n episode 302 of The Physical Performance Show Brad Beer shares a conversation with Olav Aleksander Bu. Triathlon Norway Sports Scientist & Elite Coach sharing around ‘The Science of Triathlon’ in this Expert Edition.
Olav Aleksander Bu, has been working extremely close with Kristian Blummenfelt over the last 5 years post the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and despite his hectic schedule, made time to share the many learnings he had from his career to date around Triathlon Science.
There is so much information in this episode, it’s little wonder that Norway are leading the world of Triathlon across all distances from sprint events through to standard distance events, 70.3’s and now into the Ironman domain. You’ll be astonished at just how fast Olav Aleksander Bu believes Kristian Blummenfelt can go and you’ll have your mind expanded around what is possible when it comes to the science and application of that science into training, development and performance of athletes.

“Your 1-hour power will always be lower than your 30 minutes’ power, your 30-minute power will always be lower than your 15-minute power and so on.”
“Energy availability and having a program to burn a lot of calories is important.”
“Aesthetics has nothing to do with performance.”
“Try to make the best out of bad situations.” - Best Advice
“Get out and run for 10 minutes every day.” - Physical Challenge

@42:37 So Olav represents the future of professional trainers, running the lab and individualize training sessions: Scientific tailor-made training. Impressive!

will continue to be a rare breed. most "trainers" don't really understand science from biochemistry up let alone have the capacity to innovate new science-based training interventions.

This is the genius behind Gustav and Kristian. No doubt about that. Without him they would not be that sucessfull.

"Don't lie on the coach all day, when the tough days hit you."
Was that some kind of Freudian slip? "No, Kristian, I won't hold you like a baby while you nap. 😂

36:50 not necesseraly in all cases. if vo2max here just represents the mitochondrial capacity then yes but otherwise the vo2max is always a combination from the whole aerobic system & the glycolosis. so if mitochondrial capacity stays the same but glycolytic flux gets reduced by training interventions then vo2max or lets say power @ vo2max or even power @ w/kg @ vo2max will also get down in many / most athletes but the fuel gap would not be filled with the usage of more glycogen , their glycolosis would provide less pyruvate for the aerobic system at a given intensity which would lead to the decrease of vo2max and they would be more dependend on other fuel sources like fatty acids for example which would have wanted or unwanted effects on their race performance in the end. Or Muscle Protein. Or Glutamin. Or Ketones.

If Kristian's fat metabolism wasn't perfect (needed to many carbs at low intensities) how did they train to improve that, especially without fastet training of which Olav is obviously not a fan of
