    Have you ever tried Summits on the air ?
    Have you been a SOTA chaser and helped a fellow ham activate a summit ?

    I subscribed to your channel because your videos are informative and practical. I have Parkinson’s Disease which makes the whole ham radio thing a bit overwhelming to me at times. I have my general license and was stressing about the whole issue of driving ground rods, bonding equipment, trenching nearly 200 feet to get to my household AC ground, etc. Then I found POTA and SOTA. This disease requires that I exercise 7 days a week to slow the progress so I do a LOT of hiking. I live in the high desert of Central Oregon so there are plenty of “summits” around here. Thanks for the info you provide and the quick guides you provide that will help me set up simple antennas, etc. I know this takes a huge amount of your time and I just wanted you to know that I appreciate it very much. Jim in Oregon

      Jim, you bring up a great point. There is really no need to stay home and operate when events like POTA and SOTA can provide not only the thrill of running the radio, but getting outside and being part of the experience. You have inspired me with what you are doing to stay ahead of the disease. Oregon is a beautiful state and to have a hobby like Ham radio mixed with the task of exercise, I would say you are doing great. Thanks for sharing your story Jim, and for supporting this channel. I could not do this without viewers like you. 73 Kevin

    You were celebrating 100 subscribers when you made this video ONE YEAR AGO!!! I glanced up to see how many subs you have today... 5.78K. OMG. I just passed my General license and got my first ham radio and I hike a ton... I am excited to put these two hobbies together. I don't even know what I'm going to do first... but you've got me so excited about SOTA that I don't even care... thanks.

    Hi Kevin! Great video and congrats about 100 subscribers!. You need only one QSO to have a valid activation; at the moment you reach the 4rth qso you can claim the summit points. 73 de LU1MAW, Alex

    It appears that you were using an older model Goal Zero Sherpa to power, however its hard to see how everything is connected. Is the GoalZero powering the radio directly or are you using it as an in-between for the radio and another battery? Im totally a fan of Goal Zero solar panels and chargers so It would be cool to see more details on how exactly everything is connected. New to the hobby and would like to make my own portable setup.

      Benji, welcome to the ham radio hobby. In that video i did in fact run the radio off of the Goal Zero battery pack.Goal Zero is a fun system, Over time I have migrated to a more affordable configuration. I do still have Goal zero gear I will see if I can put a video together with setting up that equipment to run a radio. Keep an eye open for that video and thanks for watching. 73

    I do POTA and BYOTA , (parks on the air and back yard on the air ) with a base loaded 17 foot antenna . I also do my own antenna designs as I enjoy doing it and it's really cheap with some wire or tubing as part of my designs . My next challenge is building my own baluns and ununs for different forms of wire or tubing antennas . 73's from KN4KBH in Georgia .

    Once upon a time, we were chatting with someone that had recently climbed up Whiteface Mountain near Lake Placid NY. I mentioned that we had also just been to the summit, and they were amazed. "Really? You climbed Whiteface too?" I responded honestly, "Well, we drove up to the parking lot, parked, and then we took the *elevator* up to the summit." While there, from the parking lot, I made contact with some hams in Montreal on 2m FM 146.52 direct simplex. Great fun. Similarly, Pikes Peak in CO, again from the car in the parking lot. Been up Mt Washington NH, but I don't recall getting on the air from there. Hiking up might be less stressful than driving up, LOL. 73.
    PS: On some summits, if you get hungry, you could stroll over the the doughnut shop for a snack and coffee. Don't knock it, 14,115-feet (4300m) is no joke. It'll make your head spin. 🙂

    If you think Single Side Band is fun, learn some Morse Code / CW ( Continuous Wave) for doing SOTA. It makes it more fun with less radio. You'll be amazed when you start getting distant continent and country QSO's. Europe is within easy reach.

    Good Stuff! I've been wanting to do a SOTA activation for some time now. I do some backpacking and really want to take my MTR3B with me some day. I bought it to force myself to become proficient with CW, so far...I am lacking some confidence and some head copying skills, but I am getting there. Be safe and 73.

    • @hamradiowithkevin
      @hamradiowithkevin  2 года назад +1

      The key would be to enjoy the operation, and head copy gets better. Try a drive up summit if you have any and make sure to use the SOTA spotter apps to ensure you get an activation.
