    Don't worry about what others think about you. If you ever feel uncomfortable, park it. There's not a load worth your life.

  • @kevinhilnbrand1373
    @kevinhilnbrand1373 6 лет назад +550

    No load is ever worth your life, or the lives around you. Never has, never will be.
    Personally I would have covered some ground. But only you know your skill level. If you have the time, which you did, and you don't feel comfortable driving in it, then don't.
    You are the captain of that truck, had you chosen to drive and bad things happened that responsibility rests on your shoulders at that point.
    None of these keyboard warriors would have been there to bail you out of a bad situation, but I bet they would have been the first to jump in your parking spot.

    You need to keep enough food and water in your truck for at least three days in the event you get stuck for several days. I got stuck for four days once had to survive on what I had in my truck. Luckily I was prepared. And keep a thermal blanket with you. Drivers have run out of fuel and froze to death! Be safe!

    My last wagon was a W900 limited edition, 2 beds , TV, DVD player, had a remote to the radio, fridge ,microwave, coffee pot . Only time I got out in bad weather, go to the little boys room, shower carried 14 uniform sets , plus regular clothes, 725 hp kitten, 18sp road ranger ,373 tears gears , carried plenty of food and hydration. Was sad to retired from medical reasons

    Something I learnt during my first year of driving in snow and I would like to share it with you and all of my fellow truck drivers....... In snow try to wear safety vest or dark color clothes. Grey and white clothes blend in with snow. I’m sure a lot of you agree with me on that. Thanks to all and be safe on the road. Respect

    Just finished watching a few of your videos about shutting down in the blizzard. I thought it was funny when you got dressed to go inside. It looked like you put on about 20lbs. I was also very impressed to see a young driver like you actually shifting gears! You also seem very safety minded which is a good thing. As far as dressing for the weather, buy yourself a Carhartt brand coat and bibs and leave them in the truck. You won't need them in SoCal but you'll be glad they're around in situations like you went through in Nebraska. Drivers like me from the "snowbelt" rely on our Carhartt stuff to stay warm and dry. I always spray my Carhartts and my boots with Kiwi brand camp dry to waterproof them too. Be safe out there kid!

    as an adult I hate dealing with snow in terms of driving and getting things done, but man is it beautiful. isnt it funny almost every kid wishes for it all winter long? anyways, I think its really cool that you stop to enjoy the little things. Its funny to watch the madness of a snowstorm from some kinda shelter, with strong winds and heavy snow, it looks/feels like chaos. but then you step out into it, and its eerily quiet. kind of a weird thought but it always blows my mind. best of luck in the coffee biz

    • @44R0Ndin
      @44R0Ndin 5 лет назад

      You know the reason almost every kid wishes for snow all winter long, right?
      With enough snow they close the schools, and almost every kid likes having an unexpected day off of school.
      These days I still like when it snows, so long as it snows slow enough that they can keep the roads clear. A few years back around here in Binghamton, NY we got two and a half feet of snow over the course of around six hours, which shut everything down for the next two days. They declared a state of emergency for it IIRC, you should be able to look it up by that if you're interested.

    A good Sherpa lined long jacket and some cold gear under cloths / socks would be a good addition if you are going to be doing those runs on a regular basis. Heavy insulated boots might be in order also.
    I have been stuck on the 80 in Wyoming during a blizzard and I swear I thought I would freeze to death. Had my Ford Bronco idling and the heater full tilt but was still cold as a witches tit on the mountain pullout I was on. I thank God for the trucker that allowed me to rub his trailers bumper while he led me into the pull out spot. If it hadn't been for him I would have went off the side and died for sure.

    I got caught in 2 blizzards in Wyoming in 2006 first one during a haul from Omaha,Ne, to Salt Lake City, Utah. The blizzard forced me to stop around Elk mountain, Wyoming, for it was too dangerous to continue. The end blizzard, during a run from Idaho to North Carolina, stopped me at Cyeyenne, Wyoming. interstates were closed and truck stops were full. Bright spot was my training. That kept me alive. And the winter views I enjoyed very much.

    I will not run in that crap now days, use to be "back in the day" I enjoyed running in adverse weather, across Wyoming, up 25 to Billings. Too many I want to be first drivers now. After 40 years of driving not in a hurry anymore. Maybe after a while you can move up to a nicer truck, like a 379 or W-9.

    It's Platte like hat, cat, bat.

  • @stevel379
    @stevel379 6 лет назад +1

    North Platte is pronounced like hat.
    Very smart move staying where you were ahead of the storm. By the time the snow starts falling, the truck stops fill up fast and you're hard pressed to find a safe spot to park. I have auto-chains and an APU. Best two investments I've ever made. No laying out in the slush to put chains on, and the APU saves a lot of fuel instead of idling, and it keeps the fuel warm too so no gelling.
    You don't want to be heading out across Nebraska and Wyoming on the 80 without a heavy load when there is any kind of weather. Those winds kick up to over 70 MPH fast and they blow over light trucks very frequently. In one morning early in 2017, I counted 35 overturned trucks between Utah state line and Cheyenne. It's nothing to mess around with.
    Drive safe out there.

      If he is an owner operator and pretty much uses the same trailer all the time, they are one heck of a time saver if he drives a lot in the snow. They're expensive, like $15,000 installed, but instead of losing an hour installing and a half hour taking them off, you don't even have to stop, just slow down and push a button.
