Ariens Snowblower Wheel Drive Types & Trigger Lock Repair

- In this video I discuss the various drive systems you can find on Ariens snowblowers. The trigger lock mechanism is focused on here.
Customer brought this Ariens Deluxe 28" machine in and was not able to shift the left wheel into neutral. Typically the problem is rust and/or a maladjusted spring. This one wound up being rust preventing the splines from engaging with the wheel axle.

perfect video. quick and informative. i did this very thing for a customer a few years ago, now he says it's doing it again. couldn't remember what exactly i did so this video helped refresh my memory before i drive out there to work on it.
I had the same problem happen today. I googled the problem and your video had me back up and going in no time! And thanks for keeping it short and sweet. Too many videos are way too long winded.
Thank you for watching!
Thanks a ton for this! I recently got a free, but non-running and very neglected Deluxe 28. After getting it running and going over everything, it was obvious it had rarely if ever been serviced, so both wheels were rusted on, then the sleeve with the brass bushings (called the "axle clicker" in the parts list) was seized onto the axle. I even managed to snap the lock arm lever while...enthusiastically getting the right side wheel off...but I did eventually get both wheels off.
That differential/clicker mechanism was Greek to me until I saw your video. The part starting at 1:57 showed exactly how it's supposed to work.
Fast forward a day, after much more struggling, I got the sleeve removed, cleaned all the rust off, braised the lock arm lever back together, packed everything back together with Lucas red and tacky grease. Now this old beast works like new! I'd have never figured out how that mechanism worked without your video!
Thank you, it was great!!! No BS, just professional advice!!!
Something else to note when I was adjusting mine. If the cable is too tight when you adjust it, it won’t allow enough tension on the return spring making the locking mechanism not work correctly. I over adjusted the cable on mine and the diff lock would work 30% of the time. Loosened the cable a few turns and now works great. Make sure everything is nice and clean/lubed up. Thanks for the great video and hope this helps someone!
Well, this changed my mind about the trigger steering system. When it works, it works great. When it doesn't work, it is a pain in the but. Solid axle works just fine, if you can handle it. It is less maintenance, too.
This is the lock/unlock mechanism on my 1332LE, so far it's been working fine but I'm planning to do some maintenance on the machine in spring. I'll be sure to lubricate that lock/unlock mechanism. Thanks for the tip.
Thanks for the tip! My husband just snowblowed the driveway with one wheel working, after this video he's all set!!
Glad to hear! Its a very common issue!
Thanks Gary. I opened up the back and lubed the mechanism, following your example. It's -20 celsius today, so once I fired 'er up, I lifted up the back to get the wheels spinning and grease mixed in there. Seemed to do the trick. Thanks for putting this up.
Glad it helped!!
Thank You. Exactly what I needed. Both wheels working now.
Thank you and glad we were able to assist!
Great video! Just what I wanted to learn about.
Thanks for the explanation as this just happened to me in the last snow storm. Thank god the snow was light enough for me to shovel. I plan on checking it out as soon as I can get a warm enough day here in NY. Tomorrow should be good. Thx again for the explanation. Hopefully that is my problem as only the right wheel was engaged and kept pulling to the left.
And sure enough, that was the problem. The cable was loose as well as it needed to be greased up. Works great now. Ready for next snow fall (even though I’d rather not have to use it ):-)
That you very much you were very informative I didn’t know what that was until you explained it 👍 thank you!
Had a similar problem and your video was really helpful! Many thanks👌
Great to hear!
Thank you! The issue I had was that I took the wheel off to have a flat fixed, not realizing there’s a pin in the axle that fell out and I didn’t realize.
Merci beaucoup votre information m'a aidé à régler mon problème maintenant ma souffleuse va parfaitement!!
Another thing to note, as I've run into this problem on occasion with my Ariens Deluxe 28, is that sometimes the outer piece on the outer grooved piece in the trigger lock system can shift off of the tensioned bar on the secondary shaft, which you can see directly above it at 2:48. The two pieces, in this circumstance will not separate to activate/deactivate the trigger lock system.
Coming back with a follow up a comment because the repair did not work on mine. After some research I realized that the problem was the short left axel. So I had to replace with part AP52101100 "Axle, clicker w/bushings". Anyway, video was really useful and help me to fin the issue, so thanks again.
Awesome glad it helped out!
I bought a 927 LE last year for snow removal and worked fine for the first storm but the rest of the season it was a complete pain in the ass to use cuz some driveways were steep and hardish ice so it wouldn’t go straight. And loading it on my scooter hauler. I couldn’t find anything on the web at the time. I was planning on welding the axle together before I seen this. I haven’t looked at it yet but now I know how it works at least. Hoping I can just get it to lock and unhook the cable. Nice video
Update. I ended up drilling a hole and putting a pin in the axle. So much better
My exact model and issue...thanks, now I know how to solve it.
