I've seen one or two whom I will lovingly support going forward (Aimee Lou Wood is a lovely human being) and have actually looked at what going on. Otherwise they've mostly been (largely unknowing but no less irritating nor condescending) perpetuators of Israeli propaganda and I've debated just restarting my Instagram account rather than unfollowing dozens of people.
Unfortunately not everyone is Jane Fonda. Actors care more about the optics of their politics than the politics itself, so it's skimming through a file brief and surface level understanding.
Celebs should be able to say what they want. My problem is when they expect us to hold their opinions higher than actual experts.

Well it’s just that some people take silence on a topic to mean that you don’t care about it.
That’s why a lot of people were compelled to use the hashtag blacklivesmatter on social media even if they usually didn’t talk about politics. I remember even official accounts for mobile games coming out with a statement about it.
Celebrities rely on popularity, so in order to please those people and to appeal that they care about human rights and social issues, they feel compelled to share their opinion on it, I don’t think it’s always out of ego.

I think celebs are dammed if they do or dammed if they dont. I have seen some celebs stay out of politics and fans will demand an opinion from the celeb. And when celebs give an opinion then people will switch and say they have no business in sharing their opinions on politics. 🤷♀️ i do think that celebs need to do extra researching before sharing their opinion to make sure they arent misinforming the public. However, with that said fans cant be mad when celebs comment and the opinion given isnt the one fans wanted.
I have no issue with celebs talking about whatever they genuinely care about. And hopefully are informed about. Problem is that majority of their actions/words are performative ''whatever you want to hear''. I believe majority of the loudest actually votes red too, because it benefits THEM while BSing on social media about their values because that is what sells. So it's a win-win for them.
One thing that I hate about the internet is when people straight up harass random celebrities asking them to talk about very complex and specific political topics because "they have a platform and need to use it for good". A random pop singer will never be able to contribute positively to such a complex discussion. Find a person who has studied and specialised in this topic and repost their stuff! What's so concerning for me is how few celebrities recognise the power of their platforms and how dangerous that can be. We all have a responsibility for what we share on social media, but when you have 100M+ people looking at you, you can't afford to be that careless. You can't afford to have such a low level of media literacy skills. With an influence that reaches that far, spreading misinformation just reproduces ignorance in other people

While everyone who has access to social media should be educated in media literacy, this should also include those in power-such as influencers, celebrities, government officials, etc. Common folk can’t be the only ones to uphold that responsibility, especially when those who have influence have power to change people’s opinions and beliefs.

I have been thinking about this a lot, and I just would rather people speak wisely than speak at all. I try to put my ideology where my money can impact it because I think that matters. Who is raising money, who is trying to make actual change, rather than who just wants to speak in the moment. And sometimes we may not know who is who, but WE can choose the person we want to be and I think that is the better work.

I’m a mix of fatigued and desensitized tbh. Whenever someone I like says or does something questionable, it never surprises me. After the way celebs showed their asses during Covid and the George Floyd protests, I’ve learned that there’s some artists / creatives etc. who are great at what they do. However, I’d never want to meet them or know them personally because there’s a high chance they aren’t a great person. Like Khadijah said, there are limits. I definitely have mine, and I feel like they’ve been pushed heavily the past few years 😅

It’s very disappointing and concerning that celebrities, politicians, and high level influencers are not doing their due diligence when making statements about current political/social issues. Spreading misinformation and reports that have yet to substantiated just add more fuel to the fire and creates more harm for innocent people. This isn’t just a Palestine/Israel problem, it’s an international problem that has gotten worse with social media corporations not regulating the misinformation being spread on their platforms.

I think it's silly to care so much about someone deleting a photo. That was like 3 days after 1,200 people were humiliated and killed in Israel. She came out for a ceasefire months ago.

The majority of celebrities pay to have people write statements for them or make their living memorizing words written by people smarter than them. Some of them are stunted, didn’t graduate from high school or pursue post secondary education. I don’t get why people look to famous people to speak on important issues, they’re not the brightest. They’re insulated and protected by their wealth and it shows all the time

I thought we all knew in 2023 that being “book smart” isn’t the only type of smart that you can be/exists. Of course, a lot of celebrities probably don’t write their apology statements, and have other people do it for them but I seriously doubt most people (even the ones who did pursue a secondary education) can write as eloquently as a person who is literally paid to write, including most of us. So saying that this is the reason they are not “bright” to you is…..🤨 And I seriously doubt most people actually remember the things they learned in highschool or college (other than that pertaining to their career).

