      As someone who is interested in playing the Pikmin games which would you say is good for someone just starting out?
      Ps I usually don’t like things with time management but maybe I wouldn’t mind this kind in Pikmin?

    • @wizawhat
      @wizawhat  Год назад +9

      @@gmg9010 I typically like to recommend the first game as a starting point because its not super long and serves as a good introduction. From there you can kind of figure out what you like and don't like and play the others accordingly. If you don't like time management and multi-tasking though, Pikmin 2 and 4 are more focused on playing at your own pace and exploring the overworld and dungeons. Pikmin 2 is a bit frustrating for its own reasons though.

    I've honestly never cared that much about the auto-lock. People complain about it a lot, and I do understand why (it is annoying on occasion) but I didn't mind it that much. HOWEVER, the benefits it has for Dandori don't matter because I already knew how to instinctively use the lock-on trigger to do the same thing from what I learned in Pikmin 3 Deluxe.

    The biggest complaints people had of Pikmin 4 were its lack of multiplayer oppurtunities compared to previous games, as well as its control scheme being a poor evolution of pointer controls that most people preferred to use for playing the first 3.
    To me, as someone who always preferred the gamecube style stick controls, and someone who could never convince any of his friends to play Pikmin let alone engage in multiplayer, this mattered very little to me.
    But as someone who has been a diehard pikmin fan since 2005? Pikmin 4's evolution of the formula in both is Metroidvania overworld design philosophy and its evolution on the cave formula made this my GOTY. This game came out on release day more content rich than most other games and fully finished, and it was excellent to 100% start to finish with a nice meaty difficulty curve in the late game, especially for all-platinum medal runs.

    For Pikmin 5, they should reimpose a time limit that can be extended like in Pikmin 3. But take a page out of Pikmin 2's book and have it be because the company is in debt, perhaps with Louie being "busy" with Olimar, the president had to instead he the one to deliver the shipment of golden pikpik carrots with the huge twist being that the actual is attacked by a ravenous space bunny. By paying off a certain amount of the debt you earn back more time from the loan sharks until you have paid off the debt and go to return to Hocotate. But in a surprise twist, this time it's Olimar who gets unexpectedly left behind, perhaps kidnapped by the Plasma Wraith. So it's now up the the president, Louie, and maybe even Moss to find him and collect more treasure, without a time limit this time.

    • @avocadothecat

      All on board with that as long as the enemies are actually hard. And, don't beat me up ove it, leave the dog out - or make it an optional easy mode option so everyone's happy. Oachi in 4 just took so much away from what I appreciated in Pikmin I wouldn't mind if it stayed a one time feature. But everyone loves him - so I'm sure he'll stay. So my proposal is making him optional.
      Other than that your pitch sounds like the best Pikmin game ever ngl.

    I must say, Pikmin 4 is not only my entry poin in the entire series, but also my favorite.
    It´s not my first Pikmin, that honor goes to Pikmin 2. But Pikmin 2 never made me want to play the other games in the series. I didn´t want the time challenge of Pikmin 1 and I didn´t want to multitask three Captains in Pikmin 3.
    But by integrating the time challenge with Olimar´s diary, by integrating the multitasking with Oachi and by integrating challenges in its campaign, Pikmin 4 finally got me to play and fall in love with the entire franchise. And I´m endlessly grateful for that!
    But, while I love the whole franchise now, Pikmin 4 still sits on the top. It has so much content and so much variety in its campaign. Despite its length, this is the game I want to replay the most right now. I really love Oachis flexibility and utility, I love the open areas, the freeform exploration and also the night exploration. The caves were my favorite aspect of the game with their small bite-sized puzzle challenges. I wasn´t bored even a second of the game!
    Yes, the game lacks challenge most of the time. But since this was more or less my entry point after not having touched the franchise for many years, this doesn´t bother me. I see the games as more as cozy games that I play to relax, not to improve or challenge myself. That trend continued with the pretty laight-back camapaign of 3. And with all that experience under my belt, even Pikmin 1 was a breeze for me. Only 2 gave me problems and that was more frustrating than exciting for me. I stopped playing after repaying my debt, I must admit. Kinda ironic. The game I played and loved first is now my least favorite one.
    And so, Pikmin 4 has a special place in my heart by introducing me to Pikmin 1 and 3 and open the gateways to one of my favorite franchices now. It´s definitely my Game of the Year 2023 and sits very comfortably in a spot of my all-time favorites of all time.

