Did you know that the very first discotheque in the USA opened in Reseda in 1975? It was called the "Silver Fox". It was on Canby, just north of Reseda and Sherman Way. My cousin did the logo for it, and gave me a copy of it, and told me the history of it. This same cousin of mine did the original logo for Magic Mountain, as well. Regarding murals, there are a lot of them in the Valley painted by painted by Fred Flores. His Calif plate was: MURALS.
I went to van nuys high...where fast times at ridgemont high and Valley Girl were filmed. The galleria was epic. LA vinacular took shape at the sherman oaks galleria. Words like dude, saying "like" at the beginning of everything..etc
Another great video Kurt. I really enjoy watching your videos. I really hope that your channel will continue to flourish. New locations and childhood memories. Well hope you and family are well. Thanks again Kurt. #80s#kurt
Another excellent video Kurt; I love watching your SFV VLOG's among your other fascinating VLOG's. I myself am 45 years old and grew up in Huntington Beach. My mom on the other hand grew up in Rededa and in Woodland Hills. During my youth, I spent a lot of time at my grandparents house off of Topanga and Oxnard. Many of the sites you have covered, I too have been to and I find that extremely exciting. I found it fascinating that the city of LA owns Malibu Castle. I have been there a handful of times and it only gets better with age. I was extremely bummed when Malibu Grand Prix went out of business. Driving those cars was the absolute highlight of my youth. There was a Malibu Grand Prix in Fountain Valley close to where I lived off of the 405 and Magnolia that shut down back in 1985 or 1986. As far as I know, the Northridge MGP location was the last one standing and I was only there once. I'm still in shock that it's now a car dealership. I find it very frustrating that the places we frequented during our youth are being torn down to put up overpriced apartments or outdoor malls. Sign of the times? I'm calling it what it is!!!!! At least the Reseda pool is still in existence. My grandparents would take me there on those hot summer SFV days to cool off;. I remember those days like they were yesterday. Your VLOG's are absolutely epic. Please keep them coming. By the way, I think you should do a meet and greet BBQ potluck with your local followers at some point at Reseda Park. I think some of your followers abroad would make it too. I would definitely be there. Thanks for everything my friend.
I really appreciate seeing these memories videos because in the 80's i was living in completely opposite circumstances. When i was a kid i used to dream about living in California but my reality was on the other side of the world in Sweden living in a small village of 22 people and freezing my bum off most of the year because we had snow 6-7 months out of the year.
The LA In A Minute stuff is genuinely very cool and I'm glad I'm now familiar with him and his work but I have to admit when I come to 80s Life I'm coming for the Kurt.
HAHA! Seriously, your stuff is awesome and I'm looking forward to checking out more of it. Super informative and also great to have the information about your first hand experiences. You and Kurt together have the world of vintage LA cornered! Really interesting and enjoyable for someone fascinated with that era/area but with no direct experience.
Fantastic knowledge and presentation, LA in a minute. BTW, a forgotten fact in the early history of the Galleria was that in 1981 there was a mid air collision of two planes in their approach to Van Nuys Airport, and one of them crash landed on the roof of the May Co. there, with the other plane damaged but able to land safely at Van Nuys. I believe the pilot of the plane that crashed lost his life. Didn’t dampen the spirits of the mall goers, though! 😅
I grew up in the valley went Nevada elementary, Lawrence middle school and Canoga Park senior high school. I love reliving my youth and love your channel. Thank you for that. Much love ❤
That Sherman Oaks Castle reminds me of a place called Castle Park that was in Aiea, Hawaii until around the end of the 1980s or early 1990s. Their two story castle also had an arcade inside with miniature golf, bumper boats, go-carts, and other amusements around it. I expected the guy to point out how that Reseda Country Club building was used as the Hott Traxx and Rodriguez Brothers dance club in "Boogie Nights."
Sucks that some these things change and now is just history. Even in state of Maine we lost alot of places also. Stinks.. because 80s and 90s was fun for me. And these days our kids will never have the that fun we had as kids..
@lainaminute I'm so glad you two have done an episode together. My 2 favorite YT channels, other than mine, in 1!!!!! Such good memories of the Valley, and the Galleria!!!! Great job BOTH OF YOU!!! 🌴🌊🏄♀️ 🏄♂️🌊 🌴 -J.s.
Remember the flood control channel off the I5 near Burbank that had Cat faces painted on the openings of inlets coming into the channel? Are they still there?
5:49 - Practically lived at the legendary Auditory Odyssey. Got Laurie Anderson's, "United States [Live]" 5 record set there (recorded at the Brooklyn Academy of Music), Gary Numan's, "Living Ornaments," live record set, Suburban Lawns (Su Tissue), Dead Or Alive, Thompson Twins, along with tons of other essential avant-garde, New Wave albums. Best time for music and movies. Again, love your Vaporwave intros.
Your edits are outstanding! OMG when Kurt roller skated by when talking about skating in the 80s I lost it!! 👻Amazing historical on the Galleria! I was wondering when we'd hear something about Frank and Moon Unit Zappa's Valley Girl! Well done as always! Really appreciate all your effort!
