Yamaha hands down, without sweat. I tried a YTS 875EX just to see and it's my number 1 horn for years now. I then got an unlacquered YTS Z which plays so good. The Z is for the loud gigs and the EX is for everything else. Z projects like a VI, EX like a SBA. I Love my two Yamaha Tenors and my search is over with these two horns. I once had a Yani alto that I loved as well.
Nice to hear you playing those “trying new gear out” licks 👍🏽. Go pro perspective is quite helpful since we never truly “hear” our horns since we are behind the instrument 🎷
Both horns sound great. In many ways it comes down to which feels the best. Realistically only musicians do side by side comparisons. They audience in general can't tell the difference - they'll love how you sound either way :)
That's why i record every gear i test. And post it to youtube. It sounds diferent when you listen, than when you play. and maybe helps someone in the process.
I play a Yamaha yts 62 purple logo and I love it I have a selmer 80 series ll. But the yts 62 is my go to horn when gigging. I have played the yts 875, the 82z but I like the yts 62 the best.
I like the darker sound of the Yanni. But, man...the Yamaha is nice. It is a bit brighter. I would decide on how it feels behind the wheel, driving those saxophone ferari's.
Both horns are fantastic. Bottom line, practice everyday and the rest will take care of itself. Everyone is looking for the "magic horn" to make them sound like a good player. Micheal Jordan was who he was no matter what shoes he wore. Practice like a savage and you will get the gig.
Rock over London, Rock on Chicago... Sirvalorsax - the best of the best. The Poirot lick is great.. just what the world needs to get a 'concert' sax tone into the mainstream. Let's make a hit song with dark sax..
I own the Yamaha 62iiiS, with an unlacquered V1 neck, and it's an incredible instrument. The silver plating adds projection, and not necessarily brightness, in my opinion!
If you want a 62 consider a used Purple Logo or MK1 I love my MK1 alto and the tenor is really good. I love the MK1 tenor especially with a Boston Sax shop Heritage neck.
I wish i was advanced enough to understand your books Adrian! I'm a new player, I started on a Selmer TS400 which i was fighting with for it to behave. Tried a Yamaha 62III and it felt so much easier to play. I bought it.. $3,700 Australian. Which is reasonable for such a nice sax.
I had a similar experience with the Yamaha 62s. I tried both YAS-62III and YAS-62S. I liked the 62, but I loved the 62S. I ended up getting the 62S. Never regretted it!
@@federicom100 Well, to be honest, I can't really describe it. It resonated to me better. It just felt more alive. The regular YAS-62III was ok. I didn't find it quite moving. But when I played the YAS-62IIIS, I fell in love with it right away. Plus, I got it on sale. It was a win-win for me. The horns I felt that would win me over the YAS-62S were way over my budget. Thanks for the video, great as always. I've had a TWO2 for three years now. A/Bd next to my trusty SA80ll I played for 30 years like you're doing here. Yes, recording is important to help you compare, with mouthpieces too. The bronze base model works for me, and is the easiest tenor I've played and gets the biggest, juiciest sound...for me. Maybe not for everyone? Good luck in your search, have fun! That's what it's all about, right?🎷
There are some great sax's around, but I could never find something that I liked more than my Yanagisawa (Alto and Tenor) 880. Way back in high school (1980's) my music teacher had a Mark VI, it sounded ok, but I could not just adjust to the finger position layout of the sax. Some of the Yamaha's are good, but not enough to make me want to swap. But that is just my opinion. I wonder if the music store where you are trying the sax's have a Yanagisawa 9930? Might be worth a look. I think there is a modern equivalent now.
That Yanni TW020 is a bronze body model, with extra pillars. Its sound is very different from yellow brass body Yamaha 62. Yanni TW020 definitely has a more complex, more versatile sound-wise, so a player has an opportunity to profile the same instrument in many different ways.
I really really like having a high F# key. I use it to play a lot more than just high F#. A lot more. I haven't really considered them. The light weight is very appealing though
What is the difference in sound between YTS 62 and YTS 62S? Does the silver plate makes it darker or brighter? Is there a video I can watch to compare this? Thanks! Great video btw!
I think the silver definitely makes is brighter. It also balances the registers throughout the entire range of the horn including altissimo. If I get a chance to play my friend's 62S again, I'll be sure to record it and post it
Selmer. I own the reference 36. It was spending. In retrospect, I would have gone with the Yani or the Yamaha as the best sounding most cost effective Tenor. If I were looking for resale value, Selmer seems to be a collector item. But, if you are a working pro or teacher you gotta invest in money makers, not collectables.