Palestinian people are specifically asking us to break the wall of silence on Israel's genocidal actions against them. Celebs hiding their support for settler colonial projects isnt helping us, that information is valuable.
for me, it depends on the situation. if it's something that personally affects them or they have had experience with it in the past/present/etc, then i'm perfectly fine with them talking about it. however, there are a LOT (and by mean a LOT especially this past week) of instances where i'd be fine if they just donated, put out links to donate, or gave platforms to those who are FAR more experienced on certain topics than they are.
eta: i'm also of the opinion that as long as there are ppl talking about it (this isn't a dig at you or anyone else talking about this ofc), i don't think it will ever truly die out. people kept talking about how celebrity culture died out because of the pandemic, but idt it ever did. just the way we talk about them has shifted because of it.

The events of the past week have been shocking, deeply saddening, and quite frankly barbaric. Celebrities who have been personally or otherwise affected by these events have every right to mourn publicly, and deserve our greatest empathy and compassion at this difficult time.
What I can't abide, however, is accusatory posts demanding that black people unconditionally support retaliatory human rights abuses against civilians by a government containing convicted racists, and the escalation of a conflict that has already claimed far too many victims as a sort of "exchange" for support for BLM.

I find this video interesting, especially reflecting on the artist I appreciate the most, Trent Reznor, and his departure from Twitter late last year. It's interesting because Trent would probably view the platform as pretty important to himself since he met his wife on there. He was also one of the earliest celebrity adopters of Twitter, creating his account in 2007. I'll leave you with this quote from him on why he left, (To note he is talking about Elon Musk in this quote)

I’ve always been a big fan of Trent Reznor as well. And for a white boomer dad from Pennsylvania (I know he’s on the cusp, I’m being tongue in cheek) I think he’s doing ok! In earnest, he’s generally spoken responsibly and genuinely throughout his career. And he’s departure from twitter just emphasizes his character to me.

No, not this issue. For other issues, sure. But what's happening in Palestine isn't complex. It's pretty f×××king straight forward. It's ethnic cleansing, it's genocide. It's collective punishment. It's illegal war crimes. lt's killing people by carpet bombing them. It's cutting off their resources of water, food, gas, electricity, etc. and then telling them to evacuate but then bombing that route bc now they're easy targets. It's bombing shelters, hospitals, schools, and homes for the ones who remained sitting ducks due to injuries or fear of going outside.
It's cutting off medical supplies and pulling international aid. It's lying about 40 beheaded israeli babies in order to justify killing 1,073 palestinian children. It's dropping huge clouds of illegal white phosphorous in densely populated areas to burn the eyes, skin, & lungs of anyone that it comes in contact with. It's getting caught doing that and then Israel lying that it was used as a "smoke screen" - yeah bc we're supposed to believe an illegal substance is better than using ACTUAL smoke. They're not even trying to pretend anymore that they want to wipe out Gaza, who are trapped in an open-air prison. Idk what is so complex about genocide. What do you have to think about? What is so complicated about calling out a historical wrong?
Why wasn't it complex to acknowledge the Holocaust, South African Apartheid, and the Great Indigenous massacre, but all of a sudden Palestinian genocide is complex? That's what I've been saying for a while. I remember people cancelling celebs because "they didn't talk about some world issue quickly enough" and I'm sitting here like... WHY do you need an opinion of a celeb/influencer??? I was dismissed then cause people's argument was that they have a platform therefore they should say something. But in reality most famous people probably know jack shit about an issue at hand so why should they even open their mouth to potentially spread misinformation like you said and make clowns of themselves? Some folks rely on wrong people to get their news or form an opinion from. Your idol might be your role model but they ain't specialists on world politics, sweetie. I would really respect more celebs if under pressure from public they said something like "I'm not educated on a topic enough to speak on it" instead, well, what we get usually.

I think part of it has to do with more of the younger generation being class conscious and realizing that no matter how progressive or revolutionary a celebrity might be, that it's probably incomprehensibly rare for any celebrity to actually be about it, due to their lifestyle, wealth and how badly they want to keep it. Of course, I see that as reasonable due to mass parasocial relationships that could put the celebrities in danger if they don't stay inaccessible with their home property and security assets.
I just think of Fred Hampton and how he and many revolutionaries lived and died in poverty, yet seemed to accomplish far more than anyone who was unwilling to sacrifice so much. That's not to say everyone should sacrifice as much as they did. It seems there's a direct relationship between how much you sacrifice (especially with the more privileges/resources/institutional-power you have) and how much change you create. Hopefully more people will be willing to sacrifice in their own ways towards liberation.
This video puts to words a lot of what I've been feeling, given recent events. I think it's important to remind ourselves that we don't need to have an opinion on every single little thing. If boots are on the ground and someone is in relevant community and they're doing the work, then absolutely, It's good to care and it's good to talk about it. If you're not in the conversation though, it can come off as elbowing your way into the room and yelling over someone else, and it's easy for the desire for relevancy to drown out that this action can typically be seen as just plain rude.
For me it depends. Like if they’re actively out there working, advocating and putting in the work and actually believe in what they’re talking about, then I think that’s fine.

