Burt Reynolds recorded his goodbye as Charlie after finding out Judith Barsi had been killed. He asked for a closed set, just him and the sound recorder, and it took him all day to record his lines. They had to re animate the ending afterwards as he couldnt make it through his original lines without breaking down. 😢
He also requested her picture. They said he held to it throughout the recording. Every word he said was Burt saying goodbye to Judith. What more heartbreaking was that Judith and her mother had no other relatives so they were burried together but no headstones were made for them. Its not until 16 yrs later that fans came together to locate their burials and made a proper headstone. They were so close to being free from their murderer. Judith's mother already secured a safehouse to escape from the monster. She was just too late.
It’s hard to watch All Dogs Go to Heaven or The Land Before Time without thinking of Judith. It reportedly took Reynolds over 63+ attempts to record his final lines as Charlie, where he says goodbye to Anne-Marie, knowing that the young actress who voiced her, Judith Barsi, had been murdered by her own father. For Reynolds, it wasn’t just about delivering a performance-it was about saying a heartfelt, real-life goodbye to Judith. During the recording process, Reynolds requested to work in a private studio with only the sound engineer present. He performed his lines while looking at a photo of Judith, struggling to get through the scene without breaking down. His emotion was so raw and intense that they lost count of how many takes it took for him to record the dialogue, as each attempt ended in tears. In the end, the best take they had still captured Reynolds choking up, and they had to redraw parts of the animation to fit the emotion in his voice. Judith Barsi’s story is truly heartbreaking. To this day, her tragic fate brings tears to my eyes, especially when I hear her sweet, innocent voice in *All Dogs Go to Heaven* and *The Land Before Time*. Both films hold a special place in many hearts, but knowing the story behind Judith’s life makes them almost unbearable to watch without shedding tears. The most gut-wrenching part is how her last role, Anne-Marie, was all about a little girl longing for a loving mommy and daddy, while in reality, her own father was the one who took her life. Rest in peace, Judith Barsi. May you finally have the peace and happiness you deserve in life. I like to imagine that she’s now free, surrounded by love, perhaps playing with other children and reunited with her mother in heaven. One day, I hope to meet her there and tell her just how much her performances meant to the world. Rest well, sweet Judith. 🕊️ Rest in peace, Judith Barsi. Our concrete angel. Yep, yep, yep! 🕊️❤️
I teared up reading this cause of how much it hits me and really made me realized why I never went back and watched those movies. Not in a bad way, but it has so much emotions and dark meanings behind what happened to the beautiful young actress. She definitely left a smile on my face when I was younger BEFORE I knew what really happened to her when I became an adult. R.I.P young angel! 😢
Judith Barsi was chosen first to sing "Soon You'll Come Home" but would breakdown into tears due to her troubled home life. The filmmakes didn't want to push her into doing it which is why Lana Beesin does the song. "Love Survives" was dedicated to the late Judith Barsi. May she and her mother rest in paradise.
“Though he may not have ever said it, his philosophy is that children really can handle anything as long as you attach a happy ending.” - IMDB profile . It’s true. Don bluth never underestimated a child’s intelligence, and he believes any animated can be as dark and grim as you won’t, so long as you end it on a happy note. His reasoning was that children should always know life isn’t always harsh- that things CAN get better and work out for everyone. Movies like that leave a much bigger impact.
Hearing Judith Barsi's voice again after all these years breaks my heart, that goodbye scene always shatters me especially when you understand the context behind it, may the sweet angel, and her mother be at peace. I can never watch All Dogs Go To Heaven or The Land Before Time again, but its nice to see others react to wonderful films that made many childhood memories special.
hearing about how the voice actor was saying goodbye to the little girl and how many takes he needed to do for that scene without breaking down was just heart breaking. her lines were already recorded before she passed away. He said it was one of the hardest things he had to do in his life to finish this movie.
I watched this all the time growing up, not knowing how emotionally destructive it was. Now, at age 25 i cannot even listen to the audio from that last scene because i start legit bawling. The story, the music, the terrible fate of the angel who voiced Ann-Marie....i can barely bear to watch people react to the movie.