Still on my beat up Yam 61 tenor.. since 1979. I know the newer horns are better..... but I'm not 5 grand better. Got rid of my 1950 SBA for 82z alto. The old Selmer was frail. Great comparison! Thanks so much for doing it. Was the YTS-62S you tested before also from the third generation? I did that comparison with altos: YAS-62S, YAS-62 and a YAS-62III. The YAS-62III was noticeable different while the differences between the YAS-62 and the YAS-62S were subtle. Hi! I agree with your conclusions, and yes - something with the EQ is not right, both sound very bright through these "zoom" microphones... I own both YAS-62 II silver and B-WO10, and although one is alto and the other is bari, I can imagine what you mean by "feeling cheap", I think the springs are slightly tighter on my Yanagisawa... To me, when I was looking at altos, and in some sense this carries along the entire lineup, Yangisawa's temperament seemed darker and more "classical" perhaps, while Yamaha sounds very "direct" (did you have the same impression?). I think this flatters the bari a lot (darker and more withheld). Yanagisawa's ebonite mouthpiece #5 is quite nice too, much more usable than the 4C ;-) I think both these tenors are great, and both are priced sensibly for what you're getting - you'll enjoy either one! Cheers from Israel!
bought a yahama YTS 61III new and witha a 5C yahama mouth piece, I dont know if it is a manufacturer's error or my embrochure, whenever i play the g2 (g with the octave key pressed) i get an overtone. it happens intermittently, it can happen when i play the note first or if i have a little rest before hitting the G. I workaround it by sluring to the G. Please any help?
Yeah, the 62 have better projection and purer core but the Yanagisawa is just more complex and musical. If you have a 61 to compare, probably this Yanagisawa would win still? I think it sounded darker and more complex than a 62.
Love the Yamaha! Fantastic horns, so free blowing and you have a great sound. But..Have you tried the Yamaha 82Z II tenor. Even more fantastic. Second hand more affordable. I prefer the 82Z II over my Selmer MVI
I am cross shopping these two saxes. Right now the 62IIIS is the best option but.... I'll try some more in the future. I'd love to check out the upcoming Supreme Tenor from Selmer
What is it that your prefer about the Yamaha and Yani over the Cannonball? I own a Yamaha YAS-23, and have a Cannonball Global Series tenor. I’ve played a Selmer Ref 54 and Yamaha 62 and Custom Z. The top in was better on them all than the Cannonball, but towards the bottom of the horn, I felt my Cannonball had them beat. Maybe it being because I was more use to it, but I didn’t feel the others were that much better regarding the price. I say all this as a non- professional player, which is why I was asking you as a pro level saxophonist.
Good question. I feel like Cannonball has stopped developing their "brand defining" sound and is focusing on too much on cosmetic attributes. They are fantastic at it but my taste are pushing me in a different direction. I'm also not bound by the limits of the cruise ship gigs and I can focus on my original music with my vision of sound.
In your playing they both sounded quite different. The Yamaha was brighter than the Yanagisawa which had more depth and a fuller sound. I have played Yamaha and Yanagisawa saxophones and going back and forth I prefer the Yanagisawa but I do like the sound of the Yamaha YAS 875EX. I find Yamahas have generally a brighter tone, especially the 82z and 62. I like the 875Ex Gold Plated alto tone a lot but it is quite expensive. As you said Yanagisawa's are very freeblowing. This is what I partly love about them. They don't get in the way, they just let you get on with playing.
Good comparison by a great player l search and look at all your videos sirvalor .But l must add you are now becoming like a lot of the regular you tubers now . An excellent presentation and after all of that no price. Please sir the price is always important especially when you live in a fifth world country. I live in Guyana South America.
It's more professional to omit the price because it the price is always changing and depends on where you are located. You will have to look up the cost of buying saxophones in Guyana.
Prices are always changing and they are different from different stores. In other countries, you are subject to constantly changing exchange rates also

It really comes down to personal preference. I'm mostly looking at the Silver plated Yamaha 62III more than any other sax now. It can be found at Pellegrino's Music Center in Canton, Ohio. I'll be posting a video advertising it very soon but if you want to get the jump on everyone else, here is the phone number. 330-498-8400
@@Sirvalorsax great, i dont live in the states, i live in europe, so i decided to get the yahama. I had issues with the last silver sax i bough due to off tone in winter so i decided to stick with gold plated one. thanks for the reply sir, do you offer private classes?
Yamaha sounds more fuller and balanced than Yana. Yana has too much sibilance like wasted air. Also more stable on your ultra altissimo. Get the V1 neck for the Yamaha.
The Supreme should be availabe where you are by now. Have you played it and made a video yet? I don't think the tenor is worth it's asking price. they're getting greedy asing an extra $5k CAD over what they were asking for their Ref 54 or 35 tenors.... I like the 82z, Yana wo33....
I haven't tried it yet. I'm looking forward to it, though. I think Selmer is pricing it against vintage Mark VI's. In that case, it is a much cheaper option. However, the Mark VI will most likely have better resale value in the future
The Yani sounds so thin and shrill compared to the Yamaha. That surprises me.... So for me, no doubt, I would choose the Yamaha. Much more core and character.
