- Jim is continuing to expand his warbands for historical tabletop war games. After some hesitation, he decided to buy some packages of 28mm warriors direct from UK company Victrix Ltd. The experience is discussed in this video.

fun fact , aside of the named hero's (and their special sculpts) you could buy medival french knights and peasant foot soldiers from a historical game and play them as breton's in warhammer fantasy. it safes a ton of money.
Definitely the way to go.
We might have to consult the Elector Counts to determine if this is a good move or not…Summon the Elector Counts!!
@@DavGre breton's are not part of the empire. 🤭
Came for the minis. Stayed for the preamble.
Good to see you're in the pro-preamble camp, Rodrigo. Thanks!
Love Victrix minis. I use them for Lion Rampant and as D&D minis as well. Are we going to get a video of Jim building and painting some of those lovely Normans?
Waiting for the whole Crusades range to be available, but so far Victrix has gifted me with two complete armies for Lion Rampant, and built the core of another two (alongside Perry miniatures) for Sludge Warfare. I'm in awe, as I also collect GW... if you know, you know.
We'll see what we can do, Mark. Those Normans are pretty cool.
I recently got some WW2 1:144 guys and the detail and quality on them is so good. Priced very well too.
You're in Jim's head. He's ordering the same thing very soon.
Great fun to see your happiness opening up so many bags of sprues - and I recognised them from one of my favourite games stores: Mighty Lancer (at Bridlington on the coast, 40 miles east of York). I know they ship loads to the States, including Victrix, Reaper etc… Definitely check out their Northumbrian Tin Soldier minis and the RPG minis and dice advent calendars!
Mighty Lancer. Hmmm... We may have to do a game store visit video there.
Awesome. Grabbed some Victrix minis recently for my upcoming game.
They're a fantastic deal. I just ordered around 50 more a few days ago.
Hi, from the other side of the pond; Royal Mail here gets a lot of stick however they are very good at what they do, and I alway worry when good are not transported by them, and so far ( years and years ) have had no problem with them. I am currently looking at victrix early republican romans (4 bags will do for a historical army complete)...
Also Lion Rampant is a regular game for me and in addition to a good game (easy and quick to learn) the force are small (40-60 models) with different troop types per 6 or 12 models making painting quick and varied.
Furthermore I used to get the 'doll' syndrome from my family years ago, it stopped after I sold about half of my collection to buy my first car outright for cash.....
waiting to see some finished normans and saxons setting too!
Only just found this video, but perhaps you were not aware that Monday, the 27th of May was "Spring Bank Holiday" here in the UK this year: a national "day off". So it wasn't a "business day" and it is very unlikely that Victrix had any staff that day to process your order.
Victrix has always been great for me, their hoplites filled out my town guard for dnd for most of a campaign.
Agreed! The hoplites could fill in for a number of minis in D&D campaigns.
Thanks for the video! Victrix has a lot of great stuff!
Glad you liked it Mark.
Check out Badger Games out of Wisconsin. They have a HUGE stock of Historical minis. Brigade Games is also another good place to look. As for rules, Saga is great. I also recommend Blood Eagle by Ministry of Gentlemanly Warfare. Brigade and Badger carry Blood Eagle. Victrix is one of the "Gold Standard" miniatures companies. Gripping Beast and Fireforge are also really good. Keep up the great content fellas!
Thanks, BZ. Blood Eagle is on my list as well.
Really enjoyable video. I’ve ordered many 28mm from Perry and Warlord (European medieval knights, Japanese samurai), and loved them. Now, I’m thinking of a third army option: Normans, so thank you for that possible future endeavor! But, looking around Victrix after your video, I just ordered a WWII starter combo of Brits vs Germans 144th scale, two playable forces to try out the game. Main rules set is sold out, but that can wait until after assembly and painting. I’m a big WWII buff, and I think I’m going to highly enjoy this set. If so, I’m sure to expand to more armor, different forces, etc. So, thank you for introducing me to Victrix! Much appreciated, keep up the stellar work!
We're glad the video was useful to you! I'm also going to be ordering WWII items very soon. I'm just getting started with more modern TTWGs and, of course, need quite a few more soldiers. Thanks for the kind words!
I'm really thinking about getting some of their miniatures. Their sculpts look so good. I almost wish they would dip into some fantasy stuff a little bit. Lol
I've found myself wishing the same thing!
I live in Australia and have bought direct from Victrix many times. They ship quickly, arriving in 7 to 10 days. Postage is cheap compared to shipping anything from the US. I find postage is a usually twice as much as from UK.
And we're still not sure why US postage is so high. The service is definitely not as good.
Hey guys - great content. I love Victrix miniatures a lot, and I own quite a few. Another company you might want to check out is Wargames Atlantic. They are made, and ship from, the USA (they relocated here from an overseas factory a few years ago). Great figures, nice price, and a really cool company to deal with.
Thanks, Professor. I haven't seen anything from WA up close but they've been recommended quite a bit. I'll be placing an order soon. Did you order direct from them, or from an online retailer?
Remember, Warhammer Fantasy is just the Medieval/Early Renaissance European period with a fantasy theme added. The basic human miniatures are simply historical figures "with the fancy Warhammer detailing that adds nothing to the game but plenty to the price". Also remember that only the commander's immediate troops are likely to have the exact same equipment and "uniform" every other unit would usually be different in dress or weapons although fighting in the same style. Historical miniatures wargames allow for this by NOT restricting figure choice even when associated with a particular miniatures manufacturer.
Just in case you needed more wargames ive heard that “quars war” is a fun and cheap one, then there is also “the forbidden psalm” which is mork borg(and therefore pirate borg) compatible skirmish game. And then there is gaslands for twisted metal/mad max car games. These are what i plan on getting into as my first steps into modeling, mostly because of the price.
Hah! You're killing me Nicholas! I've already got The Silver Bayonet and Black Seas waiting in the wings. Now I have to dive into The Forbidden Psalm and Gaslands as well. Thanks for letting me know about them!
Those cavalry models are worth gold. Trust me, those extra bits WILL come handy.
Just finished up a Norman cavalry warrior. Really enjoyed turning it out.
Norman must be a really popular guy having all those miniatures named after him. nyuk, nyuk, nyuk. Great video guys, and cool change of pace. Why 28 mm though? Why don't they make them in 30 mm? I like nice round numbers with a 0 at the end. Seriously, I am curious how the size of the figures is decided on by the companies.
A lot of the old 80s minis were 25 / 28 mm. Going for retro I guess.
Hey FF! I was trying to figure this out just a few days ago and couldn't find a definitive answer. I think there's some cultural inertia involved from much older war game miniature production at the 25mm size. But, manufacturers kept slowly increasing size of figures to make them easier to paint and it seems like 28mm was arrived at a number of years ago. That size creep continues today with a lot of 28mm minis actually getting close to 35mm. So, things that are said to be 28mm range in scale from 1:56 to 1:72.
@@theoldwarlock Thanks for the surmise. It makes sense. Ending in 5 works. I used the old lead (pewter?) miniatures for D&D, but never thought much of the size. And I was terrible at painting. Figured it was just a bunch of blokes sitting at the pub pounding down bitters and decided 28 mm was the perfect number. Now it seems that as they got older and their eyesight got worse, they made them bigger to be easier to paint. LOL I can see the Old Warlock with his 5 horse hair brush and giant magnifying light squinting at the new Normans as he paints them. 😉
@@FinieousFingers1976 I see Old Warlock spending hours painting his 28mm Normans from Victrix so that he can put them all in a column and strafe them with his Eduard 1/72 scale Fokker DR.1 :)

