On your feeders I would place a board at the bottom that slopes towards the front so that the hay is forced towards the front of the feeder and the goats can get it all and no old hay remains at the back of the feeder .
Yes good idea and it also looks like the diagonal wood strips are now blocking some of the holes.
I was just thinking that also the goats can't get their muzzles in far enough to get the hay at the back and knowing goat thet will rub their muzzles raw trying to get to it in the future I bet! GOOD CALL
Was just wondering how they’d get the hay at the back.
brilliant.
Ur an awesome carpenter!! My husband & I love watching u build the structures on ur place. They all look beautiful w their ‘natural’ finishes!!! Keep it up!
The trim work done today looks mighty fine. Won't be long til the whole building is under roof. Have a Blessed day.
Just sat down with a cup of Free Range coffee " I like it!" Thanks ❤😊
Al I don’t know about the wire being the best option in the feeders . You may need to rethink that when it’s freezing this winter. It’s more compact but I think they kept their heads inside the old feeder style. They pull it out in the new one. That frozen wire may be rough on their faces this winter. You take such good care of them . It’s a joy to watch. You guys are not cruel at all to your animals. I just wonder about the wire.
It's looking good you two. I'm amazed at how quickly it's coming together.
Thanks for taking the time to video it and show it to us,
Jimmy
I installed armourlite (3/12 wire wrapped in flexible metal conduit) in my barn. It was quicker than traditional conduit and gives protection to the wires from bumping and chewing rodents....I also used LED lights.
Keep the wires in metal conduit, goats, field mice, rats etc, are all known to chew on exposed wires.
Yes
Double yes
Totally in on the metal conduit solution
Good idea!
Really liking that wood shed with carport. Looks awesome!
And so will the carpenter bees first thing in the spring!
@@Rattlerjake1 DO THEY MAKE HONEY?? UK
Coming along nicely. I really like it. Yes, days are getting shorter. Keep up the good work. Bless you all!
Wow I'm surprised how far you all have come. I've seen every video also how your property looks very nice and organized. You all have done a awesome job! On everything from animals, pets, cooking, property, woodshed, 🐐 barn to a wonderful homestead. Also that's the first thing I watch every morning except Wednesday and Sunday lol. Me myself I live in the city limits but I remember all that good stuff when I used to help my grandparents and elderly family members. Reminiscing! Thanks for awesome videos brings back good memories. May God bless you all with everything.
Shed is incredible, you have worked so had this summer. What a blessing you all are.
🕊🙏🌞🇺🇸
On Amazon - addlon brand 4ft LED shop lights. A 10 pack of them will cover the entire barn. Put a minimum of 2 (one in each side of the room) to prevent heavy shadows. Hard wire 3 prong electrical outlets on the ceiling for easy plugin and expansion of lights!
2 in the goat room, 2 in the milking room, hang the last 6 in the shop. More light is always better in a shop/project room!
I also recommend getting some LED motion sensing exterior lights above the door that is always powered on. Helps a ton when you are heading out early in the morning, or heavy snow or any time you need light!
There are currently, September 7th, 2019, exactly 35 lost souls who have no heart that come here and 👎🏽. Praying for them. We love your channel Al and Gina, God bless you all in your endeavors on your modern homestead. 👍🏼✝️❤️
Jealousy or Fat Finger Syndrome.
Recycling a shipping crate to something useful👍🏻, now that is how to save the Planet with style👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I picked up leftover crate material for ac unit at a mall and made a 9 ft extension for my goat shed.
Carport is looking great! Really enjoying you two working together! 💕
Another productive day on the farm! Keep up the great work. I recently went back and watched the videos from a couple of years ago...such progress!
The shed/car port,looks great!
I waiting for cooler weather...80's for highs...60's for lows...I like it a bit cooler. Fall is coming!!!
My garden is given it's all and is done.
Thank you for sharing your journey and God bless.
Love seeing animals and the wood shed getting finished.
good work guys.
The car port is coming along great! Blessings to all.
Coming along nicely! Just be sure to rake back the gravel around building perimeter to prevent end grain of siding wicking water and causing premature decay.