Have a look at (Keilwerth production): ruclips.net/video/21AWzFuIngE/видео.html May I add another aspect here: I am surprised how much craftmanship there is still involved in building a saxophone. I really doubt whether comparisons between brands are valid at all...🤔 And all the differences in sound and character, that are ascribed to different brand models... I am not sure!
What in the world did you mean when you said that Yamaha 62 felt “cheap”? The Yanni’s are incredibly well built, but they have no sound! Over-priced for what it is. Of all of the professional saxophonists playing Japanese saxophones, the ratio of Yamaha to Yanigisawa is what… 1000 to 1 1000 to 1? Yanigisawa saxophones are overpriced !
The tension in the springs of the Yamaha felt inconsistent from one note to the next which made it feel cheap compared to the Yany. Many people feel that the Yany's "have no sound" because of their free-blowing nature. The best way to try the Yany saxes are to bring a stiffer reed and maybe a more open tip mouthpiece. Because they are so easy to respond, people have a tendency to not push enough air through them to really get them to sing. In my opinion

bought a yahama YTS 61III new and witha a 5C yahama mouth piece, I dont know if it is a manufacturer's error or my embrochure, whenever i play the g2 (g with the octave key pressed) i get an overtone. it happens intermittently, it can happen when i play the note first or if i have a little rest before hitting the G. I workaround it by sluring to the G.
Please any help?
The horn may have a leak somewhere. It's a simple fix at your local music store
Good evening that definitely is a leak Somewhere from the a upwards maybe even the pad on the neck.
Good video as usual but is a brass v bronze horn a fair comparison !.
I am cross shopping these two saxes. Right now the 62IIIS is the best option but.... I'll try some more in the future. I'd love to check out the upcoming Supreme Tenor from Selmer
@@Sirvalorsax thanks for reply the copper in the bronze is giving tne sound folks are liking.
I have been a big admirer of yours for years .
The Yani sounds much better in my opinion
In other countries, you are subject to constantly changing exchange rates also
Good night just quote the price in United States dollars and let us in foreign calculate our exchange rates etc.
@@keithcampbell6806 $3000ish U$ for used 62s (that 62III will be $3500+) check out Saxquest in St Louis , Keith ( always a solid benchmark on that site for new and used) you wont get an 82Z.. or 875EX under $4000 anymore ( and probably not under $5000 ? )these past 2 years have seen horns go up... maybe even 20% (must be all the covid ..stuff)
Thank you very much. It is easy to quote the prices in US dollars. Jay Metcalf and Dr Wally Wallace always do.
Yanagisawa sounds better by far
I'm Alex I love your videos. I'm retired from Veterans Affairs and disabled I've been looking for a tenor sax to replace my conn shooting star... Are you selling your cannonball? If so I'm interested. I have alto sax a rare Dolnet made in France needs tuning some pads I can possibly trade it for a tenor saxophone
which mouthpiece did you use on each sax.thanks
what your say is right...
Do a test of this modern horns + Conn from 50th, Buescher True Tone or King Super 20 bro! Screw this new horns hahah:))
have a try yts61 🤭
Hey SVS, tried a Keilwerth SXR Black Nickel yet?
A friend of mine has one. I'll try to hit him up for a review
@@Sirvalorsax L.E.G.E.N.D
for price they are no match, help me here, i want to buy a professional sax, do i buy a new yahama 62 iii or go for a used sax at the same price range. thanks
It really comes down to personal preference. I'm mostly looking at the Silver plated Yamaha 62III more than any other sax now. Recently, the prices of almost all the other saxes have increased considerably. I am selling my Cannonball VR sax. I have a lot of accessories that come with it.
Yanagisawa sounds much better
What city do you live in, so that I can go by the music shop and try out various horns?
Have a look at (Keilwerth production): ruclips.net/video/21AWzFuIngE/видео.html May I add another aspect here: I am surprised how much craftmanship there is still involved in building a saxophone. I really doubt whether comparisons between brands are valid at all...🤔 And all the differences in sound and character, that are ascribed to different brand models... I am not sure!
Yamaha sounds brighter, Yani darker.
Strange, I hear it total opposite... Yani bright and thin, no core. Yamaha darker and with a good dark core.
What in the world did you mean when you said that Yamaha 62
felt “cheap”?
The Yanni’s are incredibly well built, but they have no sound!
Over-priced for what it is.
Of all of the professional saxophonists playing Japanese
saxophones, the ratio of Yamaha to Yanigisawa is what…
1000 to 1
1000 to 1? Yanigisawa saxophones are overpriced !
The tension in the springs of the Yamaha felt inconsistent from one note to the next which made it feel cheap compared to the Yany. Many people feel that the Yany's "have no sound" because of their free-blowing nature. The best way to try the Yany saxes are to bring a stiffer reed and maybe a more open tip mouthpiece. Because they are so easy to respond, people have a tendency to not push enough air through them to really get them to sing. In my opinion
Ive had 2 62s i love mine wouldnt swap it
Yanagisawa sounds much better
I don't think so. The Yamaha has so much depth and roundness of sound