Fun facts that may not be fun During Charlie's goodbye to Anne-Marie, they weren't in the studio at the same time, as Judith Barsi recorded her lines before anyone else, and Charlie's dialogue was recorded after Judith's death, eo Burt Reynolds asked for a photo of Barsi so he could feel like he was really talking to her. Also, "Love Survives" (the end credits song) was basically only added to honor Judith Barsi. It wasn't originally in the film
8:22 “Charlie’s too good of a doggy to go somewhere other than heaven.” 3 minutes earlier in Charlie’s “heaven file”- Greedy, low-life, backstabber, loan shark, lust for money, jaded, heedless, etc
It's funny you pointed out Anne-Marie's design as she was inspired from Snow White. R.I.P to Charlie (2/11/36-9/6/18), Itchy (8/1/33-5/4/09), Carface (1/6/30-5/25/90), Killer (1/13/31-5/25/07) and Anne-Marie (6/6/78-7/25/88).
If you haven't seen it, I think you would really like The Secret of NIMH. It's a little terrifying, but the animation is gorgeous and the heroine is unique and wonderful.
Loni Anderson, who voiced the collie, was married to Burt Reynolds, who voiced Charlie and Ken Page, who voiced the gator, also voiced Oogie Boogie in The Nightmare Before Christmas.
On Oct 3, Don Bluth posted this anecdote about this film on X -- "Burt Reynolds was the voice of Charlie the dog. When he first came to the microphone he made up what he called, “My wonderful dog voice." He was very proud of it, but it was awful. Then I called Dom DeLuise to see if he could suggest how to get Burt not to use his dog voice. Dom laughed and said, "Put me in the movie, call me Itchy. I can fix this." In the recording studio Dom and Burt sat side by side and when Burt started to use his dog voice, Dom looked at him and said, "What the hell is that, you're embarrassing me. Just be Burt, the audience loves Burt." And that is the reason Itchy, Charlie's wonderful friend is in the movie. - Don"
That just shows that you have a gentle soul with how emotional you were, I know how you feel as I get emotional also when watching movies, reading or playing games and losing a character that I get attached to.
Judith Barsi voicing Anne-Marie was notable to me not just due to the tragic end she faced in 1988, but because her prior film The Land Before Time was where I recognized her first because that was my childhood movie growing up in the 90s. I never owned a copy of All Dogs Go to Heaven as a kid, but my cousin owned a VHS copy, so that’s how I learned about this movie. For a classic Don Bluth film, it’s pure nostalgia!
"Did they just murder a dog in a child's cartoon" I'm 42 years old and I still remember the existential dread and shock from this movie's impact in my childhood. I hesitated to even watch this reaction because I'm finding that it's possible I never healed from that trauma and It's kinda tough to want to face it again. To top it off, I have 5 german shepherds now and 2 of them are getting on up there in age. But I'm going to push through it. You're one of my favorite react channels and I trust you with this.
Yeah, this movie can be a tough watch. I didn't realize it was going to be so heavy. I appreciate you watching my reaction! Give your dogs a big hug and extra love from me! They sound very loved. ❤️
This movie makes me think of Savannah Smiles. Shes an adorable little girl who runs away from home and gets tangled up with a couple of wanted men. I highly recommend it. Its one of the only movies that would make me cry when I was younger.
I normally watch all your reactions Jax, but my yellow Labrador Bennie passed away suddenly not too long ago. I absolutely cannot watch any movie like this now :(
I don't like being able to say that I saw this movie 30+ years ago when it came out, but I did😂 Thanks for being unusually sweet as usual and bringing back a loving classic🙏
It's a Don Bluth movie. To explain what that means, Don Bluth once said that you can show a kid nearly everything as long as there is a happy ending. I'm too minds about that, but any kind of story has to move you one way or the other. It doesn't matter if it makes you want to cry happy tears or sad tears, but it has to move you or it fails as a story. If it teaches you something? All the better. I mean a kid could learn from this movie that blindly trusting someone can be a bad thing and shows you why. And if the story didn't move you, the lesson might not stick and might have to be relearned the hard way.
