I made an afghan back in the 80's with the broomstick weave. Thinking of doing it again. Now in my 70's and wanting to crochet again, but have arthritis in hands. Giving it a go! Great tutorial!
I made my sister a broomstick lace afghan several years ago. She loved it. I am now making afghans for my grandchildren. However, I had totally forgotten the technique, so was thrilled to see instructions offered recently. My intentions are to use the broomstick pattern for the girls. Can't wait to get started!
Thanks for showing me this stich, when I was a young girl I remember making a baby blanket for my sister, now I'm thinking about making one for my son.
Thank you for posting this. My mom told me about my grandma using a dowel to crochet this stitch but she couldn't remember how. I'll watch it with her so she can remember and relive it.
So much easier to do then I thought - I’ve alway been so intimidated by this stitch I’ve stayed away from it - I certainly won’t anymore. THANK YOU for posting and for your super easy step-by-step instructions!!! You are absolutely wonderful lady!!
I’m thinking of using this stitch to make covers for plastic garden pots & seed trays, using jute or cotton cord. To turn unsightly into beautiful. Stunning stitch, thank you.
I’ve never heard of broomstick crochet until a friend passed on a very old crochet book. Your tutorial has made more sense. Now I need to find a needle large enough to give it a try.
You have such a relaxed easy style of teaching I found this pattern very easy to follow. I am now using broomstick crochet to make a scarf for my sister. It is not difficult to master this stitch so after the shawl I will make a wrap. Thank you so much for this tutorial.😊😉
Very clear tutorial. Thank you. Was teaching my daughter to knit, so carried on with a scarf there with a simple eyelet pattern. She joked about me showing off. Well, getting home, all the stitches had come off the needles, so restarted with this as I prefer crochet. This will show her what showing off is! 😆
I learned this stitch in my teen years - now am teaching my adult daughter - this is a great refresher - and teaching tool - I had forgotten little bits - I still have my original needle to pass on to her - thank you for the easy to follow refresher!!
Thank you for the tutorial - I think it would make an awesome outer layer for a tote - with a sewn fabric liner and maybe repurposed belt straps. Or with a cotton based or hemp yard - maybe just a open weave farmers market tote. I remember making this pattern in the late 1970s when I was a kid. Thanks for the reminder of its BEAUTY.
Beautiful.this stitch was huge in the 1970s.Everone was making broomstick lace and macrame..So happy to see it making a comeback.Hugs from Milwaukee 🤗❤🧶
An older nun taught this to the girls who were interested but I was the only one who loved it and understood it...she was patient 💯 I had forgotten about it so thank you for your refresher ❤
Thanks, I learned this stitch years ago, probably 30 years and have not crocheted in that long. I specifically made full, queen, and king-size afghans as gifts for friends and family members. It is a great way to keep warm in the Autumn and winter. I want to start doing them again and needed to brush up on the process. Great video tutorial and easy to understand. When I made them I kept all the loops on the needle and took them off 5 at a time. So I had the big plastic needle under my left arm and crocheted with my right hand, even though I am a lefty! My mom taught me to crochet when I was a kid and she made me learn right handed. It was so confusing at first but I did learn.
Thank you so much! I've tried to follow a written pattern a couple of times without success, but actually seeing it has helped a lot. Clearly one needs to do a lot of swatching before getting stuck-in to a final project! 👍😉
Hi Brittney, I just heard of this stitch not even an hour ago. I was very interested to see how it was done. I love it!!!! I haven’t thought of making anything as of now because I just learned about it. Your infinity scarf sounds like a great idea!! I will be moving AGAIN around the 5th of May so I just starting packing. I hope everything goes smoothly for me. It’s been a rough 7 yrs since my move to FL. When I get settled I’m going to give this a try. Your tutorial was explained very well. Thanks so much. Have a wonderful day ❤gayle
For one who has rarely crocheted… I didn’t make this blanket and my college years… I loved broomstick place… To me, it was the easiest… But almost 40 years of past maybe closer to 45… I have forgotten how to do the complete stitch in Rose… so thank you for the tutorial
Love this stitch, but I can certainly tell it will take me some practice to get the stitches even, but it really looks worth it! I really like to look of it with the roving yarns. I love the scarf and I can really see how this would translate into a beautiful spring shawl.
thanks for the clear explanations. I love to make sweaters from the top down where you cast on stitches for the neck opening and enlarge all the way to the arms. Where do I add my stitches?
I like to make baby dresses with broomstick lace. I make a yoke with single or double crochet, divide for the sleeves and add a few stitches in the underarm areas. In the next row I add about 1/4 to 1/3 more stitches for the skirt to make a multiple of 5. Then I do the broomstick lace for the skirt. For the sleeves I pick up stitches around the arm holes, do a few rows in single or double crochet, then a few rows of broomstick lace. I finish the cuff in a few rows of single or double crochet, decreasing as needed. I finish the neckline with either a row of reverse single crochet or some other edging. I have made this same type of dress for dolls using fine yarn and a pencil for the "broomstick."
Thank you so much for this video. I was wondering if you have ever tried to slip the loops off of the needle and securing bundles of 5 with stitch markers?
I get impatient with a lot of tutorials, but not this one. Thank you :) I'd maybe like to see it incorporated with other stitches in some kind of wall art. Just subscribed, looking forward to checking out more of your stuff
I am making a scarf with red/white/blue variegated yarn. I have not done broomstick lace in years. I am currently going through my knitting and crocheting stash looking for patterns to do. You know, a lot of scrap yarn piles up after 30+ years of knitting and crocheting.
Wow beautiful, Thank you for sharing a how to make it video. How about a video to make a triangle shawl or a jacket that can be worn to church or a fancy occasion.
I've just heard about broomstick lace on Facebook and thought I'd check it out. You make it look pretty simple! I'll have to try it out. Incidentally what would the UK knitting needle size equivalent
I’ve always wanted to do broomstick...my grandmother actually used a real broomstick..... I like your 2 nd option but afraid to try that 1 st but after I became comfortable I really do think it would be more manageable ❤️
After you have the loops on the large needle, could you spray with spray starch let dry, then take off to work the stitches in hand. I like to work with yarn in hand, not on a table. I thought this might make the loops stiffer. Thanks for your videos.