Very informative - was diagnosing the same set up because the lock wouldn’t hold. Did the lubrication and cable adjustment to no avail. Turns out the compression spring had gone bad. Put in a new spring - good as new!
Mine goes in and out fine but as soon as drive has tension it pushes spring back and doesn’t stay locked. Did the new spring fox that.
@@jeremyderouard8927 Yes, that was my situation - new spring solved the problem. Old spring was too weak.
Thank you so much. Solved the problem for mine.
Great video, thank you...problem solved....👍👍👍
THANK YOU!!!!!
My Honda hss928 is tending to move to the left when I go straight. Has these bike handles. Tire psi was 6.5 psi so I brought it up to 15 psi.
I have what appears to be an older version of the one your working on here, I found the tension spring laying on the bottom cover. But mine doesn’t have the bolt or even a hole where a bolt would be that the tension spring anchors to. You have any idea where the tension spring is supposed to be anchored, I’m about to drill a hole and put a bolt in like yours.
i had this problem and originally i thought it was this lock assembly but it turned out to just be the Woodruff key on the wheel sheered off, so just make sure to check that because i had someone come look at it and all it was is that key sheered. Just take the wheel off and you will see it, doesnt hurt to look!
Amazing what a little grease or oil will fix!
This was my first time working on a snow blower. Your video, and others, helped me replace all the belts, remove the wheels, lube everything, replace sheer bolts, adjust cables...
But the biggest mystery was the differential. It was not working. So after about 15 minutes of examining the mechanism and reviewing your video, I discovered the "locking" mechanism (spring loaded arm shown on left side) of the ratchet was not in the right position. It was rotated approximately 180-degrees from where it should have been. It appears the Pros at the shop did not assemble it correctly.
Thanks for the help.
Apologies for the late reply but thank you so much for watching glad we were able to help out!!
Thank you
Thank You!
You're welcome!
This helped mine engage and disengage perfectly now except when locked it won’t stay locked and when and pressure is put on wheel I can see it trying to separate and pushes large spring on axle back so it won’t lock fully. Any suggestions?
Interesting. Some models anchor the holding spring on the intermediate shaft instead of it's own special anchor point. I wonder which came first.
Ariens has had a half a dozen different traction aid systems over its history. Some very short lived, some very long lived. Probably the longest lived was their manually lockable open differential which lasted from at least the '70's to the '90's.
This one wouldn't be bad, but there is no way to make it low maintenance. You'd have to lube and inspect it every year to keep it operational in such a harsh operating environment.
You are exactly right. I'm betting that is why we only saw this drive system for a few years and then it was abandoned due to the high rate of service calls on it.
Hi Gary, Thanks for the informative video regarding the trigger system. In my case when I trigger the unit to free wheel, sometimes it will slip right back into the 2 wheel positrac. There is never a problem shifting back from free wheel to positrac. Should I be looking at a cable adjustment?? Thanks
Hey Mitch so sorry for the late reply. Yess look at the cable adjustment. Also clean the outer and inner axle if the movement of the gears look restricted. Rust can def do that.
I had the same problem with rust and corrosion where the axels locks, but the free wheel will barely turn. I’ve soaked it with penetrating oil but it won’t turn freely. Will the inner or the outer portion of the axel come off with the wheel? I don’t see a small clip at the end of the axel shaft.
Thank you. It was always pulling left and the left wheel would not engage. Now I know how to fix it.
I was hoping so much that your video would help but I guess my snowblower is a bit older style, I have the same set up but on the left side there is 2 plastic wheels, the inside one presses against the outer one when I squeeze the handle, but it is not working right. My question is both wheels are frozen to the axle will the function not work properly in this case
Correct the inner and outer axles need to move freely unless they are engaged with the splines.
I have the same problem but that stationary gear turns with the ratchet gear on mine when I hold it it ratchets correctly
Sounds like rust. Something is binding. Make sure the cable does not have too much slack either. The two springs holding the ratchet need to have some tension on them.
Can you do a complete video for this same machine on how to remove axle? I can’t get the damn shift gear to slide along the spline to hook up with the higher tooth.. I think it’s rusted shut and thought taking the axle off could help me clean and lubricant all parts.. maybe? Thx
Apologies for the late reply. I do not have this machine anymore as it was a clients.