That was a very necessary video, especially in a time when there are VERY serious events happening that will define history forever. Seeing celebrities share their opinions with a clear side on the situation showed two different things: 1 They're very unaware and unknowledgeable about the issue. 2 the side they picked knowingly show their true colours. I try to rely on the first one so as not to be constantly disappointed

this is something i have been thinking about for a loooooooong time. it actually makes me angry when i see a comment demanding a celebrity to share their opinion on something like politics or urging them to use their platform.
i don't go to celebrities to be remindend that the world sucks. i go to them for ENTERTAINMENT. get my mind OUT of these topics by entertaining me. don't bring them up.

US celebs seem to have exceptionally little knowledge regarding what Israel has done the last hundred years.
I just want to ask that we call the Palestine situation what it is: genocide, not war. This kind of language is so important in preventing the active misinformation of Israel being able to garnish support for this genocide in the name of "defense" in a war, rather than an ethnic cleansing of a group living in apartheid.

There are plenty of people that are really good at there jobs but, celebrities are essentially worshipped because they have power. Which equates to influence and riches. Call me jaded but my broke ass is not trying to celebrate someone simply for being rich. I appreciate entertainment and craft. I can commend someone for that but there are regular folks that are also good at their craft. I don’t think that influence equates to intelligence. I’m over celebrities on podcast as well. I’m OVER IT 😂

I think it’s a case of reality meeting expectations. It was easier to have a larger-than-life, detached image in the older days, but the more of someone you get access to, the less mystical they become, and we learn in some ways they’re like us, but in many they’re also not. Disappointment becomes more and more inevitable and predictable.
Celebs like Marilyn Monroe could hide their trauma and complexities behind the scenes until it caught up with them in deadly ways, that has noticeably become harder to obscure as we’ve seen with Britney Spears and other celebs in our messy modern media 24/7 state we live in. I think Dolly Parton has benefitted from the distance she maintains, rather than capitulating to the sense of urgency to engage where gains can be made if played right.

I have a different experience of the pandemic because I went into treatment (for mental health stuff) two weeks before shut down and we weren’t able to watch the news, have our phones, no internet access, etc. and so I’ve never, until this video, seen that footage of celebrities singing Imagine and now… well, now I’m realizing that my time in treatment/not having the normal pandemic experience was even more of a blessing than I realized. The way my whole body cringed watching those clips. I shudder 😬
I've never been into celebrity worship but I can recognize their potential value. It was afterall thanks to John Stewart that that bill to help veterans exposed to toxins. It can't always be just shut up and dribble.
Celebrities being regular people is always hard to swallow because like Khadija said "they are being elevated by institutions" and that really is what makes them so unrelatable. It's not even about their fame to me it's about their class position. Talk to people at a country club and they are just out of touch as any celebrity and ultimately they are out of touch for the exact same reason.
Yes I tried explaining to someone why Taylor Swift isn't "relatable" and I wondered why I had to. Obviously they are not relatable because they just live in another world.
I just find it interesting/amusing that celebrities will tarnish their own reputation and legacy over politics they could have just kept to themselves - like JK Rowling or Kanye….sometimes less is more.
I'm not sure if this is a neurodivergent thing or not, but outside of documentaries and the like I just can't bring myself to care about the personal lives of celebs, not even the ones in my own fandoms and shit. This obsession with knowing every single detail of a person's day to day life just because they're "famous" is really confusing to me. I will say that celebs NEED to do better about making sure they are well informed on important subjects before speaking out.

I think a lot of our want of celebrities to talk about world issues is because we want to know that they care about others the way we care about them/their work. It's comforting when someone you look up to stands up for people who can't stand up for themselves, so we would like that. For myself, I often wish I could have a platform so I could use it to try to better the world since people would actually hear what I say, so I can find myself frustrated when people who have the means to do that don't. But the ones that speak out are often uneducated and just put their initial thoughts out there, and as we know that is problematic. After reading some other comments here, I really like the idea of people with platforms sharing what others are saying about things, specifically people directly affected or experts on something. That is actually much better than sharing your own views, since you can give more accurate views to your platform while also helping others find more information to educate themselves more. Of course you can still say your thoughts, but more of an effort should be made to show people more perspectives and not just your own, even if it is informed. So instead of using platforms to support those without them, it is more useful to give those people time on the platforms themselves. I think it would be great if that was common for celebrities, but since social justice may go against their interests or some just might not care, we can't expect it. We can only control ourselves, we can help educate and inform those we know, and if more of us do that then maybe that's enough to help create change. While people at the top can spread a message the fastest, a message in support of those at the bottom might be better received if it comes from the bottom. Hopefully that all makes sense if anyone reads this, that's what I'm thinking after watching this video.

i think what really frustrates a lot of people when celebrities talk about politics is that they tend to do it from a place of superiority or 'talking down' to the general public, as if they are somehow better or more informed than the rest of us simply because they have a platform to be heard. Celebrities are so used to being the centre of attention that it just comes across as entitlement.