FOR SURE IT WILL, GREAT COMMENT,UK
SHOULD HAVE WOOD STAINED ALL THE WOOD THAT COMES IN TO CONTACT WITH THE GROUND/GRAVEL BEFORE PUTTING IT UP!!
Al, Watching you build that barn and woodshed has inspired me to build one myself. Thanks and hopefully I can be as patient as you are. Bless
We have had fall weather the past two days and it makes me so happy. We get that heavy marine layer that makes it grey and overcast until 11 am. Then the sun comes out and its been pretty breezy as well. I love it!
Finally. I feel that I can contribute something. I am electronics systems engineer, retired. Before investing in all the LED's. Experiment with getting the right degree kelvin temperature of the lights. Daylight, etc. They come in bright white all the way to yellow.
George Thomas I like mine around 3000K
Try to have just indirect incandescent lighting directed to the Ground..in New Hampshire, some Counties require it..it prevents Light Pollution of the sky and looks neater than bleak stark lights that aggress you
What a strong and well built shed. God willing Olivias grandchildren will be storing wood in Papa Al and Nonna Gina's shed.
Always run in properly earthed metal conduit, rats, goats and other animals can chew on the cables endangering them and possibly burning the barn down
This is so true. The goats are the wiring on my trailer. I use those transport lights now and keep them under the truck seats. LOL. I found out the next month or two that goats need copper to prevent anemia. I now give them copper 2x year.
Love all the building.
I always spray my cables with Louisiana Hot Sauce so animals won’t chew on em. 😏
Animals also hate used oil. Put used oil on rails in a barn and a horse will stop chewing it. It dries after a few hours and is no longer slippery or sticky. Also doesn’t smell.
**Hornworms** ... Definitely the apple trees...You guys should try to get a few secs of footage of the Humming bird moths they become...Very cool.
It’s great to see you both working together!! You both great examples for young people and keep up the team work!
Good ☕️ Morning Al,Gina & Olivia,love the carport & you work so well together.Awesome!! 😊👍🏻
Your family sure does make a good team!! Al you always thank us at the end of the videos I would like to say thank you for your hard work and dedication.
led shop lights , wires on ceilings, 3 and 4 way switches. Add remote temp sensor to monitor barn temp during the winter months.
I'm surprised that you aren't canning apple sauce out of all those lovely apples. You could even can slice apples to be canned & then used for apple pies etc. Maybe even dehydrate them for snacks. There are so many ways you could be salvaging those apples. My grandparents, parents and I used to preserve almost everything, I love our canned chicken. I loved canning potatoes too, so come fall & winter, all the ingredients were downstairs in our canning room, for making stews, pot roasts, pies, etc. I miss canned pickled beets & our dill pickles. I miss those days, they were hard work but an honest wholesome way of life. God Bless you folks, I love your videos. Thanks for sharing your journey. Sincerely, from Canada
Al, you are an inspiration to all us!
Oh, just let Gina have the carport, sheesh! The nice little overhang on the outdoor kitchen works fine for the smaller tractor.
I agree!
I think he's just giving her a hard time. Looking at all the old winter videos where he cleans off her snow and warms up her car... He's too considerate to really be thinking about using it for the Kabota. I think he's just yankin' her chain cuz that's what husbands and wives do. :)
Every time I see Calab and Zeke I am more and more impressed by their breeding. They're both lovely examples of the breed.
I still say Gina is the goat whisperer.
I hear you on the dark mornings. Here in Torbay Newfoundland Canada. Was up at 5:45 with our 3 month old German shepherd and had to turn the outside lights on. Oh Al winter is coming on fast! Love your videos. Geoff
Real nice to see you both work together I outside and outside your home.....👍👍👍
Love your careful management of your materials. Waste not, want not
Al I can honestly say that I have never seen you build something that looked hideous lol. I am loving the carport/tractor shelter and wood storage, they are coming together beautifully. So great to have an extra set of hands to help and I am learning by watching Gina too!
