Probably would have been the better option

What brought you to the conclusion that you needed a new starter? I have a 2001 r1150gs and was running it yesterday...and today the thing will not start. Just a solid click when the start is pressed. I fear it is the starter. Ridiculously easy to replace but yet another $200. I suppose it made it 100k miles so can't complain too much

I was having intermittent starting issues. Sometimes I would push the start button and just get a click and after several pushes of the button it would finally start. If your battery is good and you’re still just getting the clicking noise then I would bet it’s the starter. Very easy to replace; but you’re right, another costly issue.

@@dadlifetexan I knew it was an easy fix but figured I would watch your vid anyway. You never know if someone has a secret trick. My poor old 2001 has been all over the country, Canada and Mexico. Sadly, I do not have the time I used to and with four dogs they are the priority. I am just tired of not having time to use things and when I finally do have the time something on it needs fixing, money and time. I sold my Yamaha FJR last year. It might be time to say goodbye to the BMW. Thanks for posting your vid.

FIRST OFF, ALWAYS DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FIRST!!! (negative terminal is best) ALSO: yes, you can absolutely remove, clean and/or replace the solenoid by itself, they are usually less than $60....
IF, you are going to work on your own bike, at least purchase the correct METRIC TOOLS>
PLEASE DON'T TAKE THIS GUY's ADVICE ON TOOL SIZING!! THIS IS A METRIC BIKE. Yea, you might be able to make SAE work, but DON'T DO IT!! you should REALLY be using the correct tools... IF you guys had ANY idea how many messed up and stripped heads of fasteners I have replace from owners that don't have a clue... METRIC Hex 6mm and a13mm socket actually, but a half will fit.a 13mm fairly safely... but a 7/32" Hex is only 5.5mm and if a bolt is TIGHT, it WILL strip the head out fairly easily...kinda strange to see someone using SAE on a metric bike... but no harm. ALSO, the solenoid IS able to be replaced... just all kinds of false info on this one.... ugh... but,.
MOST OF THE TIME, not always, but often, all you need to do is remove the starter, remove the solenoid, and clean the plunger, and throw out arm mechanism, grease the planetary gears, make it all work smoothly, reassemble and voila, it almost always works, mostly if you get a running starter that kicks out, or refuses to sping the motor. IF you are just getting a click, you may have to replace the solenoid.. or possibly the starter, but you can test the starter easily. Not sure why this fellow says the starter and solenoid are "ONE UNIT" because they most definitely are not.
ANYWAY, respectfully, because I appreciate you taking your time to make the video, but there is a LOT of cringe in this one... Rarely does a week go by that I don't have to deal with fasteners that a customer used the wrong tools on... ugh...
