  • This is the first video in my new series titled "Catch, Cook & Culture" where I blend my experience as a forager and foraging guide and my PhD in anthropology to explore all facets of culture through local wild foraged foods! In this episode I am joined by my friends Chan and Sarah to forage the rocky tide pools of the San Francisco Bay Area for eels, rock crab, mussels and turban snails. Then Chan teaches us to make a traditional Mien SE Asian pepper sauce with a mortar and pestle. This is a catch and cook that you will not want to miss!

    My friend Lauren had a good question I wanted to pass along - should people in the Bay area region be worried about particularly polluted or potentially toxic beaches that should be avoided? Obviously the bay is a big shipping port and there is plenty of boat traffic, oil, and runoff from populated areas. Are there any concerns for harvesting species from these areas and/or places you advise to avoid just due to man-made waste in the Bay Area?

    When I saw your title "Catch, Cook, and Culture", I knew exactly where you were headed.
    As a huge fan of coastal fishing You Tubers I have become much more familiar with Asian culture, something I sadly missed out on spending a lifetime in Idaho.
    Yes, we have buffets but that's a culture within itself.

    Kevin, Lao Beer is the one of the ten best beer in the world if not the best of the best. I love drinking them when I travel to Laos and so do westerners who go there. I like the improvised bamboo pole and hook. I have not tried fishing for monkey-faced eel yet since I met you at Fort Bragg.

    I make a similar pepper. Garlic, Thai chili pepper, cilantro and salt. It's good as is and or as a base. Similar to Chan's you can add tomatoes or lemon/lime or both.

    Nice vid, I did not catch where chan was from. Was it Laos? We have sauces like that in Thailand but honestly that one looked better. I never thought to include what looked like a bunch of cilantro. I make my garlic and Thai chili based fish sauces and put it on fried fish all the time, I absolutely love the combo.

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574

      Yes, Chan's Mien family migrated to Laos and then eventually to the US so the recipe reflects that journey. The sauce was absolutely awesome!

      Thanks! You need a valid fishing license, can only take 10lbs per day (which is a lot), cannot use tools (hands only) and cannot take them in an MPA or SMCA. I would suggest that you go asap as these are the last tides of mussel season. Mussel season ends in a week! Please call the pre-recorded message on the Biotoxin Info Hotline to be sure that shellfish is safe to consume in your area 800-553-4133. Good luck!

    Just found your channel. Where is this area and what was the tide level this day?

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574  2 месяца назад

      As a rule I do not disclose specific locations to help safeguard the sustainability of our local spots. If you check the Cal Dept of Fish and Wildlife's Fishing Regulations Map it will show you areas that are not ok to forage and those that are ok. Cross refernce this with public access and areas with rocky reef and you will be on the right track. If you find a productive spot, please keep it quiet and do not geo-reference photos or name the locations on social media to keep poachers away. Good luck out there! This was a -1.1ft low tide.

    Was wondering, where do you get a poke-pole?
    Did you make it yourself? And if so, how do you make a poke-pole?
    If bought, where could you buy one?

      The first time Chan made it for me he mentioned that when people are anti-MSG he makes it with just salt. Give the sauce a try and omit the MSG if that is your preferance. It will still be fire!
