  • Magpul vs. Lancer - Side by Side Mag Torture Test
    I recently uploaded a video titled "Why I WON'T Be Buying Anymore Magpul Pmags" (link below). I received a lot of hate for that video. So I decided to find out which mag was tougher, the Lancer L5-AWM or the Magpul Pmag. I've made up my mind. What do you think? Thanks for watching. Be sure to like and share.

      "reliable" and "durable" are different things in this case, look up "Will the US Army Adopt the Magpul PMag? US Army Explores Procurement of “Polymer Magazines” [NDIA 2017]"
      various branches of the military have performed a battery of tests and found that the m3 pmag is the MOST reliable, even hilariously more reliable than the EMAGs that the army made specifically to be more reliable than the old usgi mags. lancer mags were among the worst in reliability.
      many departments and branches are dropping lancers and moving to pmag
      clearly these drop tests show that the lancers are more DURABLE however, or at least seemingly so. I also know the pmags eventually suffer feed lip fatigue (which is why they come with the plastic caps), i have a few AK pmags that did not come with the plastic caps and over 2-3 years of competition use and keeping them frequently loaded they are already starting to malfunction
      so it does not seem like there is a clear answer as to which one is "better", personally i stock up on both. as with any investment, diversifying is a good idea

      @@EIGHTY7graphics, it is a fair point to say that one should expect their "tools" to be able to take a beating, and if they cannot, then they are unreliable and should be replaced, though I would agree that it is not entirely necessary to be torture testing the rifle to get his point across.
      Still, I would rather have a Magpul than one of those Lancer mags if they drop rounds that reliably. And I would be willing to bet that the Magpul PMAG would still feed properly, though I would not want to rely upon it outside of a dire situation and then, just the once, after that it is in the trash and a new one in its place.

      Drop your rifle and mag falls apart dumping all rounds, baseplate, follower and spring?
      Or drop a mag by itself and a couple rounds pop out?
      You be the judge.

    Being a Mechanical Engineer (4 year BEME) with extensive knowledge in molding, metal stamping and FEA I'll throw my experience in on this. Looking at the Lancer, being translucent, I can almost be sure they are using polycarbonate. There could be 5% glass fill in the material. I have a very strong feeling by looking at both, the magpul has up to 35% glass in theirs. The reason for this is the strength called creep / rupture. Over time polycarbonate will begin to deform while under a load. Magpul adds the glass to add strength to this property so they do not have to use metal for the feed lips. Polycarbonate alone would fail very quickly. I also upon cutting a section of plastic from the Magpul there is a blend. They may be adding polyamide to the mix also. Polyamide is the material electrical connectors are made from under the hood of your car. This is one tough material and if made of just 35%GF PA, it would bot break but you wouldn't be able to afford it either. Polyamide as a film is used to wrap electrical transformers and as cooking bags for you Thanksgiving turkey. This material can withstand temperatures up to 400F with no affect on it's properties.Plastics can withstand momentarily loads far exceeding it's normal operating stresses, meaning it will "bounce back" so to speak and have no lasting damage or result in failure. Glass will diminish this property in plastic but offers rigidity and extended load capacity over time. Aluminum also has issues with accumulated stress I don't have the time to get into.On the test you did, it was done in a non scientific manner. Dropping the mags by hand will never result in the same forces. The vectors change the resulting forces drastically. I believe you did prove the point that there are issues with the Magpul Gen2 but this is the reason they have revisions. Drop to destruction test do not prove everything as time and exposure also weighs in. To be accurate the test needs to be done in a fixture with a dead fall weight so every mag gets the exact same exposure to forces. I can give you formulas for impact for drop but you also have to factor in the stopping distance. Did each mag have the exact same play and spring force in the weapon? This will make an astronomical difference in the exerted forces. Heat from the inside of a vehicle can get up to 170F down here in South Florida. This alone can cause failure of poly w/o glass while under a load.Let me know if I can help out. It is interesting and helpful for someone to take the time to make this video.Thanks,Robertformer 1/75th Ranger Bn, 10th SFGA.

      Thanks for the insight. I think that this test plus the gen3 test has told me all I need to know for now. Lancers and gen3 pmags for serious use. Gen2 and aluminium D&H mags for casual use. The big takeaway for me was how much difference there is between a gen2 and a gen3. For me a pmag was just a pmag and I didn't pay much attention to what gen it was. I think there are a lot of people out there that don't know. Thank you for your service.

      Won't deny your a smart cookie. However, how a mag functions or fails in a combat environment is the deciding factor. 100% of all combat takes place in the field, 0% in a controlled environment. No two drops will ever be the same in combat. The test seems sloppy in a way, but it is very real regardless.

