    Hey, Dean! Bought a Quantum Smoke S3 7:3:1. KVD model. What Modern Medium Heavy Baitcaster rod. Would be the best match up for this reel?Also what length for a Pond. I have been fishing more open ponds. Been fishing 6'6. Because of trees and brush. Just want to reach out further. The Smoke casts a long distance. It doesn't have to be a Quantum. Just your opinion on the best rod for the Smoke. Thanks, Your American Mate. Love the hats you sent. Shawn.

      hey boss, what lures are you planning on throwing on it? If its cranks, square bills or chatterbaits i would get the KVD crank rod mate, so good. I think i was running the 711 model in the US

      @@DeanSilvester Thanks, Dean! Always a great answer and opinions. Wishing nothing but the best. It was in the low 40's this morning. Caught 12 Largies. On the ACCURIST PT S3 bait caster and a MH Cherrywood HD 6'6 and Suffix 832 green moss 30 pound braid. Z-Man Chatterbait CHARTREUSE and White with Pearl White Zoom fluke as a trailer. The bass were just pounding that Chatterbait. Good luck Mate! Shawn.

    I swear KVD knows what he is talking about.
    It took me some years and alot of time out fishing to see how much better the KVD’s perform compared to my Rapala BX Big Brats, and my Berkley Squarebull 7.5’s. The Rapala BX Big Brats have a good strong durable plastic polymer finish, very durable, good size hooks (not as big as the KVD’s though) but the front hook tangles over the bill about 4-6 times out of 10 and it sucks when you waste casts. The KVD’s do not have that issue as much. I might waste a cast 1-2 times out of 10 casts but rarely.
    The Berkley Squarebulls 7.5 size have GREAT DURABLE finishes just like the Rapala, but I think the Rapala BX Big Brats are tougher and more durable than the Berkley Squarebull crankbaits. The Berkley Squarebull crankbaits RARELY almost NEVER have the front hook ever cross onto the square bill and waste a cast, the Berkley Fusion 19 hooks come STANDARD,Y RAZOR SHARP! MY ON,Y PROBLEM IS THE HOOKS ARE WAY TOO SMALL FOR A LURE THAT SIZE (7.5 Berkley Squarebull)! THE KVD 1.5 HOOKS ARE BIGGER THAN THE BERKLEY SQUAREBULL 7.5’s! What does that tell you? And I have hooked some fish on the Berkley Squarebull and I have lost some fish as well, and I think it is because of those small hooks.
    -BUT… I have ALWAYS landed ALL of my fish I have EVER caught on my KVD’s! The squarebills 2.5’s, 8.0 Magnums, the 10XD’s and others. I HAVE NEVER LOST A FISH ON A KVD; I HAVE LANDED ALL OF MY FISH I HAVE EVER CAUGHT ON MY KVD’s and it is because of those bigger wider open size hooks they put on them. MY ONLY PROBLEM WITH THE KVD Squarebills is THE PAINT SUCKS! The paint chips quickly after a few weeks!
    If Strike King KVD’s made their squarebills paint jobs better like on the 10XD’s that would help improve the durability of the lures alot.

      Very in depth feedback mate, thanks! I didn't have the issue of tangling much when i ran it on the KVD cranking rod and straight through fluro

    Dean I'm trying to under stand all these different crank baits and how to use them. Are these mostly used from boats? Most of the lakes I fish get fairly deep but I need to shore fish. Are they effective running up the ledge or is it a waste of money and time for now? Thanks.

    • @DeanSilvester
      @DeanSilvester  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Mate,
      They can be effectively fished from the shore line however you may want to fish more parallel and use shallower running crank baits so you are only ploughing the bottom on the last few yards of your retreive.
      you can also allow the lure to float back to the surface when you get closer to the bank so that you are not constantly getting snags.
      hope this helps a little.

  • @The_Great_White
    @The_Great_White 5 лет назад +2

    So what type and lb line is good for deep cranking? I’m guessing about 14 fluorocarbon? Or mono bc it stretches? But it does float more than fluoro right?

    • @DeanSilvester
      @DeanSilvester  5 лет назад +1

      fluoro is the best mate as it sinks and helps get you better depth and sensitivity, 12-14lb is the most common but again depends on depth of water and crank bait you are using. the heavier the line the shallower the lure will run.

    If you have a soft bottom (not rip rap or stone) does it affect whether you fish it at that depth or slightly above?

    • @DeanSilvester
      @DeanSilvester  7 лет назад

      they don't always fish rip rap however the aim is always to deflect off the bottom

    • @Grey0056
      @Grey0056 7 лет назад +1

      Understood; but can you fish the crank & deflect it off a soft bottom effectively?

    • @DeanSilvester
      @DeanSilvester  7 лет назад +1

      it won't deflect as erratically as rip-rap but it will throw dust and debris as it skips through the softer bottom. the key will be to ensure your crankbait is only just making it to the bottom say 1-2 feet depper running then the water you are fishing rather than have it trying to dive 5-6 feet deeper.
      for example, in 14 feet of water run a lure that dives to 15 ft rather than 20 feet.
      hope this helps out

    • @Grey0056
      @Grey0056 7 лет назад +1

      Right; and that has been the rub - trying to get the right sink depth as it moves along the slopes. Have bought new fluorcarbon line - and have been trying to use the right reel/rod/bait to achieve consistent depth.

      Try 10 pd XT. That's what we use trolling lake Erie to get are plugs to the max depth. Landed many Walleyes over 9 pds. It will get your plugs to the depth your looking for. It's holds up great on abrasions.

      Check out a Shimano or Diawa, I use shimanos for 5, 6, 8, and 10 XDs and they throw and retrieve great. If your looking to save a couple of bucks, check out the Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier, it throws like a $300 reel for $99, pretty hard to beat.
