Hey Khang - the trees look great! I'm finally putting in two asian pears this winter, a Shinko and a Chojuro. I'll have them espaliered against a fence. Can't wait. Once the cordons get established I'll probably graft some of the fireblight resistant varieties like Korean Giant (but I need to figure out where to get scion wood).
One of the things that I found super useful when pruning my apples (and probably other spur-fruiting trees like pears), is to do the major structural pruning in the winter (form, some thinning, take out all the diseased / damaged stuff like you're showing) and then during the summer months tip the branches occasionally to encourage growth of spurs. The summer pruning really helps you manage the ultra vigorous growth (especially balance between scaffold branches), but you might have to figure out a good time to do that to not spread disease (i.e. if it's raining a lot, can spread canker, fireblight, etc).
In the first year I also tie or stake the initial branches out at broader angles, which helps a lot for open center trees (the more horizontal I can get the branch, the stronger the crotch). The branches that I've gotten fairly horizontal make spurs very well when I do summer pruning. I really wish I did it for my plum / pluot / pluerry trees earlier, they really like to grow upright.

The active ingredient in Lysol is actually ethanol, an alcohol. That's the "-ol" in "Lysol " That's why it works for disinfection :)

Do you think I would have fruit if I had just a single shinseiki tree? Also what’s the difference between pruning in winter vs summer? My tree has a very tall central leader that goes straight up to the sky about 8 feet. Can I just chop it off to contain the height?

It is stuck in the corner and there is not enough space for it to spread. Do you have any tips on how to relocate it please?? The tree is about ten years old and healthy.

I really enjoy your videos! This week I started my backyard orchard. I planted 5 bare root trees, a 20th Century Asian Pear, Multi-grafted Asian Pear, Italian Prune, Lapins Cherry and Honeycrisp Apple. I also have a Pluot and Pluerry on order. Except for my Multi grafted pear, I cut down all my bareroot trees to about knee height so I can keep them small. At what point can I graft onto these young trees? Should the branches be a certain thickness? Also, I saw that you grafted a branch that had multiple branches on it. I have never seen it done before. I have only seen single stem branches used. Is there any rule to this? Is it harder to get the graft to take if it has multiple branches? Thank you!
You can graft any size tree. Many nurseries graft trees when they are very young. At 11:18 you will see a very small tree I grafted. It's best to use single branch because it will give better success, but you can totally do branch with multiple shoots. I do this all the time with great success.
Are you still growing any in pots only? My local Home Depot has 4 in 1 Asian pear. I’m tempted to get it but only have room for it if it’s in a pot only
Good morning KS, I have a question about pepper grafting. I want to gift some potted peppers to my family. My idea is to graft 2-3 different varieties into one. I was wondering if the varieties need to be from the same family or not. Thank you for the video, I'm not finished yet, I'm halfway through and I love your fruit trees. I'm about to order some of my own to plant this season.
not from my experience. I have grafted annuum onto Chinese and vice versa, and they worked.
Nice grafts... what rootstock are those Asian pears on? i bought two, chojuro and Shinseki last week on OHxF97 rootstock.
I believe is an European pear variety, but don't have the exact name.
I enjoyed all of your videos. I have been interested in growing Asian pear trees. I wonder if the Asian tree can be graft onto an apricot tree. It's best to graft pears onto pears. Trees not in the same family will most likely fail. I did graft an apple onto my pear and so far, the branch is still alive after almost a year. I don't know how long it will live, but it was a fun experiment.
How tall does the pear tree grow.
What are you going to use to keep the rust away? I spray twice now copper fungicide on my two Asian pear trees. How often did you spray the fungicide last year? Or even the dormant spray?

@@KhangStarr Spraying copper fungicide multiple times a year isn't recommended, of course in the same area.

They're somewhere right now. They don't come around when it's this cold. I should start seeing them again probably in April or May.

Best time for me is before the buds break, that's usually anytime from December - end of February.
