Loved this. ♥ Though "saving money" as a reason... I changed my mind about that after 50. My time now feels way more important than my money. Nevertheless, I keep taking the DIY route for all the other reasons you mention. ;-) Plus two: 1. Sometimes, what I want is so specific, that it can't be purchased anywhere. Doing it myself is sometimes the only way. 2. Being "in the zone". Priceless to escape dark moods. I like to joke about it, saying that my workbench is my therapist. ;-)
If it's a project for me, I do it because I get what I want, with the features that I want. I very rarely find "the thing" I want ready to buy. I do enjoy fixing things. I get a sense of accomplishment making something better than it was, or repurposing something for a new use. We send too much stuff to landfill.
Some of he times it just the challenge of doing something to see if we can. If we do have the skills do do some of these things a lot of the time the project we do on our own is better or more classy than a lot of the cheep stuff we could buy. Also we don't have to wait on someone else to do the project.
I don't think that saving money is always a factor. Sometimes you tthink "I just want to do that project for the hell of it, it appeals" These tpes of project will cost you money but your other points make it worthwhile
Your five reasons are all valid for me, and I have one more - it's a heck of a lot of FUN to build/make things.
For sure. Its super fun making things.

Yes! Being able to create exactly what we want/need is a big part of it.