      I know that...I broke 2 M16's while in the 1/75th Rgr Bn. We dove to the ground head first slamming the butt stock to the ground and direct the roll direction so when we get up for the next advancement we do not rise on the same but alternating sides...you live longer. Rangers have the absolute best IMT in the world. We could tear up a carbide bowling ball in a padded room... The army did drop polymer mags a while back. Lockheed gave us a few of their newest rockets. We strapped them on our rucks and went to the field for 2 weeks. We met up with some reps from Lockheed and some Army admins after that. Everyone of them failed to fire. They tried blaming us, but we told them this is the way we operate. We don't baby gear. It has to function or we don't use it. We were still using 90mm Rocket launchers designed for WWII in the 80's. It's just a steel tube...can't F it up...

    I was initially skeptical of this video, so I decided to go out and test this for myself. Magpul has a lot of QC blunders from time to time so I was think your mag was one of them. So I took my rifle and my PMAGs, stripped the ranger plates off two of the 4. Brought 2 lancer mags. I decided that dropping them from my shoulder hight 5’4” wasn’t enough. So I stood on my truck bed and dropped them at 9 feet. The Regular gen 3 PMAG survived 2 drops and 19 drops, both the gen 3 with ranger plates survived all 20 drops and one lancer cracked up the spine rendering it broken at 4 drops. The other survived them all as well. The mag catch ledge on all magazines had some damage. The gen 3 regular magazine that survived 19 drops failed because the mag catch had gouged its way out and the magazine wouldn’t stay inserted. The other notable thing was one of the gen 3 with the ranger plates developed a crack completely from the spine to the mag catch. The lancer that survived had a slightly out of spec feed lip that wouldn’t like feeding rounds on the furthest side from the ejection port. I have handpress for steel mags from being a PMI in the Marines for a bit and that brought it back in spec enough to run flawlessly. If it was the apocalypse I’d pick the PMAGs because I could fix them with super glue or tape. They are admittedly brittle now. I emailed magpul and they are sending out 2 new magazines after wanting pictures. Lancer hasn’t responded but I’ll update when they do.

    Thanks for the vid. Don't know that I could drop one of my rifles to test like this. But, I have one question. After the PMAG broke on the first test, and was obviously damaged, would it not be a good idea to grab another PMAG to test. That way any idea of a "bad" PMAG would be eliminated. If the second had the same issues, the point is proven beyond any doubt. Kinda sux as I have some PMAGS put aside for that day in the future. Does seem that I either need to be sure and not drop my rifle or consider Lancers or other backups. Seems that GI issue mags should be somewhat safe in this test. Again, thanks for risking damage to your gear to show this!

    With that said, I appreciate you putting more weight into the drop than a loaded mag. I have a stack of Pmags for my 5.56/223 wylde guns, but exclusively run L5AWMs for my .300 guns... I'll duplicate this on my own (maybe I'll buy an airsoft gun of similar weight or something, since some will surprisingly seat magazines).
    I'm not ready to give up on Pmags entirely, but I'm thoroughly impressed by the Lancers that I already own. My biggest beef is a trivial one, that is blind reloads potentially chewing up my magwell... Which, in the grand scheme of things, is about concern #501 when it comes to magazines.

    Left one in my freezer, ran over it 3 times, left it in salt water for 48 hours, left it a brass polisher over night, multiple loaded drop tests, gave it my dog to chew on!
    Fired-reloaded and fired again 4 times.
    That’s 120 rounds out the same tortured mag and ZERO malfunctions!

    thank you for your time and effort.very insightful and helpful.
    i love P-mags,both 2nd gen and 3rd gen models for their smooth loading, feeding and good looks. and their ruggedness and reliability,i thought. while ive never had a problem with mine i rarely if ever abuse my equipment to that extent.its good to know what they can and cant take however.
    i also use the Lancers and really like the steel feed lips.i feel they offer important advantages over the P-mags and others in this area.
    while they do not feed quite as smoothly as P-mags (no steel/aluminum mags do) mine have never caused problems in use.i have noticed they will lose control of the top round on the rearward stroke if you slow stroke the charging handle.they always feed reliably anyway but it is something to be aware of.you shouldnt baby the CH anyway.rack that sucker like you mean it!
    i also use Troy magazines and find they feed very smoothly as well. i hate their floor plate design with its 3 locking tabs instead of everyone elses interlocking rail design.they seem good though.
    another mag im testing is the ProMag RMR roller mag.ive owned it a while now and from what i can tell its an excellent mag in all respects.very smooth loading and feeding,it has a very aggresive texture that looks good and works well.it seems to be a very good option. it is about 3/8" longer than other mags however.
    and finally i use Magpul yellow followers in standard G.I. aluminum mags which work very well.not quite as smooth feeding as polymer mags but good durable and reliable running nonetheless.
    and can take extreme temperatures and other abuse without a whimper.any of these mags will serve most folks very well. but looks like the Lancers are the top dawgs for extreme use.thanks again

    Oh my goodness, that was painful to watch. Who drops their entire weapon on the magazine? This seemed atypical in any form of use. 20 years military and I never dropped my weapon like that. I do like the results of the mag drop only as this simulates dropping the magazine to reload quickly.