When I was a young teen I had a beautiful half-rotty, half-shepherd puppy named Brolly (don't laugh if you know where my young self got that from). I can easily say I loved him more than anything, but he clearly loved me back like nothing else. When I was 15 I ran away to get away from abusive parents and couldn't bring him with me; it was devastating. Several years later my father beat him to death. I will never get over it until my own death.
Couldn’t imagine! I love my daisy. She’s a chorkie, so she small which means I take her everywhere, she’s sitting next to me know just dreaming away. She be 10 in December, I’m hoping she’s still on the uphill and I have more years with her, it’ll break my heart once her time comes.
@@yourlifeisagreatstory It will, and I'm sorry for that ☹️ I mostly think about it when I watch this movie, but even then it's not because of the movie content but because I'm bawling yet again over Judith Barsi 😭
I can't tell you many times this VHS was watched in my house...like 20 maybe, 25? Enough that I know every moment by heart and I love it death for no rational reason. See also Land Before Time and An American Tale, same deal.
For real.. those along with Top Gun, TMNT, Batteries Not Included, Stand By Me, and the original Star Wars trilogy were in constant rotation. There were a few other movies of the late 80’s early 90’s that would pop into rotation but the ones you and I listed were on multiple times in a week haha
Land Before Time. Never Ending Story. Both movies are the reason I grew up so quickly and stayed this age since. Big mentions, Secret of Nihm, and The Rescuers. Adult themes, for kids....
Kid/family movies just doesn't go this hard anymore. Kids need to be exposed to these truths in kid friendly ways. We shouldn't be hiding these things from kids. Look at all of our childhood favorites, there were some dark themes. We made it out the other end ok.
Don Bluth was on another level, the storytelling back then didn't sugarcoat it either - Watch Land before time next! And also the tragic story of Judith Barsi, who voiced Anne-Marie (this was her last film), may she find peace in heaven!
This movie traumatized me as a kid. I had nightmares about Charlie getting hit by the car. I woke up balling, the only time in my life that’s ever happened. It is one of 2 dreams I had as a kid that I remember vividly to this day.
I have seven dogs. Peanut (Yellow Labrador), Ticker (Blue Tick Hound), Rival, Missy, Jade (Red Tick Hound - Treeing Walker Mix), Cain (Cane Corso - Neapolitan Mastiff mix), and Tallon (we think he's a German shepherd - Belgian malinois) and one passed away not to long ago. Learic *Lyric* (blue nosed pit bull)
Ill try to make this short. There was a stray cat at my work, tabby with long matted hair. I loved on him and he was very sweet, but everyone else there refused to pet him cuz they thought he was disgusting. I almost took him home, but when i decided to, he disappeared. Another sick stray cat showed up, and i took her home, and she became a great, sweet pet who i loved. Then, months later, the original cat showed back up! My house was full now so i couldn't take him in, but i took him to the vet for a checkup and re-released him. We could never tell his gender because he was so fluffy, but the vet told me he was male, so i named him Manly Man. Tragically, i got a call from a coworker one day that the cat was very badly injured, which i wont do into detail about. They arranged for a rescue to pick him up. I raced over to see him, but the lady had just picked him up. I called her for an update and she said he died on the way to the vet. I still beat myself up 10 years later that i didnt just take him home. Every day on the day of his death, i look at pics of him and cry and tell him i love him. Nobody ever showed him love but me, so i always make sure to keep him in my thoughts. I hope you all give your pets a scratch in honor of my kitty Manly Man
Those and Bambi were an intro to death anxiety for me as a little kid haha. I remember discussing this movie years ago at a previous job. We had a girl working there who we will say was a “little slow”, nice, but slow. She flipped out when the office jerk said something about how animals don’t go to heaven then started talking about heaven and God not even existing. Personal beliefs aside it was wrong and he knew what he was doing. I’ve never seen someone so hysterical, we had to call her parents to come talk her down and almost called an ambulance because she was hyperventilating so bad… poor girl.