Gary . . . simple question. I just bought new wheels with tires for my Ariens EFI. The order was separate so I'm waiting for the second wheel. The wheel that I received is correct. However, there is an arrow on the sidewall of the tire. That arrow points counterclockwise which makes sense to me. Correct me if I am wrong. This is a left wheel and the arrow should point in forward direction, correct?
Sorry for the delay. Yeah usually snow tires are directional. So the arrow would have to point forward.
Currently working on this exact issue, it doesn't rachet freely, seems bound up. You mentioned that you greased the rachet mechanism, if possible what kind of grease did you use, to deal with rust would fluid film be I'll advised in that location.
Thanks in advance!!!
I used marine axle grease. Best stuff for the given application.
@@sgsmallenginerepair6780 thank you! That makes sense. I didn't have any grease on hand, so I hit it with some fluid film to (hopefully) loosen it up over night. Going to go check it
@@emd1405 def a good initial measure, but grease is needed for sure. Best of luck and thank you for watching!
How can I remove the shaft or mechanism to remove rust from the shaft? Mine must be rusted open since the left wheel won’t engage and the lever won’t move when I squeeze it.
The entire axle would need to be removed on the left side it's an axle within an axle basically. It's a decent amount of work but once you remove all the rust make sure both axles are coated in grease to slow down any oxidation and then reassemble.
I bought a used model of the same type in your video, however the trigger handle is completely missing along with the associated spring. do you know where i could find the parts to reassemble the system?
I would check out partstree.com for the schematics and the exploded view of the mechanism. From there you can get your part numbers and order from them or from your local small engine shop.
Can you swap out the axle for a solid axle to delete the turn assist? i think its a pain and ive fixed it about 4 times but it still finds a way of coming undone. Other than that I love my 1332
I haven't researched the possibility.
On my Deluxe 30, when the lever is activated, the cable turns the inner ratchet collar but the outer piece turns with it, in unison. What is supposed to prevent the outer piece from turning when the inner one does?
It sounds like the splines are rusted and the entire mechanism would need to be disassembled cleaned and then greased
Thank you. Maybe so, but all parts move freely. It works if I hold the outer piece in place. I bought the machine new and this feature has never worked predictably.
Hi and thank you! 2:55 mins into the video the longer spring is what broke on me last winter. I in-loopped one round and re-thread through the hole on the tension wire. Snow storm yesterday in New York and the second I was done plowing my property, guess what? Weals stopped moving! I need a new long spring. Would you know the name/Part # ? I can’t find my owners manual. Thank you very much. Love your video!
Hey! Can you get me your model# and serial# range (not the exact serial unless its out of warranty) Its on the rear of the machine above the belly pan. I can lookup the part# you need
Hi and thank you. Model number 921022. Serial number 064235
Hi Sir. Any luck?

@@sgsmallenginerepair6780 Da Man thx!
Is there a way to tell which mode you are in while using it? Or do you just have to realize it's pulling to one side / isn't turning easily?
Life the wheels off the ground to see if left is spinning or not when drive engaged.
well both my blowers are not spinning . That’s my excuse to stay home from work🤣
Do I need to empty the fuel before turning mine upside down like yours? Thank you in advance for your help
Ariens Delux 28
You need to run the engine dry first. Then shut off the fuel valve and put a piece of plastic like saran wrap under the fuel cap. This will keep the fuel from spilling out.
@@sgsmallenginerepair6780 Thank you 🙏
@@sgsmallenginerepair6780 don't you shut the fuel valve first so you can run the engine dry??
@@blueplasma5589 yes, but it doesnt truly leave the carb dry. There is still some in the bowl. Either you can drain it if the bowl has one, or you take the bowl off to empty that little bit of fuel left the engine can't burn. To avoid all that work i run it dry then use can ethanol free fuel. Put some of that in and run for 15 minutes, then turn off fuel valve. No gumming, ready to go for next season.
No spring on the shaft and the unit looks to be two plastic pieces can't get it to work 2007 ariens pro 26 inch with 9.5 hp
They may have changed the setup a bit for that model. What is your model and serial number RANGE, no need to give me the exact serial if its still under warranty
@@sgsmallenginerepair6780 It is a model 926014 and serial no. 000742
Isn't it better to have both wheels driving it?
Correct yes both wheels should be engaged when using the snowblower. Posi traction is key. The only time it makes sense to disengage one wheel is to make 180° turn. Modern Ariens snowblowers now employ a limited slip differential gear inside that allows this function to happen automatically.
So the problem was just rust?
Yes rust was the main issue
Lock it in and cut the cable so it never works again.
How do you permanently lock it in I tried disconnecting cable and leaving locked but pushes back out as spring will not hold it in.
@@jeremyderouard8927 I removed the springs and eventually tack welded the tom halves together.