      It's great that Pikmin is starting to have a much wider appeal, to the point in which you can be interested in it more as a cozy game built around the exploration, while I can be more invested in the timed challenges, and the game can still be great for both of us. I think that's a good sign the series is headed towards a better future! Really glad to hear that Pikmin 4 encouraged you to go back and give the others a try!

    To throw my hat into the discussion of where this game sits in the timeline, I agree that pikmin 4 is mostly just a reinterpretation of the first pikmin game, with pikmin 3 also still happening roughly how it happened before.
    The biggest difference in the timeline to me is that pikmin 2 has been “reduced” for lack of a better word to just the prelude to pikmin 3. Instead of the original timeline where olimar pays back the debt, returns home, and then comes back again for another debt, those 2 visits are now combined into one. Olimar and louie still go on wacky adventures together but now cleanly transition into the plot of pikmin 3.
    Like any interpretation this isn’t airtight or anything, but it works for me in order to condense the timeline while leaving room for each game to shine and not leave out anything too major. A lot of what happens in 2 basically happens in 4 anyway so reducing its scope doesn’t change too much.

    • @wizawhat
      @wizawhat  Год назад +4

      I settled on my version of the timeline because there's dialogue and clues that make me feel as if the events of Pikmin 2 just don't happen in this universe, such as how Olimar and Louie refer to each other as well the bad dreams entry in the voyage log.

    Pikmin 4 was unironically everything I wanted it to be and more. Like, I wanted the next Pikmin game to involve survival game elements, specifically the building of items and structures with materials you have to collect. The game could have kept being like Pikmin 3 outside of that and I would have been extremely happy, but then they brought back caves. My favorite thing in Pikmin. I had as high of expectations as I could for a game and Pikmin 4 blew them all out of the water.

    I think Pikmin is a series that has now found itself. It knows what it wants to be and how to accomplish that, for the most part. I cannot imagine this series not using Pikmin 4 as a template moving forward. It has some rough edges to smooth off, of course, but none of them, not a single one, seems so core or eggregious that solving those problems would create conflict with the new the course Pikmin 4 has (hopefully) set the series on. Pikmin 4 surprised and impressed me greatly and for the first time, I am looking forward to future games in this series.

    In the past I only played Pikmin 1 on Wii. On Switch I got all of them, so I was able to play each game in order right after each other. It's fascinating to see how they got technically better. And I would say that Pikmin 4 is overall my favourite. But I really dislike the dandori duels or battles or whatever they are called. The split screen and the constant messages in the middle of my screen really make it a frustrating task. So I was never excited when I had to do one. I like the other type better, where I have the full screen and just have to collect everything in a timelimit. The problem with the text is also significant for me in the night expedition. I don't know why different characters feel the need to bombard me with tutorial even later on and tips that aren't too helpful. I think those should've been optional or it would be better if they would be at the top or bottom of the screen. The auto targeting is also pretty frustrating in some cases. Mostly when there are a lot of enemies and the auto target keeps targetting the corpses. Otherwise it's an awesome game and I can't waut for Pikmin5.
    Funny how in the past when playing Brawl I couldn't care less for anything Pikmin related and now I own the whole series on Switch and are some if the few games I actually played through right away. Nowadays I tend to pause playthroughs of games, if too much time goes by, I forget some things and restart from the beginning. That's how I got Xenoblad 2 on launch and still haven't played past chapter 3, even though I started it 3 times already :D I gave up on that franchise so I never got the other games. It's just not for me. But I'm a big Pikmin fan now :)

    The pikmin max count restrictions helped me get used to controlling and splitting up larger numbers of pikmin, improve my efficiency at multitasking. Where before I’d previously grab 100 pikmin and steamroll all the obstacles as a large group, I can now command 5-6 smaller groups of pikmin to complete objectives faster without losing track of them. The big issue though is the game doesn’t really take advantage of that great multitasking opportunity by the time you reach 100. There should at least be a dandori challenge or two where you have a full army of pikmin and need to split them up extremely efficiently to get the job done.

