I hate to say it but raising the minimum wage also raises the poverty limit. When wages go up, taxes go up, prices go up, and everything else goes up. All of the benefits go to the state, and federal government with increased tax incomes from income tax, and sales tax all across the board. This will eventually drive out more people and businesses. California is caught in a bankruptcy spiral where it can no longer control its economic woes. This also benefits the unions and labor controls. This will spill into service restaurants and a repeat of the same dilemma. Fast food restaurants were jobs for school-age people wanting a little cash during school years, not careers.
My first "real job" was at a company owned Taco Bell. I was young. For a brief time I thought this would be a career. That thought was brief. Even if my pay was the equivalent to $20 at the time, it wouldn't have changed my mind. I put in 1 1/2 years at the place and moved on to better things (by far). There's nothing wrong with these jobs, but these are stepping stones, and are best for young people. Working the front line, kitchen, cleaning, etc., at a McDonald's, Taco Bell or Jack-in-the-Box is not a career. $20 isn't going to get you the American dream. Record breaking profits from the "top firms" is not the same as franchise owners. I have a friend who's parents own 1 McDonald franchise. Over $3 million in sales but after food cost, supplies, utilities, insurance, franchise fees, payroll, etc. They profit about $200-250k a year, that is less then 10% in the total sales. I cannot confirm how many employees they have. But let says they have 30 employees x $16/hr x 40 hours = $1 million in payroll. Raising minimum wage by 20% = increase $200k in payroll. Say goodbye to that $200-250k profit.
Too bad not too many people understand this... Everyone is looking at the large corporations record profits and thinking that they should share that profit. They keep forgeting that the corporations makes money off franchise owners whether they are profitable or not. So franchise owners are the ones that suffer...
Exactly McDonald's corporate is a real estate company, and gets franchise fees based on revenue. What does that mean in an inflationary environment? Corporate level profits regardless of franchise level problems. The corporate bottom line only gets hit when franchises begin closing on mass.
McDonald’s is rubbish I have friends in tech make more than franchise owners and McDonald’s is supposed to be one of the best ones yet they have so much expenses, food service ain’t worth it low margins with high costs and labor and too much work. Your lucky to take home 8% of gross revenue.

@@alfredgeorge3186 You misunderstand how businesses operate. Jack n the Box is mostly operated by franchise owners. The owners invest a ton of money in their establishment. The franchisees do not make a lot of money. They are considered small business owners backed by the Jack n the Box corporation. The franchise owners are already planning on closing numerous locations because of the wage hike. Higher prices will cause less revenue. The corporation will not allow their profits to plummet from franchise owners closing their business. They will automate to replace their workforce.

I need for the rest of us to get a raise as well. There are people with degrees that need raises as well. CNA’s aren’t even making that much. This is wild.
The higher wages doesn’t have to mean higher prices. It’s just the corporations would dare lower their profit margins or take a hit for their workers. Businesses would sooner willingly go bankrupt than reduce their profit (or CEO salaries + bonuses) by even 1%. The wage increase isn’t the problem. The problem is corporate greed. Period
Again, most corporations aren't being impacted. Their franchisees are impacted. The franchisees will have to find a way to absorb the costs or figure out a way to cut costs.
Big fast food chains will: 1) Pass the added costs to the customers. 2) Cut hours and/or employees. 3) Sacrifice quality for cheaper ingredients/supplies. 4) Close shop and move to another state. Businesses will never compromise their earnings, bonuses and salary raises to favor the lower part of the food chain.

Margot is clueless as to how anything operates. Costs are up at fast food restaurants because commodity prices are through the roof. Food stuffs cost more today than they did even 2 years ago. Labor costs are exploding because of these wage increases that are being mandated. Fast food work is supposed to be entry level not a career unless you are getting into management. Rent, insurance, utilities have all skyrocketed recently. Cause and effect. Targeting the franchisees isn’t the way to go after the companies.
$7 for 1 Pretzel ??? That's insane.
Everyone is DESERVING of a living if they work hard! Nobody seeks a career in fast food. Many fast food workers have degrees.
WHY DO YOU HAVE 6 KIDS???

Man they make a killing in profit.

The franchise owners are already planning on closing numerous locations because of the wage hike. Higher prices will cause less revenue. Big fast food chains will:
1) Pass the added costs to the customers.
2) Cut hours and/or employees.
3) Sacrifice quality for cheaper ingredients/supplies.
4) Close shop and move to another state.
Businesses will never compromise their earnings, bonuses and salary raises to favor the lower part of the food chain.