It is so relaxing to watch you all. Your daughter was so cute hauling Figaro along with her. Ha. The new shed looking fantastic. Teamwork! 😺💞
Al, I like the way you think out loud, it helps us students to lean more.
James Tate Yes I was saying that this morning with his honey there he doesn’t talk as much. I miss the monologue.
Morning😊yes it is darker later makes getting up harder!
I have to hold my breath every time you use the miter saw. You need to learn how to cut left handed. I know of at least four time that you crossed your left arm over to hold the material when you cut. That is very scary. Hold the material with your right hand and use your left hand on the motor head when you cut. You will find it is more comfortable to.
The Wood shed / Gina's carport is looking great Y'all are a great team. Keep up the good work. God Bless you and your family.
That carport is looking great guys, what an excellent job!
LED striplights and run the wiring in a metal conduit (earthed, obviously!)
In very cold conditions the striplights wear out really fast. we've had to replace the LED lights in our unheated workshop 3 times now in just a couple years.
I’ve used led lights in my unseated garage for about 5 years now with no issues.
@@mimiso2522
Wet or damp rated?
@@Foche_T._Schitt They were supposed to be rated for outdoor use. But to be fair they were cheap Menards ones made in China.
Got mine at Sam’s Club not sure of the brand.
I built my barn last year; I went led all the way; I don't know the brand but in the middle it is a very long thin strip that looks like nothing but when you flip the switch a huge area is lit up like day light; love led; I have a dusk to dawn light on the front of the barn also led; I love that as well!
Really looking nice ! I like how Gina sets the camera up on the tripod for a longer shot . All those close ups make my eyes spin
Al and Gina, you are doing awesome work. I love yoir progress this summer. Hoping Gina will find her niche here with some of her own contributions in addition to nailing and cooking. You are such a wonderful tight family. Maybe she can do more with the goats, or create wonderful scenarios fir the workshop. Maybe she has projects of her own going on. Maybe therw are bew options for the vasement now that the barn is nearing completion. I know she is not completely comfortable but I am hoping she will be soon. 💖
We're in the low 90's all this week and I'm loving it cause I know winter will be here soon. I hate long cold winters. Geez somebody is walking around in the back ground on your property. Everything is looking good and thanks for sharing.
You are continuing great team work and progress, not just with the work but Gina’s adapting to her new role. I applaud getting all the value that you can from every piece of wood. The carport looks well integrated with the rest of the work, though I am really looking forward to the roof being covered.
Electrical standards and practices are different to those where I live. Your first guide is the local/national codes, second is your knowledge of the local wild life and third your desire for good practice on your property. Go for safety first and the best possible protection. Earthed metal conduit buried to the correct depth with warning tapes for buried runs, together with the protective devices supported by the rules and regulations. My neighbours have suffered from the attention of squirrels in addition to those other legendary biters and chewers.
I have been stunned at the light output, long life and tiny power needs of LED lights, both in mains and 12 volt applications though device availability is constantly changing. Do avoid the dodgy end of the market as some devices show serious safety short comings.
I did some LED shop lights in my garage. They simply plug into an outlet. If you wanted you could wire some outlets with a wall switch. Love them and low price.
If you want bright lights, these are what I recommend "Barrina LED T5 Integrated Single Fixture, 4FT"
Wondering about the new feeder. Is it going to be a problem in winter? It looks like metal. Could that endanger goats' tongues?
Oh, didn't think about that. Wet noses could be issues as well with as cold as it gets there. I can just imagine a wet nostril froze to that metal.
@@Staceysue64 HOPE NOT, THAT WOULD BE VERY SORE.
Al, You need to built yourself a good set of saw horses!!
I’ve been an electrician for 10 years. The easiest way for you to wire the barn is with Metal clade or flexible MC cable found at your big box stores. Use LED lights for brighter area and less power consumption
The new homestead additions look really good. I'm so glad Gina is able to be home now too. I agree , we should always invest in ourselves and try to make improvements! There are so many courses online for free or very inexpensive. Right now I'm taking a marketing course and will take a photography coarse next!