  • @lasercraft32
    @lasercraft32 8 месяцев назад +2

    imo the Night Modes should have had endless waves of enemies. If you kill all the enemies on the map the night automatically ends and you win... If the waves were endless and got harder each wave, then it would TRULY be about _surviving_ the night, and would have kept that danger and fear of nighttime established in previous entries.
    Cause as it is, it suddenly makes Olimar (and every other captain in the series) seem silly for leaving at night when its so easy to just fight the hostile creatures that come out in the dark. I know they need sleep and all, but when you're stranded like Olimar was you would use all the time you can get to work on getting home to your family, sleep be darned. Nights in the Pikmin series are supposed to be scary enough that you would literally leave behind any Pikmin because it was too risky to wait for them... Now they just seem like impatient jerks for leaving them to die. :/

    Unfortunately I think it’s possible that pikmin’s bad sales is not just the consoles they’re on fault. I think the main reason the series is so niche is because the game doesn’t make you make understand if you know what I mean. Whenever I hear someone complain about pikmin or say they dislike it I always hear the same thing it’s ether “boring” or “too hard”. Then I look at their gameplay and it’s terrible. Most people think that multitasking or dandori is an optional part of the experience, but true pikmin fans know dandori is the game. That’s why when people review pikmin 1 or 3 they say it’s hard and say pikmin 2 or 4 they say it’s boring it’s because they’re not playing right. They’re not using dandori.

    If I had to complain about 1 thing in the game, it would be the waiting. The caves feel like constant interruptions to the flow of the game. Once discovered, instead of continuing to play the game, you just gotta wait until the pikmin finish their tasks instead of doing more fun dandori, then go into the cave, in which case, every single sublevel is just that same thing. Just standing at the exit, waiting... I feel it really goes against the design philosophy.

    • @wizawhat
      @wizawhat  Год назад +6

      So one thing I find interesting about that criticism is that having time to breathe after clearing a sublevel in Pikmin 2 was something that made those caves so effective. The tension was so high that once you could you knew you could move around without fear of triggering any traps or enemy encounters, you could take a quick break and collect yourself before moving onto the next floor. Because Pikmin 4's caves lacked that tension for me, I agree with you, that waiting period felt more tedious than relieving.

    I liked everything you did say from 0:47 - 0:53.
    My only problem is that it is mandatory, and that Auto-Lock is too aggressive. Early on the game, a bunch of Skitterleafs appear from the sky inside a cave. Upon dying, collecting the bits around them becomes a hassle as there is no actual way to choose what to collect. The game does it for you.
    Not only that, but Auto-Lock also prevents tossing excessive Pikmin, a problem shared by the Disband feature. Only the right amount of PIkmin will carry an object, but there were many times I wish I could've added more so the object would move faster. There is a workaround, yes, but that in itself is a hassle as that wastes time, which, in my opinion, goes against the idea of Dandori.
    Regardless, Auto-Lock definitely clicked with me eventually and I grew to like it, but I personally believe it should've been an option, along with the ability to add more Pikmin as desired.

    In my opinion, the timelines are entirely separate, with the original pikmin timeline being the same, but with the pikmin 4 timeline beginning with olimar’s shipwreck tale, and then going into pikmin 4 and then into an alternate version of pikmin 3, since there are a couple of things that don’t line up, since in pikmin 4, oligarchs already knows Louie, while in pikmin 1 he doesn’t, since Louie was hired during olimar’s 30 day absence from hocotate, meaning that it can’t simply be a slight retelling of the bad ending of pikmin 1

    I'm late to the party but I wanted to ramble about how this game is a joy for someone with severe ADHD, I can play it without my meds and actually be really good at it. There's a thing called 'choice paralysis' which is pretty straightforward. When there's a LOT to do (like a lot of treasure to collect) we can get pretty overwhelmed, our brain will basically bluescreen or freeze up and it's hard to pick things back up again. Add a time limit and it's *hell*. Because of this the first game is basically unplayable for me. Pikmin 4 though? chef kiss, here's why.
    Despite Pikmin 4's stages being really open, the lay-out is basically a map of branching paths and shortcuts between them, allowing the player to basically 'sweep' each map area by area. The musltiple base locations helps us mentally divide the map into sections, making them more easy to tackle. The way this game handles music and audio that adapts to what you're doing is also a great help especially when it comes to notifications. The game will ALWAYS tell me if something happens while I'm not physically watching it happen or be completed. This may seem like a basic QOL improvement but it's basically my lifeline. Not having to guess when my pikmin complete something allows me to better plan and as a result it lessens the chances of me experiencing choice paralysis.
    Once I realized the potential of Oatchi I became pretty much unstoppable The game now allows me to divide the massive amounts of little tasks present in a map into chunks of: Heavy objects, areas I need jump for, elemental enemies/areas, narrow passages/iron bars etc. Being able to sort of mentally slap these challenges into a chart of who could handle it better, whether they're captain or pikmin, it makes it so much easier to learn the art of dandori.
    TLDR, The bane of my existence as someone with ADHD is choice paralysis, when there's too many things to do in a short amount of time, and yes this game is super accessible because this game grasps the one technique it would take medication, therapy or even a combo of both to learn. Dividing into smaller and smaller chunks!