My pit bull Diamond would watch the television show The Flash. She would even get excited whenever I mentioned or asked her about some of the characters from the show.
This movie... and Don Bluth movies in general are a big part of why kids from the 80s and 90s are just... built different XD Seriously, kids movies of this era didn't hold back on the emotional damage, and we just kind of had to learn how to come out on the other side alright XD
i’ve been catching up on a lot of your movie reactions and you heavily remind me of this other reactor but she reacts to music or she does vocal analysis on songs she’s never heard before and you guys also look alike in some ways and it trips me out, her channel is “The Charismatic Voice”
This was one of my all time favourite movies growing up. It and The Great Mouse Detective. Both have very dark moments, so I wonder what that says about me as a child...
Carface's name could be a reference to Al Capone's nickname "Scarface," & and the skinnier smaller dog with the glasses and the collar could be Walter Payne that was an American accountant who worked as Al Capone's chief bookkeeper during Prohibition...I mean the film takes place in Louisiana 1939 after all.
All of Don Bluth's major animated movies are amazing (not counting all the sequels). A Troll in Central Park is one of his best ones that doesn't get mentioned enough among his other hits.
Fun story: when I was a child, I had a seizure and a fever. Went to the hospital, came back to lie on the couch for a few days. During that time I watched this movie. HUGE MISTAKE. I spent the rest of my recovery time thinking about how I might die. 😅
Charlie B. Barkin was my favorite cartoon name as a child. when i grewd up a bartender friend fell in love with a thing on the internet with alittle british girl telling her brother " aww that hurt Charlie" first time she showed it to me i laughed and said hi charlie ohhhh Charlie your a ghost! she didnt get it, but soon maybe you will
My dad used to walk our dog every single day right after work until she died, he never expressed anything until he saw this movie, he cried and said "I miss you, I'll see you again" 😢 2:55 something pretty 31:21 this was the last movie of Judy Barsi 😢, she died too soon
So I had an iguana named charmander. I got her from a place that had tons of them in a single cage. She was missing claws due to them being ripped out. So iguanas and reptiles in general are highly affected by stress. Iguanas turn black if they suffer from extreme anxiety. It kills them. She obviously has horrible anxiety and the only way to get her to feel better was to take her outside. I had a homemade cage I built for outside. I even had a harness and I’d take her to petsmart. She’s nest in my hair. People loved her. Eventually she died. She died very very young, but I did all I could for her :(
There's a lot of sad dog movies, I've seen most of them being a big animal lover. My dog when I was a child was named Cody too, he was a saint Bernard/collie mix, imagine a dog with a super skinny body to the point of seeing his ribcage (even though he's the laziest/chillest dog ever) with a big head
I love All Dogs Go To Heaven and All Dogs Go To Heaven 2 and then there's the All Dogs A Christmas Carol which is a movie based on A Christmas Carol but with the All Dogs cast. They're all really good animated classics. I used to watch them all the time as a kid. I was never allowed to have pets beyond fish and an aquatic frog.
Is there a modern day equivalent to Don Bluth? Land before time, American Tail, and the such were legendary in the history of American animation. Pixar can crank out some modern classics, but it takes an army now to make and don't seem to be a vision of one amazing human as much.
I grew up with this film, and it taught me the concept of death, and I couldn't bring myself to watch it. Now, knowing everything around it, I can't bring myself to watch it as an adult.
oh Cinderella, your like my movie Squirrel - " why did my dog love this movie? its terrible" 1,2,3, --- (ahhh sheep!!!!).--- no wonder my dog loved it this movies great!!
This comes close but it is the saddest dog movie ever. That title belongs to Hachi: A Dog’s Tale. I can never watch it without tearing up a storm and the. I’ll give my own dog a big hug and kiss just to let him know how much I love him!!!