For me, I take issue when celebs don't use their platforms responsibly- when ANY public figure doesn't acknowledge and hold accountability for the power and influence the have. And unfortunately, they do have to be more cautious and practice more due diligence. It may not be the responsibility they wanted, but that's literally what comes with being a public figure.
I think we underestimate celebs being paid to spread misinformation they can move much like politicians or pawns because they do have so much influence and also act from their best interest. There's a narrative to see celebs largely as victims lately but to an extent they actively still persue that lifestyle etc
When we hold celebs up to some bar before allowing them to discuss politics, it raises the bar for the rest of us as well
And it somehow lowers the bar for politicians, who end worrying more about how they’re being perceived than how their actually affects people

Celebrities are people with a bigger microphone, and that is the only thing that's makes them special. They can say whatever they want, but their celebrity cache does not protect them from consequences.

There's a Wisecrack video about much the same topic as this here, and the top two comments on that video were both quotes: one about how celebrities need to shut up, and the other from Bono about the charities he endorses. I mean, given power, who wouldn't use it to try to work good in the world? But I hadn't considered the idea of a constituency or a soapbox for fame, as you'd called it, and now it makes sense that people get annoyed when celebrities talk about things they really have no business commenting on. Some things affect them (actors' strikes) but other things not so much.
I hate how things are complicated. But I am also glad I'm not really involved in celebrity gossip, so all of this is theoretical and outside my circle.
That last part needed an extra 20 mins🤣 its exactly that. We get distracted and disappointed when celebrities dont share our views. The reality is, we need to unify the community, not the celebs. At the end of the day, they cater to the public majority in the fear of getting cancelled. They just reflect a larger issue. We shouldnt focus or home innon them. Yes we should try to support ethical/moral people and have a high standard (subjective ofc) but also not make them a focal point of any social movement

Love this video. My husband and I were just talking about this and how the celebrities we really like are generally the ones who (I hate the say it this way) know their place and stay their lanes. I don’t want to know their opinions. And yes, they are just people and often out of touch people at that. I agree that non-authorities should hold back on sharing their opinions because they risk missing their platforms. But I don’t know if I like the idea of calling for utter silence from celebrities. It’s still their right to share their opinions because sometimes they can go good by shining a light in a subject that is otherwise not garnering enough support. The scary thing about that is when the subject is a bad take and then leads to morally reprehensible sects feeling bolstered.
My stance: a wise celebrity should use their platform to raise up the voices of experts. Basically, say the source and that’s it. Don’t take credit. Don’t act as if it’s a novel thought, because celebrities are by and large not thinking for themselves on geopolitics (same way most of the public isn’t, I am also guilty of this and I get flack from my spouse who is far more sceptical than I when I regurgitate half-baked ideas).
So. Is it realistic to believe that celebrities will act morally responsible regarding their lack of knowledge and thus make efforts to lift up more trustworthy voices? No.
But we can choose to share only the soundbites of celebrities doing wise thing: redirecting questions on current affairs to legit experts whose platforms don’t have as great a reach as the celeb in question. Aka cite sources!

The only reason I don’t care about celebrities stances/thoughts are because I don’t ever hear them. I don’t follow them and don’t engage in conversation with others about them. I don’t even have a celebrity I would be that excited to meet. Just doing my part to help out with the public’s part of this equation.
Maybe it’s the fact they rub elbows with people who do real harm to others. Like certain cast members of That 70s Show. We might just be at a point where we want to support good people who support good people. 🤷🏼♀️
Many celebrities either center themselves or can’t acknowledge how they’re complicit in a lot of issues that they’re speaking on. Many post fundraisers but can’t speak on how the system that cause the need for the fundraiser are still in place! Truthfully all voting age US citizens are complicit in the issues that harm us & people in other countries today! Especially when activists consistently warn, give solutions, and scream for help and assistance!
Celebrities are humans (and just like ALL of us in this comment section expressing our opinions) should be allowed to share their thoughts and opinions too.
We don't have to agree or endorse what celebrities say. Not every thought or opinion is well-informed or educated, because those uninformed opinions might be necessary to spark conversation and genuine learning for some people.
I don't think it's healthy to exclude ANY person from conversations on things going on in the world that WE all live in.
We need to avoid policing others, but rather focus on what we say, what we do, and how we treat others in person and virtually. It's easy to be an armchair thought police officer and ridicule those that have different opinions to us.
@Mira-rc4df8 Celebrities arguably have more responsibility when they speak, but it’s unrealistic to assume that they will always say the right things, even with a PR team. We audiences should also hold responsibility for remembering to not take celebrities too seriously and teach children the same.
