@@thomcarr7021 Single parent households were incentivized. In fact a household could get more if no husband/father was present. Before the War on Poverty the out of wedlock percentage for African American births was around 22%. Now it is almost 80%. A complete reversal. In many cases women's independence from men resulted in government dependence.

      Not just Blacks...
Another knock-on effect is probably the current status of things between men and women...
Paying women to have kids, etc., increases that sense of independence... which correspondingly reduces their appreciation and respect for men... teamwork... and reduces men's value to society as both husbands and fathers, further wrecking the family structure.
Even more, the family structure is every baby's/child's first introduction to society.
Wreck the family, and you can't help but cause great damage to the greater society as well.

Having "someone" (the scientist in the experiment, Uncle Sam in real life) provide the necessities made the male mice redundant... useless.

How he stole people’s land, ranches, attempted to grab entire oilfields. LBJ knew there is oil under Southern Viet Nam (more than there is under Saudi Arabia) and that’s the reason we were in Viet Nam. Civil Rights was the sop, the placating prize. Personally I believe that LBJ was behind the assassination of JFK. I read somewhere that JFK was planning to sign an Executive Order in to Law when he got back from Dallas, an order that would have disbanded and defunded the Federal Reserve Board. When the government grants welfare to the poor, they will only give them enough money for them to remain poor. It doesn't fight poverty, at all. It entrenches poverty as a lifestyle. They don't have to work and they get just enough for a roof over their heads, some second hand clothes and enough (barely) to eat. It's not easy but neither is menial labour. Then, if you reward them for having children, it will guarantee that they will never rise to any economic prosperity.

Being from near to Johnson City, most everyone around here knew all this about Lyndon Johnson. However, we were almost never effected by any of his social policies, the way folks in a city might have been. We lived in rural ranches with a couple thousand people per county. Before WW2, as a House member, he was able to get the approval for funds to build a dam on the river, and got electricity for the ranchers. However, he went along with Roosevelt, in slaughtering thousands of cattle during the depression and leaving them to rot in the pasture, while people were starving. They claimed they did this to keep beef prices high - which didn’t work. He then arranged for low interest loans for farmers & ranchers to try to appease rural voters who has become suspicious, but most distanced themselves from him. He later arranged to be elected as the Senator from Texas, and Vice President at the same time - which had been illegal, until he had a law changed. Yet, he was loved by the liberals in Austin, while instituting horrible social programs for blacks. Old news around here. Too bad so many others didn’t (still don’t) realize it.

But later in his presidency he began to realize his mistake. There was no way to stop the Communist aggression from Ho Chi Mn who, according to history, was an ally to America against the Japanese in WW11. (After my USAF tour in Phan Rang, Vietnam 1967-68 I found out that Phan Rang Air Base was mostly constructed and occupied by the Japanese during WW11)
Kennedy wanted to pull back on things in Vietnam! LBJ became a millionaire many times over due to his back door dealings with war manufactured related products like Bell helicopters and General Dynamics as he escalated the war with the help of Westmoreland and McNamara. Their foolish belief of winning the war in Vietnam parallels Bidens billions of dollar donation ignorance to Zelenski's Ukraine, a war they cannot win against Russia...LBJ was a scum bag much like our current president Joe Biden...

I believe in Thomas Sowell, My mom was first of her family born here of Russian & English parents (from their own countries)in 1913. Her life improved because of hers and her family’s desire to live a better life. My sister and I WENT TO COLLEGE and GRADUATED. We sought and secured employment within the 1st week out of college and have been continuously working ever since. Our children have followed the same route. We were poor (no car etc, lived in town so we could walk or take the bus where ever we had to go) Never owned a house but rented. Never asked for government hand out because as my mother said…that’s for the poor. As I see it now days, when the government creates programs (free) so many line up for the free gravy train this just adds to the burden on tax payers. My eyes are and have always been wide open to the stuff that goes on. I prefer to stay quiet, head down, work hard and be thankful that I ALONE achieved my own success.

I flew some 200 missions into Cambodia and Laos during the Vietnam War supporting Special Forces
recon missions. We flew with orders not to fire unless fired upon. We flew without identification and
our cover story was we were neutrality observers. I was put in for the Silver Star 3 times for the
recovery of Special Forces recon teams under fire and surrounded by the NVA. All three times our
helicopter was shot up at close range. While our entire crew was recommended for the Silver Star,
only the pilot received the award in each case. On one of these missions, I was shot twice in my flight
helmet and knocked to the floor of the helicopter. I recovered quickly and manned my M-60 machine
gun to find 12 NVA soldiers charging our helicopter with the intention of capturing our aircraft and crew.
I was able to take all 12 of them out in their charge. By the time we cleared the landing zone, I had
expended all 450 rounds of my ammo when we cleared the tree tops. Our helicopter had 16 rounds
that pierced it from nose to tail, but we made it back to the A camp in Vietnam. I received the
Purple Heart, and my recommendation for the Silver Star was downgraded to a Distinguished Flying
Cross for Heroism. These were top secret missions. Had the incident occurred in Vietnam I
would have easily received the Silver Star.

LBJ had his own sister deleted because she 'knew too much' of his illegal involvements, and he was afraid she'd blab. Great guy.

I know a man who flew Air Force One when LBJ was president. He said it was not unusual to see Johnson walking around the plane naked. He also would conduct press conferences while sitting on the toilet.

That's a great overview. Another book that goes into the subject with great detail, including statistics, is "Losing Ground" by Charles Murray. Murray was politically Centrist. He showed that Democratic policies that were instituted allegedly to reduce poverty actually caused the opposite effect. Crime rose as a direct consequence of those policies.

Since Mr. Murray is white, he received the kind of vicious abuse that, thank goodness, they wouldn't dare do to Dr. Sowell.

Much like the war on drugs. Since its inception the rate of drug abuse, drug addiction, and everything bad that comes with drugs has increased dramatically and in direct lockstep with the annual increased funding for the war on drugs. The more we spend. The worse the problem has become.

@@timothycormier3494 This might just be correlation, rather than causation.
There are a lot of other things that happened during that/this time period that might be the direct causes.
For example, the destruction of the family unit, which increases poverty and crime.
Poverty, for example, causes a lot of people to seek some kind of "escape".
A long time ago, that used to be almost entirely alcohol... until other things came along.
