      So we need to set examples but did Danny just say fatphobia is acceptable because fat people can eat less to avoid hate? I think these tragic events just point to the void that is obviously mental health in your country. It’s bad everywhere, but nobody, and especially nobody’s uninvolved relative, should become deceased as a result of verbal comments. I am no stranger to abuse, harassment, stalking etc. and am aware that it breaks down a person. But it the culture of public shaming, and lack of dialogue and support, not the netizens, that should be the focus of any attempts at reparations. A person who is supported properly, who is an adult public figure, should be able to manage these feelings. You will never eliminate public opinion as a public figure.

    Edit: it´s the comeback date and I just came back to say that they are doing just fine in the charts (#1 in Melon and #1 in Flo - they did it without breaking a sweat)
    Edit 2: they are demolishing charts with roof hit after roof hit and they did with just some promo poloroids and flowers. Kings Indeed.

      Freedom of speech means people can say things YOU disagree with, without jailing people just because they offended your delicate sensibilities. It's tragic that these two athletes were supposedly so damaged by toxic comments, but you have absolutely no clue as to their own mental health and whether they may have done this with or without such comments. When social media is hurting you that badly, don't read it...or change accounts. But you can't fill prisons with innocent people simply because you're a snowflake.

  • @sunb5738
    @sunb5738 2 года назад +421

    Those bullying issues are really scary and sad... I agree that it should be legally repressed way more to set an example.
    I don't know how it works in Korea but here in France we had a famous case of a (now) public figure whose bullies were sentenced. I reckon the punishments were not *that* high but it at least showed that you're not untouchable on the Internet, and even hidden behind a pseudonym your identity can be found.

    • @thelowkeygeek
      @thelowkeygeek 2 года назад +9

      The problem with legality is that most laws lag behind the internet and its ability to virally increase harassment online exponentially. That plus the relative ease with which you can hide your identity makes things difficult. While laws and legal efforts catch up to dealing with this kind of abuse, the better way to go about it is that the social media and community places that house these comments need to take ownership and de-platform or ban anyone engaging in targeted harassment of this nature, and keep doing it until people get the message. Higher standards and terms of service for using these online platforms will go a ways towards minimizing the access these commenters have to the celebrities in question - even if it turns out to be a consistent battle to do so. Additionally, representing companies and sponsors need to support targeted celebrities in forcefully condemning such comments in the first place, while at the same time providing the support needed to cope with them. It seems uncommon that people will actually come out and say these behaviors are wrong or that companies will seek action against those that target them consistently.
      There will always be hate commenters and harassers but the reason we have this problem is that people go "it's the internet" or go "it won't remove them completely", so the standards have been lowered. A line needs to be drawn in the sand.

    The school my niece and nephews went to has come up with a very effective way to counter bullying. It's called the big brother/big sister program. The school is grade one through eight. Every grade five student is assigned a grade one student, and they become the big brother/big sister. They help that child learn their way around school, check on them at lunch, help them with homework, and spend time together at recess. They stay "buddies" until the younger is at grade five, when they become a buddy to a new grade one student. This program encourages empathy and caring for others and reduces the power of cliques (kids don't have as much free time to spend in cliques because they have to help their little brother/sister. My oldest nephew is getting married this summer, and his 'little brother' from grade school is in his wedding party. They have stayed close all these years even though they attended different high schools. If all schools did something like this - make helping others a part of the curriculum - society might produce fewer bullies.

Also other kpop stans can't just bash or talk bad on BTS and expect Armys not to retaliate, when they will do the same for their own idols. And the way each Armys clapback will be different. There will surely be ones that is toxic.
      I think, all kpop stans just need to stop the blaming game, focus on their faves and respect other artists even if they don't stan them.

    hate comments are the real disaster in Korea, this news are just hideous
    some hate comments and fandom wars made me turned off and i didn't want to follow music of some bands, i hope i can concentrate on the appreciation of the art and not being crazy fan for whoever.... and that in the future the internet community will become more strict towards especially crazy fans and malicious comments(though i'm not seeing it's happening because of how much hype and money other parties are getting from it)
    and i just hate stupid comments about appearance. like....really ... you determinate your successes by your looks?! BTS once were called ugly, bigbang are not the korean standard beauties and GD still was the muse for karl lagerfeld's chanel.

