- Just as Past Masters did for the Beatles, this collects all the non-album singles by The Pretty Things from 1964 to 1978: some of the best R&B, garage rock (23:45), psychedelia (41:34), hard rock (1:05:03) and slow burners (1:16:14). Along the way are many factoids about their career and connection to David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Keith Moon, Pete Townshend, The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, The Clash and others.
So basically, if one listened to each of the main albums and this video you would hear all the studio material released in the first era under the name The Pretty Things. For most bands that would be nearly everything, but for this band that leaves a wealth of great songs Check out our videos Electric Banana 1967-1978, Turn My Head (songs only done live), Sunshine (1972), Phil May & the Fallen Angels (1978), Wally Waller's Do It/I Don't Feel Well (1978/1981) and Lost Late Leftovers. Consider this the tip of a glorious iceberg.

I think that their Achilles heel was that they were never on Ready Steady Go or Top of the Pops, had they been it would have been a different story.
I love them, but I think they may have been a little too raw and wild for big mainstream success. Maybe.
Just like in Germany. We had to hitchhike to NL to listen to good music. The Pretty Things were in every jukebox.
@@bobgreen623interesting. And maybe there was slot, commercially speaking, for raw bands and the Stones filled it.
Or the Pretty Things were even a bit more raw than Mick and co.?
But what a great thing that they persisted, found enough of an audience to play and record for so many years decades.
@written12 from some of the live footage I've seen from about 65/66 they were a lot more wild on stage than the Stones.
"Growl-2":
JEALOUS & a bit "Threatened" Jagger PERSONALLY Demanded Those Shows BAN' "The Competition" (ie: Girls Dug Phil May & His Hair a bit MUCH' etc) Or The Stones would not appear going forward etc.....
Phil Regaled ME That (& Some "Other" VERY KOOL Gems etc) When I Had OPPORTUNITY to Speak w/Him in Length (I Think He might've Suspected I Was an L.A. Based Jounalist of sorts "Sportin' My "420 HWY' Hemp Ball-Cap & THOROUGH KNOW Regarding The Band's History etc) After Their (1999) Appearance At The "WORLD FAMOUS WHISKEY a' GO GO" Show out Here on The Coast Amigo'!! 🍻🕶
They really stirred the soul of a young puber
My elder brother was Kinks me 14 years old, the Pretty Things was the first album I wanna have
Our parents hated them, or felt threatened or disgusted by them, so they must have been doing something right.
great garagy vibe , all around !!!
Phil Mays’ music weather with Pretty Things or later, solo albums, they were always quality and evolved into a tightly connected recognized sound, at least by me…I don’t lie, I eat most of my vegetables, and I take music seriously, I took a course in Community College in music appreciation. I’m giving it away for free. Tom
I also sell land, cheap, with a view of the bridge
If I can buy the bridge and not simply see it, I’d take up your offer.
Are you stateside or in the U.K. ?
Excellent collection TNX
WOW! Thank you!
THANKS FOR THIS

This brought back great memories of club sessions from the most underrated English Rock band ever. The text overlays has some gems of information, unfortunately the yellow fade in and out left little time to read everything without pausing the video especially the longer pieces, otherwise a great posting about a truly creative band.
A great manager would have made a huge difference....
Ahhhhhh,so PRETTY these THINGS you put out Garrett.Greatly appriciated!
I figured this would be a good "initiation" compilation for a newbee. Not necessarily all their best, but a good objective overview without being redundant to the albums, and with more factoids than usual.
The early pretty things were like The kinks but with two Dave Davies and no Ray Davies.
I can see that, but once Wally showed up I'd say they went Ray (or Lou Reed) with Emotions, SF Sorrow and Parachute.
Very good comparison. Of course there's Ray's lyrics
S.F is a underrated masterpiece.
Dick Taylor guitar style is matching phil voice
@@danielmoore7332 it's like I saw a band from la a few years ago called The Long ryders and I told the guy who sponsored the show they were like REM but with no Michael Stipe and 2 Peter Bucks.

You need to enjoy the music - kinda see the ‘forest through the trees,’ You sounded analytical when music is both feeling and grinding dissonance of one of my favorite groups - the great Krautrockers of the age, but not, actually , The question is what is Faust?
Ian,
Your analytical mind would have great fun with Faust - you’ve been served
Your comment, by the bye was quite enjoyable, thank you
I’ve been joking with ya, but am and have been seriously into Pretty Things a long time. They were old school and their being discovered and exploited was inevitable (for love of money…? HELL YEA! Seriously though, my friend LLOYD FONOROFF would stop by my apartment after a 2 1\2 train ride with a new album from Greenwich Village in Ukraine stop at my basement and we’d listen on a crappie stereo, but there were so many bands, all outdoing each other, It still (the music) hasn’t been a bad way to go, no regrets, I guess I had a few, too few to mention -Paraphrasing lyrics by Frank Sinatra

The early pretty things are like The kinks but with no Ray Davies and two Dave Davies.
And the Stones without Sir Mick.
I read that Viv auditioned for the Kinks drums before Mick…imagine that combination with Dave.
@@TGTG-vp9wg I think they would have been complete unknowns and dispersed to other bands because Ray would have stomped out never to return early in the game.
@@TGTG-vp9wg Actually Viv' & Dave were LEGENDARY/Crazy Antic/
Bar Hound/Drinking Bud's Together In 65-66 London!!🔥
I se what you except when it came to the more raw, rhythm n blues style, they beat the pants off the Kinks.
Also, the band became great songwriters, a bit later on, in both a psychedelic and wistful, melodic style.
One GREAT track missing........... HONEY I NEED ! Shame. Seem's there's a LOT of compliation's of the Pretties. I have a couple so have to have a look at what to get..... I've alway's felt the Prettie's were much better than the stone's, during this period. The Stone's then started writing their own material and took the lead ............ Just a 75 year old's opinion.....
Except Honey I Need was on their debut album so not in the running here.
Interesting comments on why they never were bigger than they were. Get The Picture is pretty perfect. Along with the Yardbirds, Kinks and Them, they had the biggest influence on a multitude of U.S. garage bands.
No Roadrunner / Big City single in 1965 ???
Great single and my favorite version of Road Runner, but it had a home on their self titled debut album. This collection is for non-LP singles.
sometime they'll give a war and nobody will come, because everyone likes to listen to music and love peace and animals

Phil May "hated' Tonight? Huh. "Tonight" would've fit on Cross Talk very well.
Phil May: "it's just a total piece of s#!t and it has nothing to do with The Pretty Things." Personally I like it, although certainly not Gordon's best song for the band. Phil hated the pop/disco direction, but then again he jumped into that fully with Girl Like You/Shine on Baby in 1978.
I've ALWAYS Appreciated The Track:
Features a Great Vocal From Phil & it's Catchy/Melodic.....It Could've/Should've become an F.M. Pop/Rock Radio "Staple' Here In The States in that Mid-70 Period where The Genre' Played "Popular" on those formats next to The Hard Rock/Prog Stuff Then....
Sperbbuennnos, ohhhu.... glno Zabbboyniy Stoner Saikidell (and not only) RRockkkk,!!!! Yardbirds, favour, few below!!! TNKxxxxx!!!!
