How SILVER Became the Best (And WORST) Rival | Pokémon Heart Gold / Soul Silver

- Pokémon has introduced several rival figures throughout the franchise's length. Some are exceptional, while others are considerably average. In Gold and Silver, and later on their remakes of HeartGold and Soulsilver, we are introduced to Silver, the reckless redheaded menace of Johto. Unfortunately, he is rather disappointing for a rival.
But it is in the unfolding narrative of Team Rocket's return and Silver's rival relationship with our player character that reveals a different side to the upstart bully: one that shows what distinguishes the average Pokémon trainer from the Champions that sit at the top of the leagues. And it all starts with YOU: The same player character that acts as a rival to the persistent and shortsighted Silver.

bro made me empathize with a 2d character....i just wanted to play in peace man now im gonna be crying every heartgold run 😭
@by.turquoiseblue I'll keep it real: as you can probably tell, I didn't like Silver. Not to make it melodramatic, but I had always questioned why so many people liked him as a character. Playing Soulsilver recently with a more open mindset, I saw what maybe they saw and then some. To me, this video is part rant, part learning. I still had my grievances, but I came appreciate the value of his character in the game.
I'm glad you feel the empathy. In hindsight, although it's very gratifying beating Silver in every fight (cough 30 levels above cough), that you beat him so badly that he starts reconsidering his life choices: I can't say it's the be all, end all of narrative design, but it certainly helps the dynamic feel alive, if you may. Good luck with Red on Mt. Silver, mate 🙏
@@expychristian its actually true how he doesn't make much of an impact in the players life in HGSS but then again the level system was notoriously wack so idk 😐 the avg rival experience is that they fight you but also very close to you....but even though it doesn't feel that way with edge mclord silver the best of friends are ride or die, that includes when they are going through dark and tough times. Its so true how just by being there with the guy and helping him vent and open up we're silently able to help him heal and go down a happier path...I can 100% relate, very 10/10 video essay 😌🤝👍✨
@by.turquoiseblue Amen to that! True friends stick together through thick and thin. At times, it just takes being there for someone else for them to get back on their feet, regardless of pace and speed. I'm happy you found this meaningful! Thank you again for your comment and support!
Side note: Yeah, Gen 4 leveling was kind of whack.
@@expychristian RAHHH I THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENT TOO! I THANK YOUR THANKFULLNESS AAAA
@@by.turquoiseblue NO THANK YOU RAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAAH
Based Hugh enjoyer
@maverick5169 The Unova rivals in general felt like legitimate characters, not just "hey let's do this and that." Close second would be May in ORAS when it comes to actual character development (Silver too, but I just like the others more)
the music is louder than your voice, love the video but next time check that
@@samixedits5996 Was it??? I felt it was very muted. For summary and perspective: my audio was a +2, while the music was a -30.
Hmm. I'll keep that in mind! Thank you for the heads up and the comment!
@@expychristian ill agree you were pretty silence
@@wolfi4458 Good to know! I'll bump up my voice overs from here on out. Thanks for the input y'all!
I think what makes Pokémon rivals interesting is the various ways they have been written and executed, from personality type, motives, and their relationship with the player.
I feel like when people use blue as the poster child for how rivals should be they ignore the aforementioned nuances when in reality there’s no one specific way to write rival. They’re all valid and like you said it’s all a matter of subjectivity.
@T_kats Agreed. Rivals should be interesting enough for you to find some kind of meaningful connection to them without it being something super trivial. Blue has nostalgia factor, but asides from that, he isn't actually a "well-written" rival. He IS a good trainer, though. That's why I like Hugh a lot. Good development, good trainer, has a relatively dynamic relationship with the player character.
But as you said, right: these are active characters with many traits. Not defined formula here. It's up to the player, to an extent, to find that connection to their rival.
Great video dude!! just found this channel today and you have a new sub.
@Mintysaur Appreciate it! Thank you for the sub and the support. Thankful to see the video make it's rounds. BTW nice pfp 👌
How do you overlevel in HGSS??? I am usually underleved in HGSS
@@TheElectricSheep I overlevel period. I go to Mt. Silver (and other relatively high leveled areas in other regions) and just grind it out. I also had a Pokemon team that had a relatively decent growth rate, except for maybe Heracross. I always try to be as powerful as possible before fighting the next gym leader, champion, etc
awesome breakdown. subbed!
@jehaneko Appreciate the subscription! Got more on the way. What did you like from the video? I do like getting feedback so I can improve however I can.

@@yaasinm It's actually a RUclips series called "Pokémon Generations!" It covers, I believe, Gen 1 to 6 in simple terms.
@@expychristian thanks mate and great video