I'd say Plague Dogs is easily the title holder for saddest dog movie ever, but I'd even feel bad recommending that. It's not even bittersweet it's just straight up bitter. It was based on a book written by an animal rights activist who wanted to piss off animal lovers enough to enact change. The book's editor made him soften the ending but to the author's delight the movie used the truly horrible original ending and the people who were fooled enough by the poster to watch it in theaters were so upset by it it actually did lead to some law changes in Britain pertaining to animal testing. It's one of the bleakest movies ever made
If you’re going to be watching more animated films like this I have two big recommendations. The Last Unicorn, from Rankin Bass, and almost anything from Studio Ghibli.
Burt Reynolds recorded his goodbye as Charlie after finding out Judith Barsi had been killed. He asked for a closed set, just him and the sound recorder, and it took him all day to record his lines. @@yourlifeisagreatstory It will, and I'm sorry for that ☹️ I mostly think about it when I watch this movie, but even then it's not because of the movie content but because I'm bawling yet again over Judith Barsi 😭
Oh boy… 1 snake, 2 dogs, 7 goats, and 25 cats. I could list names, but that would take awhile.
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. 😊
Don Bluth is responsible for a fair amount of my childhood trauma.
I basically told Don Bluth that when I met him in person. He had a little chuckle at my my comment.
Love you Jax, you and Lammy bring a smile to my day 😊
Thank you! I hope you have a magical rest of your week!! ❤️🐑
@@reactswithjax i will now 😁
I love this movie. P.S. "If there are no dogs in heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went." -Will Rogers
This was Don Bluth. Secret of Nihm is as well. Amazing but also violent
Don Bluth was on another level, the storytelling back then didn't sugarcoat it either - Watch Land before time next!
And also the tragic story of Judith Barsi, who voiced Anne-Marie (this was her last film), may she find peace in heaven!
She also did Ducky on Land Before Time
This movie traumatized me as a kid.
I hope you all give your pets a scratch in honor of my kitty Manly Man
This and The Land Before Time absolutely destroyed me as a kid 😂
Those and Bambi were an intro to death anxiety for me as a little kid haha.
I remember discussing this movie years ago at a previous job. We had a girl working there who we will say was a “little slow”, nice, but slow. She flipped out when the office jerk said something about how animals don’t go to heaven then started talking about heaven and God not even existing. Personal beliefs aside it was wrong and he knew what he was doing. I’ve never seen someone so hysterical, we had to call her parents to come talk her down and almost called an ambulance because she was hyperventilating so bad… poor girl.
@SliderFury1 I will add Secret of Nimh and Watership Down to that list! Jax should watch both of those.
Yeah, bith emotional movues, even without Anne-Marie and Ducy's IRL fate
My pit bull Diamond would watch the television show The Flash. She would even get excited whenever I mentioned or asked her about some of the characters from the show.
You should watch the second one!! It's so cool!! i love it a lot more than the first
This movie... and Don Bluth movies in general are a big part of why kids from the 80s and 90s are just... built different XD Seriously, kids movies of this era didn't hold back on the emotional damage, and we just kind of had to learn how to come out on the other side alright XD
When I had two German Shepherd’s I named them Charlie and Anne Marie because of this movie.
i’ve been catching up on a lot of your movie reactions and you heavily remind me of this other reactor but she reacts to music or she does vocal analysis on songs she’s never heard before and you guys also look alike in some ways and it trips me out, her channel is “The Charismatic Voice”
This was one of my all time favourite movies growing up. It and The Great Mouse Detective. Both have very dark moments, so I wonder what that says about me as a child...
wow childhood memories.. oliver & co just came out the year before and these 2 were my favourite movies at the time (age 8/9)
You're the only one who I've seen have the idea of Carface redeeming himself too. That's actually a brilliant take.
I love that all dogs get to have their own redemption arc!
Oh no! That's terrible...I feel bad for laughing!
Ya, this along with Bambi and Land Before Time were a kick start to death anxiety as a little kid haha.
