This game is nothing like Terraforming Mars. Only comparison you could make is that it's a card based board game, cards have tags, and the income is similar to your terraforming rating. That's basically where the comparisons end. I suppose if i stretch it your board is like the map where if you cover something you immediately get it and the end game goals are like the awards/milestones you can fund.
Just watched 45 Minutes and the explanation is pretty good. Played that game 7 or 8 times now (4 times solo, which is much faster to play) and I would recommend your explanation for everyone who wants to learn Ark Nova. Great job! By the way, I will teach this game next Friday to a new group and try to keep the explanation at 20 minutes 😜
Glad to watch this before playing at Gridcon - this game already seems like it handles its theme way better than TfM did! Not to mention Zoos > Mars Colonisation :P
My comparisons after playing it once: - Terraforming Mar - every card is unique and used for engine building. - Civilization A new dawn - the 5 primary action cards which are upgradeable. - Wingspan - where the theming is on point and relaxing (also unique cards and an engine builder) - Race for the Galaxy - SYMBOLS!!! I got two Venom based animals for my zoo and the rules for them and other attack based effects cover so much of the symbols guide sheet.
This game looks excellent, and this video is great. However, this game isn't ending untill the players make it end is troublesome. I love Rajas tho, and the crossing 2 paths is always fun but in that game you have no reason not to push forward and end the game I hope this is the same and not like TFM where you might have other point scoring engines going that make you want to postpone the end. Guess I'll wait and see. EDIT: Having played this solo and watching a few more video's has me confinced there are no issues with game end. There are no reasons to postpone gaining appeal of conservation points. Awesome game.
Almost halfway through this video and love the look and feel of this game the more I see it. I would certainly draft cards for the opening hands much the way Becky and I do for any game that opening hands can really impact the whole of the game (with some exceptions).
@@Ember-k7w Deal the appropriate number of cards to each player. Then, simultaneously, players select a card to keep in their hands and pass the remaining cards to the player on their left. Repeat the process until players have a full hand of drafted cards.
@@Ember-k7w I haven't played Ark Nova yet, so it's possible a variant draft could work better. For the variant...one the first round of the draft players select one card and pass the remaining four. Round two, they select two cards (any two, they can choose to pass the first card they drafted in this variant). Round three they draft three...and so on. This variant allows for a bit of adjustment in strategy over the course of the draft.
i really enjoyed watching you all play! I didn't expect yellow player to win without all 4 sponser upgrades, but now i may consider getting that extra worker instead
Thanks for the playthrough. Looks suitably different from TFMars so am keen to give it a go! Just need to wait until it is available. Maybe needs a draft at game start, or just accept that none of your starting cards may actually hit the table and play accordingly.
I remember the first time we played Rajas it took very long (every game takes quite a bit longer when learning it), and the last time we played my brother felt it was too fast because I triggered the en of the game pretty quick ( I have more experience than him with the game). This end game trigger lends it self to the more efficient you get the faster the game it's going to go. I read that experience players will normally only have six breaks in a game.
I'm 52 mins in and noticed you built a 5 Hex enclosure which gave you 5 back but you didn't pay the 2 per hex (10 Total) to place it, or am I missing something?
Very interesting game and I am looking forward to it. I can see the comparison to TFM but only with that one mechanic really and I think people who have played well have an easier time learning this one.
@@GamingRulesVideos Oh, I would also love to watch a solo playthrough! Sadly, I'm not a supporter via patreon yet, but will be when it's within my budget because I love your channel. :)
Question of I may: What kind of sleeves did you use? My game arrived today and I would like to buy some ☺️ Thx for the playthrough. It was very helpful!
Thank you so much for this! Clear and to the point, really helped me get pretty much all the rules down on my first game :) I’m just a little confused on end game scoring, the player who got 2 points I understand because you went off the lowest appeal value in that section but the second player scores 5 points but you didn’t count from the lowest appeal, or am I getting that wrong 🤔
I just watched it back. I think we did it correct. Both blue and red scored 4 points in the game. Yellow scored 22. You move your conservation marker to the lowest appeal space in its section and then count from there.
looks nice, but i am afraid its too much multiplayer solitaire.. for someone who doesnt like Paladins of the West kingdom at all, does it feel similar to that?
I love the mechanics but the scoring completely turns me off to this game. Having your score be what you score on your final turn seems incredibly stupid to me. Also, I won’t have anything to work toward in future games in the solo game if scoring zero is how to win.
I think it's fair to say that you're score is going to be the score on your final turn, but in a competitive game the only way to think of your points is comparative to the other players. Timing wise it might be more advantageous to end one turn or another, but delaying the end is only giving more turns to other players. Ending in a big push might give you more "positive" points, but if you end it early and everyone else is still in the negative zone you're still gonna win.
Thanks for the video! Just a minor critique, your friends constantly saying "right", "yeah", etc during the rules teach is quite distracting. I know you're engaging with them since you're teaching in person, and like most gamers, they want to let the person teaching the game know they are following and paying attention. (I hate when people check their phone or are otherwise distracted during rules explanations). But in the future, perhaps they can try to just nod or provide other non-verbal indications that they are following. I don't mind when they interject questions, as those were usually helpful.
superbly done Paul! Great teach and a fabulous host to the fellow gamers at the table. No better way to learn about the game!

Such a great tutorial. Thank you. Without doubt the most helpful, clear and concise tutorial i have seen for this game 👍

Ready to play my Xmas gift! Great timing.
The free monkey in the beginning was a huge boost for the winner. Great gameplay. Thanks!
Dan is so great playing this.
He is coming over again this Friday
I need a guided playthrough of this game 😂 we have been trying to figure it out and it’s overwhelming.
Hopefully this helped :)

Thank you for the tutorial and playthrough. :) I have it on pre-order, and I'm really excited to play it!
Great play through, really showcased what the game has to offer and convinced me to place a UK per order. Hoping to receive it in early Jan.
Amazing playthrough! Thank you! How did you feel about sleeving the cards? Did it make it easier to shuffle? Was it necessary?
I find shuffling cards with good quality sleeves a lot easier to do.
Thanks Paul. Keep up the great work. 👍
Love it , no social justice banners stuck on the presentation like before. Nice to be back watching these well made videos.
Thanks for watching, but not sure what you mean about social justice banners. Don't think I've ever put those on.

Really enjoyable game, sure the game might be long but why focus on the time when you are having such a good time!

Very good tutorial again! Congrats! But the “all the time acknowledging rules dude” is a bit annoying sometimes.
What a game.
I am not watching this live so I guess I am leaving a comment. ;)
Great video as always. This game really flew under my radar until this video... and now I must have it! I thank you, my wallet does not! ;)
Is solo beat-your-own-score, achieve-a-goal or beat-the-AI ?
solo playthrough coming soon!
Can you have more than 1 reptile enclosure in your zoo?
Nope. Only 1 each of the special enclosures.
Pausing at 10 mins in... hope this gets less complicated lol jeezes