    • @McCl3lland
      @McCl3lland 8 лет назад +28

      To be fair, I liked the test because it's reminiscent of "what if you have to drive for cover on an uneven surface, and the mag hits the ground." My time in the military, I never dropped my weapon like that either, but I certainly have 1) taken spills and 2) unceremoniously got the fuck down lol. So I see this as potentially viable, and it could devastating to have your mag spray your rounds everywhere.

    • @mikhalize
      @mikhalize 8 лет назад +2

      I guess it may be possible to break a Gen 2 by diving for cover, but what are the odds? I will admit that even the possibility was probably why the Gen 3 mags reversed the base orientation. I run my 40rd P-Mags rather hard, and never had a problem. Still, with all the new mags coming out, I just can't stomach the high prices.

    • @MaverickSpawn
      @MaverickSpawn 6 лет назад +1

      I agree on some points but one. No one ejects a full mag and let it spill to the ground. AND IF BY SOME CHANCE, they are in a combat scenario, you shouldn't be standing up while reloading. You should be behind cover and low visibility. That's my two cents, but overall I enjoyed the vid.

    After watching the whole test, I agree with your assessment. Personally, I do not think the test was necessary. In the earlier videos, you were merely expressing your opinion. I glad it was justified, but sorry that you had to prove you opinion to the detractors. The only thing that I would have added, is how you oriented the mags to drop them (just say fairly loudly) whether you were dropping them on the 'lips', 'floor plate', 'flat', or 'side' etc. especially for those of use who are watching on a fon, not a large pc monitor.
    EXCELLENT TEST!!
    CONGRATS!
    I hope the detractors are satisfied & go harass a different site!! you had to have said 'in my opinion at least half a dozen times in the earlier videos & said that you would continue to use the other mags. Some people are just looking for something to complain about!!!

I am not a pmag diva but am happy to see that you found a good alternative other than standard gi mags. hex mags are nice along with the troy battle mags but they are a lil flimsy for my liking. Your pmag lasted way longer than my tester did. I go straight to the feed lip drop, because that's what separates the weak from the strong and because I try to avoid dropping my ARs. The Pmag feed lip started to crack at 7 drops, and it puked out all of its rounds on the 7th. My Lancer tester has survived 30 drops on concrete, right on the feed lips, and all kinds of abuse like hitting it with a hammer, hurling it into a propane tank, stomping on it, etc. The only issue it has developed is that it doesn't drop free too smoothly, kind of like yours, but it still runs like a champ.

    • @CountryBoyPrepper

I say get 5-10 lancer mags for your every day use mags and stockpile basic non-window pmags after that, at the end of the day you'll have several hundred dollars in your pocket and no appreciable difference in performance.

      @edwardhellwig4501 8 лет назад

      I'd say that was pretty conclusive. I don't have a rifle. yet (saving for an SKS), but can you describe the different mags for us dummies? For instance the Magpul seems to be all plastic (no matter what they call it) while the Lancer appears to be plastic reinforced with metal, but I can't tell. exactly where

    • @GlassWolfLH
      @GlassWolfLH 8 лет назад

      The body of both the Lancer and Mapul magazines are thermal plastic, but the magpul uses molded plastic feed/retaining lips, whereas the Lancer uses metal lips molded into the plastic, which makes the lancer a bit stronger. In regards to the floor plates, I haven't looked that closely at the lancer design. I have a couple dozen gen3 magpuls, and use ranger plates on them, so dropping them probably wouldn't do as much damage, but who knows. I like the lancer mags.

A good rifle can be treated like that often and last years with the obvious maintenance. Unless you’re one of those people who wants a rifle for its pretty looks and not it function lol

    I just took a look at the way my Magpul's lock and stop in the magwell. I have 2 SBR's that I built with billet Black Rain Ordinance. The back edge of the bottom of the magwell comes into contact with the tab on the back edge of the magpul mag. I do not believe you could ever drop the weapon enough or high enough without doing severe damage to the weapon. The contact area is about 5/8 inch wide minus the 1/8 inch rib. The edge of the magwell is tapered. This will cause the mag to be wedged in the magwell and further aid in impact resistance.I checked a forging I have plus another billet from Arizona Ordinance. Both of them also stop on the edge on the back of the magwell plus the pocket for the mag release.I don't see how any of mine will break a magpul...I'm sure as hell not going to drop mine on the road. I'll try to get into a lab where I used to work to get some impact measurements. I can invert it on the top rail and drop a weight on the mag....I'm getting curious now.See if yours has the tab or the magwel in further away than mine. Mine is less than 1/2mm from toughing when the rounds are loading the mag under spring force.Robert

      They're tools. I don't care if I ding the face of my hammer up or scuff the handle, I also don't care how much I scuff the hell out of my carbine. Function test, Scotchbrite the burs and dab some black paint pen on it, CorrosionX when dry. The Technical Manual doesn't even call for painting it, just scrub shiny spots with Scotchbrite and top off with film forming dry lubricant if they are found after function checks.
      Most everything I own aside from collectables is scratches, holsterwear and scuff marks covered with spray paint and Birchwood Casey touch-up pen.