I think this would be really pretty as a lacy window covering at my cottage!
My great grandmother did this stitch and finding a video to learn how to do makes me happy. Thank you for sharing your video.

Easy to follow! Thank you. I'm making bracelets with this stitch.

You make that look so easy. It’s stunning. I love your hook. May I ask where you purchased that from please.
I was wondering if a hat would work. It would lovely with a scarf.
My mother made broomstick lace afghans for yesterday in the 70's and 80's. I never watched her so didn't know the stitch.

I would love to use this stitch in a shawl 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Would it work if you cast on the stitches on the big needle at the beginning (as though you were going to knit)?
I've just heard about broomstick lace on Facebook and thought I'd check it out. You make it look pretty simple! I'll have to try it out.
Incidentally what would the UK knitting needle size equivalent

Have you tried broomstick lace with yarn bee Eternal bliss or other chunky yarn?
Thanks, planning to hang a dozen spider plant babies on it on the back of a door (once I've unravelled the mess I made of the first row!)
How do you end your broom stick lace when you are done with your project
I'd like to make a pad to put under a fruit bowl or flower arrangement on the counter of my daughter's new kitchen.
I’ve always wanted to do broomstick...my grandmother actually used a real broomstick..... I like your 2 nd option but afraid to try that 1 st but after I became comfortable I really do think it would be more manageable ❤️
I had an elderly friend who actually used a broomstick as well. She sanded the end until it was rounded and smooth. She was from Poland.
How do you make really long pieces?
After you have the loops on the large needle, could you spray with spray starch let dry, then take off to work the stitches in hand. I like to work with yarn in hand, not on a table. I thought this might make the loops stiffer. Thanks for your videos.