    speaking from a lawyer's perspective, studies have shown that setting strict sentencing guidelines with harsh punishments are little to almost entirely ineffective when it comes to preventing crime. Instead, the same studies suggest that people tend to be more careful - i.e not recklessly write malicious comments on the internet - the higher the chance is of them actually getting caught. I don't know how the Korean law in particular deals with hate speech and malicious comments on the internet but many jurisdictions around the world still lack in that area, leading people to treat the web like a lawless and punishment-free zone. Therefore, a first step, in my opinion, would be to enact set of rules that clearly focus on that exact problem and give the government an opportunity to actually deal with such matters accordingly. A harsher punishment does no good at all when no one is going to be held accountable anyway.
    All in all it's a difficult matter and you'd probably have opposition arguing about loss of freedom of speech but it's definitely lawful to limit freedom of speech for the sake of 'greater' human rights, such as the right to dignity which is what this comes down to. Germany - also a jurisdiction with similar rulings to what Danny said in terms of defamation etc. - has quite recently enacted such a law and it has already had some positive effect

    In the US at least hate is so common that I feel like we are desensitized to hate especially from social media. Whether it’s racist, sexist, colorist, homophobic, body shaming etc. I feel like most people have become very desensitized but it still negatively impacts people a lot. In the US we’ve seen higher rates of suicide among children even elementary school kids which is so crazy. But our country is set up in a way where currently hateful people can even hold our highest office so it just sucks all around honestly.

      I don't know the laws in Korea. In (Western) Europe such bullies can be held accountable and it happens more and more frequently where I live. But a victim has to file a claim, or a family member respectively, in the case of a suicide, which doesn't always happen because the person in question is too intimidated, or embarrassed, or something else, like a lack of support in their environment. :( Also, if there is a suicide, it has to be proven that it's a result of the bullying, which may seem easy and evident at first, but legally, that can become quite tricky.

    I agree with David - people should be held accountable for what they say virtually. While there are defamation laws but note that a lot of these cyber bullies are keyboard warriors hiding behind pseudonyms.
    It is extremely difficult to change the mentality of an individual unless they have the desire to change or are aware of their actions - clearly these people don't. So if these bullies can't be civil then why should they be treated civilly? I know that is a slippery slope of a comment but essentially, like David said, there just need to some for of affirmative action and sadly, people do react to fear thus punishment is needed.
    These cyber bullies are murdered and I bet some of them don't even lose sleep over the impact of their words -- because there are no consequences when you're anonymous.

    I think it’ll be a Bang Bang Bang type of release, personally. I don’t think that level of anticipation will allow them to release something low key, it would be a let down.

      Yeah agreed. And considering they were supposed to make their comeback in Coachella 2020? (right?) would expect something veryy upbeat

      They were the pioneers of releasing double MVs/multiple MVs per comeback. I bet they're gonna release one upbeat and one mellow song.

    Thank goodness a Blue House petition has been started to look into hate comments problem. Theres gotta be a way to have free speech and also not cross the line to where your words could harm someone. At the same time, I hope people will take care of their mental health and be more open to therapy

    It has do with how society has developed due to the easy of access to the internet and social media. There is no human interaction. This is how the younger generations learns unlike the older generations. There is a disconnect. Plus having the anonymity on these social platforms emboldened them to do things that they would not do in public. If everyone is held accountable for everything they say or do on social media these people would stop. Not just being sued but also jail time and not insignificant amount of jail time. Especially if a death results from the bullying. Everyone should be held accountable for their actions, no matter who they are. Parents have really dropped the ball on teaching their kids about acceptable behavior in this day in age.

    I think it should be a mix of both solutions. Harsher punishment to ensure people would less likely do it, and also having identification to identify the people. They might not be public but the main company should still keep the details. So if hate comments are posted, they can be identified and punish with the more severe punishment. maybe have some filtering system as well on websites

    I don't know if i am right or not, but if this wasn't the social media era these haters would have evolved into psychokillers for sure, think about it lurking on someone's profile just to comment hate , it's not just someone messing around, it's literally like being a creep.

      Do they comment on their profiles?? They always just say that there are comments on "online communities"
