  • Restoration of a huge antique meat cleaver from Italy. See this 100 years old and very raw butcher tool getting restored into a real beauty.
    THE RESTORATION PROCESS
I disassembled the shaft from the cleaver blade and welded the pin holes together. I sandblasted the back side and heated the metal to get the blade straight. Then a full annealing process at 879 degrees Celsius to reduce the hardness and internal stress in the metal of this meat cleaver. I grinded a new cutting edge in a 30-degree one side angle. After that I heat treated the metal and gained a 60-62 HCR (Rockwell hardness scale)
I did etch the cleaver on both sides and created a beautiful new handle of an old piece of hickory wood. I finish the project with a nice little laser engraving and some very cool decorations.

Wow, another really well produced video and incredible restoration! I've seen a lot of knife restorations but that's the first time I've actually seen anyone test the final hardness of the knife which is pretty cool! About the handle, well when you brought out the different wood options I have to admit I thought "oh cool, he's going to make a laminate from all of them!" - Okay, I've seen too many other "maker" videos LOL - not a fair expectation on my part. Your laser etching machine and skills are really impressive! I just hope you honestly and truly love this game, because I was a little worried you were in the end making a promo item which would be a little sad...