@@ChrisField-eg8lb In the 70's I was putting together those old plastic models of airplanes, cars, and ships as a kid. Sniffing glue and paint the whole time because we didn't know any better. Explains a lot of things now ...
Fun video. Kind of makes me want to get back into wargaming. Jim, what rules set are you currently running, or what do you recommend for traditional medieval wargaming?
Hey DDM! I'm just now getting into this realm and I'm focusing on Saga and Lion Rampant. But I want to start with some smaller models for more traditional TT wargaming and would like to use Chainmail and also check out Little Wars which was writtten by HG Wells in 1913.
I'm looking at getting some Dark Age Victrix minis to play Ravenfeast. It's a free, simple starter-friendly ruleset. You should check it out!
My local game shop here in the Twin Cities carry a good range of Victrix.
Do you know if they sell online?
@@theoldwarlock Not sure, but I can ask when I'm there tomorrow. Otherwise, I'm an old retired guy that wouldn't mind sending you what you need if they carry it.
Love those 20% off deals when you hesitate to buy something. I totally might get a few of these . Looks cool.
They also do 10% from time to time. I'd probably buy with that as well.
Ahhh...timekeeping journal...hallmark of a genuine D.M.
😁
It's the third hemisphere of my brain.
just dusted off my 3e Chainmail booklet...
Righteous!
@@FinieousFingers1976 it's a game of inches.
@@ChrisField-eg8lb Yes, yes it is. I had to go dig in my box of old gaming books and my 3e 6th printing, August 1978 is all in inches. LOL For some reason I also have a 3e 7th printing, April 1979, but I think I "borrowed" that from my younger brother. Don't tell him.
It may be time for a deep dive into Chainmail.

Warhammer is a UK game. And it is of course crazy expensive. Nice to see some aternatives for miniatures. These days just use minis for D&D.
Seems a lot of people are using minis like Victrix for the bulk of D&D minis.
Games Workshop actually started out making things for D&D until they had a fallout with TSR and started to make their own IP instead. They were kinda unofficially known as D&D UK among gamers way back. Some of the stuff they made were pretty good as I remember it,
What is in the box? Alex referencing the movie Seven is very disturbing, 😭 Great movie. Then anything with Morgan Freeman in it is exceptional.
I have to agree.
Come on guys, an unboxing video, and you won't even touch the box for 15 minutes?
What no Norman sappers?
Gonna have to make 'em when I adapt the rules.
15 mins of waffling on 😂
In the box is a Cat, but the real question is: is the cat alive or dead? Funny to me how you are returning to the roots of TTRPGs, the Humble Table Top War Game. : O
I played many hours of Avalon Hill wargames which definitely led me to RPGs. Never had the chance to actually do lead figure wargames, etc. back in the day. Finally decided that now's the time to do kind of a modern sand table thing.
@@theoldwarlock For me AH and SPI. Besides Chainmail, I played a lot of Sword and Flame (British-Colonial Africa Campaigns, Zulu, Egypt etc.) Have a blast, you've earned it.
Did you ever play Battletech? It's not historic, but fighting the succession wars with centuries old warbots piloted by barely literate Mechwarriors can't be beat.
No, but I've seen reference to it everywhere. Will have to check it out.
@@theoldwarlock the "Battletech A Game of Armored Combat" box set has the standard rules, scenarios, 8 mechs miniatures, and two maps. It's a great intro.
Where's Schroeders cat?!
Here's a thought - were the miniatures I bought both animate and inanimate before I opened the box?
Curses. That's another pile of plastic to get. I've been coveting those Normans for a while now and this was the final straw. And they've got a sale on. It's like a perfect storm.
Sorry Bob. I didn't want to suffer the mountain of gray shame alone. And don't feel bad, that dang sale caught me as well.
60 soldiers ...wow ! ....🤪🤪🤪👍
Yeah, you really can't beat it.
3d printer goes Brrrrrrr