We'd go to the Sherman Oaks Galleria and try to run in to Molly Ringwald. The Sherman Oaks Galleria - like, and especially, The Beverly Center - was like the movie , "Brazil," on the inside. Everything was neon. Fast Future In Extreme. Haven't set foot on that ground since the original Galleria was demolished, and never will. Amazing and incredible history on the Sherman Oaks Galleria.
I love these videos. I used to live on Laurel Canyon in North Hollywood. I think it’s called Valley Glen where we used to live now but that was my first apartment back in 1984. I got a job at UCLA medical center and that was my first apartment with a roommate After we got married, our first house was in Reseda with my sis in-law and we lived two blocks from that rollerskating rink. My husband is Thai so we always went to North Hollywood to shop at the Thai markets there. In 92 we bought our own house. I had no idea the history of that rollerskating rink. Fascinating. 🥰🙏🏻
This was fun. I lived a stone's throw from ALL those locations at one point in time or another. I lived at Laurel Cyn/Riverside, then Vanowen/Reseda, then off of Sepulveda between Sherman Way & Saticoy, then just a couple of blocks from the big intersection of Lankershim, Vineland & Riverside for 17+ years, over to Cahuenga & Oxnard, & finally on Archwood/Radford where the North Hollywood Shootout ended before moving back to my hometown of San Pedro. Lotta good memories of the Valley. Last time I was in the Valley, I was sad to see that Tokyo Delves on Lankershim in Noho was gone! I think Ernie's Tacos right up the street is still there, though, if any if the girls working at Star Garden are retiring & wanna have a farewell party! ✌🏼
"Down and Out in Beverly Hills" I love your channel. I'm an 80s kid too. A movie I always liked was Down and Out in Beverly Hills. If you ever get a chance to do then and now for it, that would be great.
Great freaking job guys, if this is a simulation I hope I can get respawned in the 1980’s Los Angeles and be a teen. I’m a 1983 baby and a 90’s kid, we were the last generation of simplicity and we can relate to Gen-X because the 90’s had some similarities to the 80’s.
I think Douglas Emmett also owns the Trillium at the Warner Center. I remembrr going to the Cheescake factory there and some of the maintenance workers use to wear a Douglas Emmett uniform patch.
There really is no more Sherman Oaks Galleria. They turned it into office buildings after the Northridge quake. There's a few restaurants on the ground floor and a movie theater but that's about it.
@@mjwbulich Wow, that's sad and great at the same time. It's sad malls are disappearing, however it is great that some can be repurposed. Some former malls in the midwest have been converted into full office buildings...
and now they are closing down the movie theater at the Sherman Oaks galleria also :/ ..... i saw XPW Wrestling at the Reseda Country club back in 1999 ... btw cool that u got that sign !
HAHAHA! I didn't realize that was you on the skates until almost the end of him speaking. I was like, who's this clown on the skates? Does he know they're filming? LOL
You covered it more extensively in a separate video, but it could have been mentioned that the Country Club was used as the location for Hot Traxx in BOOGIE NIGHTS. The Sherman Square Roller Rink was used as Base Camp / Wardrobe where all the extras got dressed and made up for their nightclub scenes.
Speaking of Brody Stevens, I remember he and a guy named Teina Manu had a public access show up here in Seattle called Jews and Samoans Rule The World back in the early to mid 90s. Pretty funny and quirky and I was sad to hear he died. I had no idea he was from you neck of the woods.
I have passed by "The Great Wall of Los Angeles" almost every day since 2011 to commute to work but never bothered going near it. Maybe i'll finally check it out and see how inaccurate it is. You said dinosaurs in California despite the fact that dinosaurs never existed.
Another great video about our beautiful San Fernando Valley and all of its long storied history. I especially love Castle Park, love that place, so many memories of batting practice for Reseda Park little league at the batting cages and so many dates there. Kurt, do one on The Sandlot. You know the movie is based on a true story by the writer about his childhood in the San Fernando Valley.
I had a FANTASTIC time working with you, Kurt. Ton of fun and you even took me down memory lane. Love this channel and I love this video. Thank you.
Love your TikToks, Evan! Great to see you and Kurt collaborating.
Oh dang! @6:55! Sick collab!
So many punk gigs at The Country Club! Good times.
It was absolutely my pleasure! I look forward to doing it again. I love getting daily bits of L.A. facts. Thank you for that.
Dude you were totally awesome! Excellent co-host! Totally tubular dudes!
LOVE Helena Kallianiotes and the movie "Kansas City Bomber"!! Big thanks for this!!
*DELIGHTED* that you got the Skate and Surf sign !!!! That's *FANTASTIC* !!!
I almost cried from sadness about the sign and then, when you showed you had it I was sooo happy. That is a win for us all.
This was the best so far. I had homeroom with Brody from when we met at Sequoia Jr High thru 1988 at Reseda High. Great friend and great guy.
That was a whole lot of information. Thank you for the colaboration, enjoyed it very much. keep up the great work.
That was awesome that the vape store owner saved the skate sign for you 👍
Auditory Odyssey is where, after saving up my allowances, I bought The Beach Boys Endless Summer double album. Good memories.
What a cool collab I never really expected it
My favorite channel! Keep adding 90's movies to your catalog. Your channel has limitless growth opportunities.