    Pikmin 4's problem with Oatchi's overpoweredness is what I like to call the "Castlevania 4 problem". A new ability or new power up that makes you so much stronger that past entries challenges and enemies fail to catch up and th exact same thing happened with Castlevania 4's 8-direction whip

    For my, this game has been a. Major disappointment. At every opportunity, it feels like the game is taking away all of my choices and freedoms. I am very curious to see how this game is viewed as time passes. Will it continue to be loved, or will the love fade? There are many things about this game that make it hard for me to love. To keep it short, I hate the voiceless custom character stuff. I enjoy playing games as actual characters. The game holds the players' hand way too much. I got Skyward Sword vibes very strongly. The game makes too many decisions for me, such as what I lock on to and how many Pikmin types I can have at a time.
    If this is Pikmin's future, then I'm probably opting out. It just doesn't feel like Pikmin to me.

    Regarding the narrative, I think Pikmin 4 tries and surprisingly succeeds at feeling like a re-boot or a re-interpretation, and a mere sequel to 3, all at once.
    The re-interpretation theory is perfectly logical and sound, and probably what nintendo wants newcomers to see it as. But at the same time, with a biiiit of mental gymnastics and a lot of analysis of previous games, it IS possible to put Pikmin 4 shortly after Pikmin 3, without retconnign anything. You just gotta look past characters (Olimar included) not mentioning the events of any previous games, and talking about Olimar's shipwreck sorta as if it was the first time. It is never explicitly said to be the first time! But mentioning the previous adventures in the franchise is avoided in a plausible yet unnatural way.

    I don't really understand the auto-lock hate. I've played through the game twice now, and it's locked onto something I didn't want it to a few times in 60 hours of gameplay. I guess it makes the game easier, but I've never understood the perspective that the entire Pikmin experience needs to make you grow grey hairs. RTS games (even military ones made for boys TM) are cozy adjacent. I have never in my life beaten a game 100% because why in the world would you? But I 100%ed Pikmin 4 because everything felt necessary and accessible. For every game mode to be worth completing is an insane achievement for any franchise.

    I just wish it wasn't so easy... and I don't like Dandori battle. I don't think I ever will. And Auto lock on... And the excessive tutorials.
    Also screw the Pikmin type limit. And I wish there was 2 Captains and not a dog. I am not a dog person and I don't like how he trivializes so many things. So not much to get out of him for me. Yes, I already did a run with using him as little as possible... It wasn't really satisfying either. Yes, I am aware that's a me problem. It's not a huge deal but it's there.
    Maybe I am not the target audience for Pikmin 4. I like it still. I don't hate it, despite all the flaws (I have with it). I have 100% played through it 3 times. Still, fantastic! But I preferr 2 and 3 still.

    Is it bad that I dislike Pikmin 4? Pretty much everyone on the internet is praising that game as modern gaming masterpiece but I believe that it lost everything that made the original Pikmin trilogy’s charm. The game is way too easy. I am not exaggerating one bit when I say that I never felt challenged in the entire game outside of stupid sub-level in the Sage Leaf Trial where you had to kill 99 enemies in a minute with 5 Purple Pikmin. This impacts the game very negatively in my opinion because it makes the caves (a consistent chunk of the game’s campaign) a boring chore as everything gets obliterated by Oatchi. Also, I cannot get over the fact that Nintendo rebooted the franchise with Pikmin 4 while I waited 10 years to see the continuation of the teaser Wraith-based plot initiated in Pikmin 3

    Pikmin 4 is a hard pass for me despite good gameplay. Really disliked the reboot angle, there are better ways to reach new players while appealing to the old than difficulty nerfing and retcon pandering.
    The one note cutesy, derpy humorous vibe along with the large quirky cast really detract from the ambient moodiness and air of mystery of the early games, which was an essential component of why I loved the series.

    The fact that you can just leave a cave at ANY point without losing any progress at all... I mean, at that point why even have caves? Why not just put that content on the overworld?
    It's no longer an endurance test, it's no longer randomly generated... so what's the point of it being a cave?
    Sure, time moves slower in caves, but it's not like many of the caves are all that long anyway and there is no longer a limit for the number of days... It gives you the illusion of being a challenge, but in reality there's no real failure state. Even if you play so badly that you lose all your Pikmin, you can just leave and jump back in with another 100 Pikmin and continue right back where you left off. Not even the drops of nectar disappear when you leave a cave. It's a joke!