Former construction teacher at HS & love watching your videos. Have you given any thought to putting a light(s) on the outside of your barn. You could either control them from the house or put them on a timer so when those dark mornings come the light will come on making things just a little easier on you.
Yes, the days are definitely getting shorter. Darker earlier and light later. I hate it, but love it at the same time. lol You will definitely need light at the barn for this winter. I have no clue what to suggest, so will leave that up to everyone else. All I know is I'm looking forward to your winter time video's. The wood shed car port is looking good with the trim, can't wait to see the roof on both. So maybe baby goats again next year?! lol
You should check with your local building codes on Wiring a barn or any out buildings, They tell you if you need to place your wires in metal conduit.
Gina love watching you working on the buildings too. It's not all a mans world anymore. Keep posting the vids, really enjoy them!
Watching Al build is so relaxing. Love it!
What about making cider from some of the fallen apples.
Yes, get a grinder and poor them in! Get a workout and some gallon milk jugs. Have a party, more hands make light work.
Yes. I lived in an old farmhouse that had an ancient apple orchard. I made all sorts of stuff. The apples were small like Al's apples, but they were supercharged with delicious flavor. Sweet and Tart and Juicy. Everything I made came out so good. The small size was a hassle but it was worth all the effort. Apple juice, Cider, Jam, Tarts, Pies.
Maybe feed them to to the pigs at least before they go bad.
@@puirYorick They give apples to the pigs regularly
@@NiceAlex Thanks. I actually watched a video from two days earlier after seeing this one and there were some inside the pigs' area.
Figuro missed liv. So adorable when she carries Figuro, he's about as long as she is tall. Enjoyed your video!
A great weekend to all.
The car port looks great. Now,I know nothing about lighting but I do believe the goats deserve a chandelier, lol, just kidding LED for sure.Have a good weekend.
Rural King has nice LCD shop lights. My boss replaced one bad light fixture with one and they are bright!
I saw light weight mobile chicken tractors made with PVC piping and a tin roof on RUclips and thought of you. They would slide so much easier and should hold up better than wood.
Conjuit makes so much sense when you consider critters chewing through the wires. Protects you from possible fires from chewed on wires. The cost of the conduit would be cancled out with the added fireprotction.
I bought two LED shop lights on sale at Harbor Freight for $20.00 each. They work so well I only use one light at a time. You really want a LED with a color temp less than 6000. The blue looking lights are very hard on my eyes. If the light does not give you a color temp you can assume they are 6000 blue and not for extended use. (6000 color temp gives the most light output and they usually come from China.
william wallace 6000 degrees kelvin has lots of blue light! Very harmful to your eyes. Do a google search.
Gooooooood Morning Al ,
You and Gina sure make that trim work look easy .
I am about to watch after this Country View Aces on youtube he is about to wire up his barn for the goats and chickens it will be interesting on what he uses - Gina I can see some nice hanging baskets hung on a long hook on the side of the carport next spring they might be nice for a combo of flowers and vege like the little cucumber for pickles would look pretty and adding for the edit also cherry tomatoes
About Electrical. I was told I had to run conduit in the garage even if I drywalled it inside the wall. I preferred to run rigid conduit on the wall rather than in the wall.
Lighting Connections I chose to install switched outlets on the ceiling. This way I could move my lighting around and add one.
Install a switched outlet for a fan to install high in the rafters to blow air out the bay door. This blows the heat off the heat source before mixing with the barn air allowing the cooler air to flow off the ground.
Install a outlet for an electric garage door opener.
Garage door openers lock down the door and push the door tight on the seal especially the top. You are still missing this seal.
Do you want to save money on electrical cost? Balance your circuits. Calculate what will be used in the day, at night, summer or winter. It’s typical to run lighting on line 1 and outlets on line 2. Better to split the load per your calculations. Figure all the lights will be on at the same time so split half of them on line 1 and the other on line 2. To balance outlets run 3 wire to 2 gang boxes and run one outlet on line 1 and the other outlet on line 2. Running many circuits makes it easy by having the ability to move circuit breakers around.