WOW! Do you and me have opposing definitions of fun. congrats on the get well
R.I.P. James Earl Jones (1931-2024) · Mufasa & Darth Vader
Charlie B. Barkin was my favorite cartoon name as a child. when i grewd up a bartender friend fell in love with a thing on the internet with alittle british girl telling her brother " aww that hurt Charlie" first time she showed it to me i laughed and said hi charlie ohhhh Charlie your a ghost! she didnt get it, but soon maybe you will
oh no. you left on the cutting room floor
My dad used to walk our dog every single day right after work until she died, he never expressed anything until he saw this movie, he cried and said "I miss you, I'll see you again" 😢
2:55 something pretty
31:21 this was the last movie of Judy Barsi 😢, she died too soon
So I had an iguana named charmander. I got her from a place that had tons of them in a single cage. She was missing claws due to them being ripped out.
So iguanas and reptiles in general are highly affected by stress. Iguanas turn black if they suffer from extreme anxiety. It kills them.
She obviously has horrible anxiety and the only way to get her to feel better was to take her outside. I had a homemade cage I built for outside.
I even had a harness and I’d take her to petsmart. She’s nest in my hair. People loved her. Eventually she died. She died very very young, but I did all I could for her :(
After knowing the dark truth this movie hits harder. I haven’t seen this movie since I was a little boy
Now we need a list of dog movies for her to watch like hachi, a dogs life 1 and 2, a dogs journey, a dogs way home, and im sure their are more as well
Marley and Me, Old Yeller, Where the Red Fern Grows.
Milo and Otis!!!
How many Benji movies are there?
I LOVE your Reaction!!!!!😍
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
I love this movie so much! The ending kills me Everytime, moreso now since I lost my doggie Blondie 2 months ago, I miss her so much 😭
I'm so sorry you lost your beautiful Blondie. ❤️
@@reactswithjax thank you ❤️
There's a lot of sad dog movies, I've seen most of them being a big animal lover.
Pixar can crank out some modern classics, but it takes an army now to make and don't seem to be a vision of one amazing human as much.
omg nostalgia at its peak ahaha
I've got a Bernedoodle named Velvet. I couldn't imagine not having a dog.
I would guess he liked to listen to the dog sounds of the movie.
Everything that Don Bluth made is worth watching.
I grew up with this film, and it taught me the concept of death, and I couldn't bring myself to watch it. Now, knowing everything around it, I can't bring myself to watch it as an adult.
Isle of Dogs with Edward Norton was surprisingly fun
More Pitch Meeting Reviews, please. He's been very open about having "guest appearances" if one wants to arrange "guest appearances".
Another movie directed by the same director is called An American Tail about an immigrant mouse family coming to America.
I would say it's been a good 30 years since I saw this movie. I won't be surprised if I barely remember any real details as your reaction plays out.
Masterpiece ever. Great ❤❤❤❤
My Dog was my best friend a beautiful German Shepherd named Zephyr who was named after the Ford Zephyr Car she was born in ❤
What makes it even worse is when you know the actor Judith Barsi was actually murdered by her father.
oh Cinderella, your like my movie Squirrel - " why did my dog love this movie? its terrible" 1,2,3, --- (ahhh sheep!!!!).--- no wonder my dog loved it this movies great!!
It's one of the bleakest movies ever made
You should really react to HOMEWARD BOUND, since it's a dog and cat movie I'm sure you'll enjoy
If you’re going to be watching more animated films like this I have two big recommendations. The Last Unicorn, from Rankin Bass, and almost anything from Studio Ghibli.
“You know. Not all dogs go to heaven.”
- Angelica Pickles
RIP moseph the blue fish
Keep watching the rest of them
To stay in this Era, and dog theme, I'd suggest "Oliver and Company"
RIP to all 3 main voice actors
Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2009) MUST watch
Staying with Don Bluth films, The Secret of NIMH is a must watch.
That movie might freak her out lol
@@nsasupporter7557 Nah, I think she made of tougher stuff than that, I bet by the end she'd be moved to tears.