You could donate that Valley Skate and Surf sign to the Valley Relics museum...
I've never been to CA but I wish the Galleria was still the same! Great video.
As always awesome content thanks for your time to do this video Kurt big fan of your channel

😹😸😿
Last time I was in LA, they were there... 2 yrs ago..
Thats awesome you were able to save the valley skate and surf sign...
Very cool about that sign use for a backdrop in your studio.
When I lived in van Nuys the arclihght that was at the galleria was my goto theater back in 2013 👌
Yoooo!!! Congrats on the Sign!!! I used to see that For Years!!! I miss that skate shop! 🙏 Excellent videos!

Dope. I had no idea. I pass all those spots every week
Nice background action during the Walgreens segment! 😁
Haha. Thank you. First time on skates in a while. Surprised I didn't eat it.
@@80sLife Would you have edited it if you had?
As soon as you showed the low riders my heart sank. I miss my Riviera 😭
I remember The Sherman Oaks Galleria back in the 90s!!! IT LOOKED TOTALLY DIFFERENT!! MY DAD WORKED AT THE UNION BANK BUILDING!!! OMG!!
Congrats on the sign! So cool!

I remember the Firehouse restaurant. They had a small arcade upstairs.
I WENT TO THAT HIGH SCHOOL DAMN THATS BACK IN THE DAY
4:50 As a kid we use to go to that 7/11 with $2 we would get the nachos and a slurpee. I lived on Sherman Way and Wilbur
I think Douglas Emmett also owns the Trillium at the Warner Center. I remembrr going to the Cheescake factory there and some of the maintenance workers use to wear a Douglas Emmett uniform patch.
It would be too cool to do a video on the locations in Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man! What a fun cult classic movie 🤘
Very interesting! I always thought those Valley movies were shot in the Glendale Galleria. I haven't been to the Sherman Oaks Galleria in years...

Radical 🔥🔥🔥
I miss Brody. Not only a hilarious guy but a legit baseball player. RIP
Spuds! Had an og spuds wallet for years. Gave it to my boy before he passed. Not sure where it is now. But I kinda live in the land of the lost.

Hey! Friend, Do you have any plans to make a video on the locations of the film "Tommy Boy" with Chris Farley? Sorry for my english.
I remember in 93ish that my school was offering tickets to Malibu grand Prix I thought it had two locations though
Have you Been to Valley Relics Museum

Hey Kurt. Did you know the guys at Kennedy Surf? Did you ever hang out at Scotland Yard pub? Can you cover those? How about Jim's Meats on Fallbrook?
amazing videos brother and Celt Pride
I remember one time me and my cousin
We wr at the Sherman oaks galleria and we met dolly parton she was filming an after school special
The song Valley Girl was written about a real teenager. It says her name in the song. I sat behind her in school.
I'm shocked that wall hasn't been tagged! I'm glad i dont see any Graffiti
Evan looks like the older Johnny Lawrence.
Wow, haven't seen "JIMMY'Z" for a minute. We used to call it , "Jimmy Zee" back in the day when we didn't know any better.