Dig your trench to the shed/barn deep enough to run electrical and water. The water may be needed to put out fire. Do not run the water through a regulator. Run on full pressure. My house is on a 60psi regulator and the hose bibs outside are on 100psi city pressure. Electric sprinklers work better on city pressure. I’m running two 3/4” full flow ball valve bibs for instant “On” in case of fire. Might want to run an Ethernet wire and a com line for intercom. Would be nice to have WiFi at the barn for WiFi assisted cell phone calls.
Run a switched power on a 3-way from the house to the carport so the carport may be lit from the house.
Consider a Yard light on a pole.
Install a circuit that has the capability to run auxiliary power such as generator or solar.
A couple fire extinguishers would look cool and pray you never need them.
Al...I definitely would install some motion detector lights for the front of the barn at least. Also, maybe in addition to some standard lighting, it would be nice to have a couple of decorative type lanterns by the doors to enhance the charm of the building. Maybe some colonial maritime Onion Light fixtures or Boston box lanterns. We had those on a reproduction New England saltbox we built, and people loved them. But generally, you need a security light on a pole or over the garage door.
Good morning! I noticed it is starting to get darker earlier. Our weather here is still summer weather! We had a brief small tornado in the area yesterday. I'm so ready for Autumn.
Great to see the whole family work together on your work on the homestead. I suggest you run your wiring in either metal conduit or plastic conduit. Will keep the wiring safe and away from all of the mice/rats that just love to chew on the wiring. Go with LED lighting as I have done throughout my house and RV.
Apple cider and Apple butter would be great for coming weather.
Al, you are a very skilled craftsman. Gina will catch up, though, if you keep showing her the way! You two are such a good team. I enjoyed this one immensely.
Your storytelling is a great talent !
Gina and Al, what a positive view of family life. Take the good with the bad. Forget yesterday don’t worry about the future. God be with you and yours.
I’d recommend getting some led linkable shop lights. They are very bright, save on power and produce almost no heat.
Your guys are making good progress!
It's the firts time to I see a farm wihouth sheeps, cows and horses ( I'm argentinian)
LEDs are great! We switched completely to LED and cut our electric bill in half! For the goats side, I'd suggest making sure whatever style you get, make sure the light color and intensity is daylight. For the shop, if you're going to film inside, bright white has the least issues with your filming.
Enjoyed watching. You are a carpenter!
Looking good...
Have a good day🌻🌻🌻
Looking good you guys. What an improvement you have made this summer. God Bless your family.
As an electrical contractor, I would run all your wiring in galvanized electrical conduit (otherwise known as rigid conduit), use watertight fittings and connectors, along with weather type J boxes. We do both high and low voltage systems (basically anything with electrons going through it). Also, with LED lighting, I would look at LED type switches, not your regular switches, especially if you do dimmer switches.
It's amazing what you can do with leftovers. :) For the conduits, it's always best to use metal, so that rodents can't chew through and damage the wiring.
That's a clever item with the blue marker!
Everything looks so nice 🥰
Solar for the exterior!!! We have Solar and love it in blackouts. Love that it turns its self on at dusk. They come in big flood lights. Are first flood lasted for 3 yrs. Needed to change the bulb. Bright as a football field at a night game!! Got them all on Amazon, last ones are all motion detection around my goats. Love love love them 😁
Hello Happy Saturday Farmer AL, Cowgirl Gina & Lil Cowgirl Olivia!!! 👋👍❤️
It does look beautiful! You all always do such an amazing job! Blessings from NE Missouri!
My Grandma told me " Words are the only thing that stand between you and ignorance "
Thank you ...
I grew sunsweetss and Cherokee purple toms this year and to my surprise I had zero horn worms not even one. I'm guessing they were bred to be pest resistant. They were organic not sure if that made any difference. But I was stunned. I remember as a kid picking then off my mothers plants lol
I love it how Figaro backs up to you for a pet, ha!
Loving watching the build!!
Daylight led's is the best i think super bright make a huge difference, and run the wire in Plastic conduit..
Install the wire in pipe but run 2 pipes, one for future use. I installed 2 3/4" scheduled 40 pipe when I ran my electric.
