in the beginning of the video? Crazy clear.
brilliant report as always................I trust your balanced judgement regards Snake Australia
where is the tiger 1050 and the yamaha 09tracer?
"Small Dutch village of Solvang..." Dude it's Danish
Well put, Evans :)
Any chance you guys have a middleweight naked shootout coming? I've been hoping to see how the new Brutale 800 stacks up against the competition
Against the all new Z900, greatly improved FZ-09, and all new street triple? I don't have high hopes for the Brutale in that crowd.
Totally awesome review.. I appreciate it, thank you
Did the XR cause your right hand to fall off due to vibrations ? sold mine after 3k impossible to ride
Leave a comment and be nice? Not me. But! good video you blokes. I enjoyed the different views, thoughts and reasons. Thanks.
Great video review! What camera body did you use to film the testimonials?
nice to see mv making bikes to make some money with, hopefully they will update the f3 line on this new platform soon so i can spend some money :)
great video! thanks ... can I ask how did you do with the suspensions of the MV ? I'vê got the TV and I'm looking for a better setting ...thanks
Where do I buy one of those gasolina camo hats?
Only saw video this evening, Very informative & presented by £ informed folk. Keep it up chaps, Yours Ian
Wish you guys would have brought in the Yam, Kaw, and Triumph bikes too.
Mv Agusta❤️
Can we get a GSX-S750 vs FZ-09 vs Z900 shootout now that the new FZ-09 is out?
I think the more appropriate comparison would have been the Multi 1200, KTM GT, BMW R 1200 GS, and the Aprilia Caponord. All around 1200-1300cc.
The R1200 wouldn't be able to keep up with that group, it is 50hp down on the KTM.
Archie the GS has the low end grunt for sure but it still wouldn't keep up with the likes of the s1000xr and GT..
Great vid
The KTM ❤️❤️
vedant deshpande yes best
Absolutely loving the step up in production value! Though Troy has my sympathy for having to have a handheld mic ;)
When is the 2017 superbike shootout. I thought you guys woulda hopped on that by now 🤔
The only reason I didn't buy the S1000XR is because I just couldn't stand the vibrations. These guy are spot on describing the vibrations on that bike.
Vibrations are over blown. I barely notice vibrations on mine with the Heavier bar ends and mileage.
only 3 bikes? FJ09/MT09-Tracer?
bro, I'm confused what to buy, fz25 or r15S
I know it's discontinued, but k1300s? Or even the zx14r
I thought BMW have not shipped the 2017 XR yet. The 2017 suppose to have addressed the vibration issue.
We need the 2020 version of this but get rid of the MV for the Multistrada this is what the people have been waiting for.
The 2017 BMW S1000 XR is not in the USA market yet. Was this a 2016 XR you were comparing?
pls do video on how to tour in hoit weather
Really nice quality and camera work! You are too late, though - I already ordered my Super Duke GT so it was all for nothing ;)
I hope you guys do a Mt07 vs Monster 797
adrián ferrer $ for $ it technically should be fz09 vs monster 797
for an starter rider... (A2)
adrián ferrer ah I see. I don't think of it that way because in North America you can get whatever size CC/hp bike regardless of which motorcycle lisence you hold (learner's included)
