The Now: Nathan Strom

  • Most 16-year-old surfers aren’t capable of threading heavy tubes on a 5'2" one day, then riding the nose on a 9'6" log the next, but Nathan Strom is a little ahead of the curve. That’s because Strom has spent the past few years getting the CliffsNotes from longboard icon and fellow San Diegan Joel Tudor. Under the tutelage of Tudor, Strom has dedicated himself to mastering a wide variety of craft, from single-fin longboards to twin-keel fish to high-performance thrusters. With a knack for adapting to various boards and conditions, Strom is quickly becoming one of California’s most versatile surfers.

Thank You Joel Tudor from Bobby Droback for taking the time to teach. This kid has good style and seems like a good head on his shoulders. I wish nothing but the best for him whether he decides to become professional or just a free surfer.

Can't tell you how many times I've had someone claim the right to a wave after catching the white water well after I am already up. Look at 2:35 Dude is clearly trying to get out of the white and he then dives for him as if he even had a chance at the section. when the situation is reversed he doesn't react negatively. Look at 4:36 he could have kicked his board at him but he didn't.

I dont blame the guy for throwing this board at him. 2:16 he's dropping in on older blue board guy (blue board is also dropped in on crouching guy)
2:18 he's noseriding the shoulder and blue board guy is in the pocket.
It'd be interesting to see the unedited clips to see who is paddling where.
Major party wave action, you're a shithead if you think you can toss guys off 'your wave' (2:10) and then drop in on other logs and not face consequences (2:16)
Not surprised tudor is his mentor.

Just started surfing more specifically long board surfing a couple years ago and I never knew how big of assholes surfers were and are until I was out there in the "lineup" at my local spot, I typed "lineup" because there is no lineup at my spot it's basically just whoever can paddle the fastest and snake everyone to the best spot gets all the waves. I grew up thinking surfing was about "the ride" and having fun, but it's so competitive and elitist sometimes it's hard to have fun. I still love it and will continue to surf because there is nothing like the feeling of riding a wave, it's very addicting. I just wish people would relax and take it easy. Maybe it's just the spot I go too haha
Also want to add that i dream of being able to surf like this kid :)

STOP DROPPING IN. You're a better surfer, great, doesn't give you the right to ANYTHING. I'm smarter than you, doesn't mean I can cut you off every time you try to speak. LAME.

If these guys ever visited an inner city housing project, their delusions would be instantly cured. They can shred longboards though, I'll give them that. Fighting hahahahhaha.....
