Hey everyone, I misspoke in the video: midday-afternoon was 11 AM - 5PM, not 6PM. My apologies!

Mike, as Zaka Zan had said in a comment, my hypothesis would be that people who can afford the time to exercise mid-day aren't obliged to work and might show some more healthy person bias.

I never have liked morning work-outs. It seems like my results are never as good as I'll achieve later in the day. And late work outs interfere with my sleep. So personally speaking, mid-day to afternoon is best.

Looked like the optimal split is 30% Morning, 50% MidDay and 20% Evening. Would be interesting to see Before and After eating.

Insulin resistance varies throughout the day and tends to be higher in the afternoon than in the morning. So afternoon exercise probably causes a bigger reduction in the long-term negative effects of high blood sugar. It is well known that insulin resistance is strongly correlated to all-cause mortality.

I feel sorry for the vast bulk of those who think exercising is "healthy". By that I mean lots of pounding on the pavement with jogging. Swimming, jumping rope and walking are in my view the best. Trouble is chlorinated pools are not good for you. The best way to exercise at home I believe is a few minutes of squats, hindu push ups, "jumping jacks", V-ups, with short intervals of skipping rope in between.

Thanks agin for this study. As in any study we must take caution in reading the final results which i have not read. Multiple times, i tried to bike in the afternoon but unfortunately to perform worse than the morning. Also i have to take account of the wind where i live because the afternoon is usually worse. Second, nutrition is not a variable that is accounted for. Not sure if people who do exercise are healthy or not. Many people are exercising just so they can eat more junk food or carbs which i believe are detrimental to long term health. Also many people eat too many carbs which may create lactic acid especially for endurance people like me whcih may impact mitochondria. These results could also be tainted by the fact that many have diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases. Therefore these variables have a different meaning for healtier people in general. This is my theory. For now this study is too general to be relevant and carries little weight for me anyway in optimizing my longetivity goals. Thousands of studies have praised exercise as a health and longetivity benefit and especially increasing NAD 😊.

Time of day for exercise also matters for diabetics. So there might be a correlation between blood sugar spikes and exercise times reduction in mortality. Dawn effect comes to mind as well as daily cortisol graphs, which show high levels in the morning and lower as the day progresses.

I tend to do 80% of my cardio exercise at night, when I actually have time to exercise. And I go to sleep quickly and sleep for 7-8 hours. So, does this suggest that my all-cause mortality is greater than if I didn't exercise at all? I struggle to believe that. Of course, it's only associational. I can't wait to see the mechanism.

What could explain the increased risk of mortality in the morning or night could be the fact that people tend to work during the midday, so people that go to work generally have more stressful lives and generally have more mortality risk. Those that were able to exercise during the day likely had more relaxing jobs or jobs that required significantly less work or didn't work at all which could likely be associated with a more financially stable lifestyle that also included proper nutrition and sleep etc. The median age was also 62 which would further elucidate the increased mortality if they still had to work at that age.

Love seeing anything that is related to circadian patterns. Like a lot of other comments said-lots of possible explanations for the results, but warrants further research.

At 69, I go with the flow of my Energy. I usually get two sets of Calisthenics and Kettlebell in each day and a couple 1 to 2 mile Walks. I'm a lot slower than I used to be but since I'm Retired I don't have to hurry and really enjoy slow walking to keep stress on my joints low. I do heavy Bikeing except in Winter. I can Crank on Pedals with low joint stress. TY for info.
